Probably, but it will be a fun match to watch nonetheless. I'm watching the play by play updates at my office comp, wish I saw that opener between SA and Mexico! :rock

Saturday, June 12: This is the big one: USA vs. England at 2:30PM ET (on ABC rather than ESPN) (http://www.tvsquad.com/2010/06/11/the-week-in-sports-tv-june-11-17/)
Go USA! :rock

England has the much better team to be sure, but I'm hoping for the usual England meltdown though, maybe Rooney getting sent off for foul language, or keeper David Calamity James will have one of his fits of madness when he thinks he's a midfielder and leaves the goal.
But should be a hell of a match at the very least.

james had a brilliant season, yes he is prone to the odd blunder but he has been a legend for pompey!!
Like I said in the MA, the USA can't really lose this match. If we thrash you guys you'll say you don't care and if it is a good result you will be bigging it up like it was the best thing ever.
FOOTBALL IS the worlds largest sport and the biggest world competition. For a country with such a massive population you would have thought you could have come up with a decent 25 man squad. USA have improved a great deal in the last decade and it is only a matter of time before you guys start taking the game more seriously.
I will let you all vulch me in buffs if USA win :O

S' true, England under a lot more pressure than the US. It'd be huge if the US could scrape a point out of this game but no-one's going to be surprised if they lose. England on the other hand would be roasted at home if they don't win.
And yeah, sadly David James hasn't really been the same "Calamity" Janes since his West Ham days, he's much less erratic now.
But this is probably the best team England's ever sent to a World Cup, and by all accounts Capello is doing an excellent job of managing them. Most likely the US loses, and has to then go out and beat Algeria as they're expected to, and then Slovenia, which is going to be a tough one.
-
I was goin' for Mexico this morning and they HIGHLY disappointed me.They should have raped Africa in the first half and they know it.
-
USA have got a really good chance of beating both algeria and slovenia to get through. ;)
Capello is a no nonsense task master and it is exactly what our overpaid lazy stars need. His evil looks scare me and I don't have to go into a changing room with him :D.
As for today's matches I think south africa deserved a draw in what was a bit of a scrappy game. Mexico would feel they should have done better.
I was impressed with uruguay's work rate just now snapping at the heels of the French and never really let them sit on the ball. France won't be happy dropping those points.
-
Ditto here Bruv ill let u know time n date for vulch if USA loses. pretty sad about mandelas grandaughter. what a way to startoff worldcup. i remember mexico used to b a powerhouse not nemore seems like. Yes the USA is wakin alittle to football according to most of the world. Boy i cant wait, wife says im tarded for liking "footbal" soccer LOL.
-
I've got to say, from what I saw on the Fifa site today I can't wait to get home and watch the highlights from the first two games. The play by play for each seems pretty exciting, particularly the first match. I was actually pretty happy with both results.
Regarding US sentiments toward soccer, to be frank I don't think these boards or the player base for this game accurately depict the fan base in the country in terms of percentages. I fully understand and believe some people who don't know any soccer fans, as large swaths of the country still don't follow it. However, the fan base is quickly growing, particularly around major cities. I can tell you a good chunk of Washington is a buzz right now, and not just because of Strasburg. (Though that is a whole different issue, about which I'm also excited. :aok)

I love playing soccer. It keeps you in shape since you rarely stop running (unless you're a goalie). Watching it, not so much.

James was solid at the Hammers. It was at Villa and Liverpool where he was at his Groblatic peak.
And as I'm watching the game in a room full of Yanks, England better win.

England looked like it can go places
soft goal

I loved the game. I am glad that USA was able to come away with a tie instead of the loss most people expected. USA had a few chances to actually take the lead.
Now, if only the USA players could at least lip sync the words correctly to our National Anthem. :furious
<S> Brits, thanks for the great game.
-
Balanced match in my opinion, even though England did seem dominant in some areas, the US team did a very good job in containing the english strikers after the first goal. Altidore's chance off the post, if it had gone in, would have been the defining moment for all of group C.
-
what has surprised me so far this WC is the piss poor free kicks. You all wonder why Beckham was so special he could hit the target 3 out of 5 and turn matches with his quality delivery.
Things I would have done differently. James in goal, crouch on for heskey, he could have headed in at least one of the 20 odd crosses that went begging. After watching it though I still don't think we have what it takes to win the dam thing.
-
I"ve played soccer most of my life and I watch the MLS regulary (Red Bull fan) and I always love the tenseness of a close game. Anyone can take it for themselves. I was really impressed the most by howard though, he made 2 spectacular saves.
-
Saw the game and was goin for US. Man to be honest i kinda expected England to give a good spanking but i just gotta say one name..... GREEN. If England lost he never would have let it down...btw did he cry?

:lol
A draw against England for USA is just as good as a win in my book. Bruv, don't be such a welsh! :D
-
Thank God for Timmy Howard. Anybody else in goal and US loses. Tough breaks for England, but they played well enough to win and shouldn't have much trouble with Algeria and Slovenia. Crouch in there for Heskey as Bruv said though, and I don't think there's much doubt we'll be seeing David James in goal next time.
Great result for the US, should settle them down a bit. Altidore played well, did the hard work of a target forward holding the ball up to allow the midfielders up into the attack and a nice turn also on Carragher. Findley not so much. Didn't seem comfortable. Edson Buddle should be starting instead, having a great season in MLS. And I'd prefer Torres in the midfield over Clark, although most likely Clark will stay in there because of his defense. Overall, looking good going into the next two matches.
-
I thought Heskey had a good game - he won everything in the air against the US centre backs, held the ball well and layed on Gerrard for the goal... having said that he should have scored, Shaun Wright Philips should also have had one. Green redeemed himself with the save. Fair result.
We drew with Uruguay in the first game in '66 so it should be a breeze now :lol
-
BTW Carragher and Terry together is a big no no against anyone that isn't a monopod
-
I'm thinking the United states brought over some water from the gulf of Mexico and coated Robert Green's gloves in it!!
-
No mate, as Alan Hansen would say 'Basic schoolboy error' Get yer body behind the ball!!!
-
boy did USA luckout WOOOT!!
-
BTW Carragher and Terry together is a big no no against anyone that isn't a monopod
god they are so immobile this is where rio being crocked will let us down. No pacy centre backs unless they go with dawson
and what is the point of ledley king if he has to come off at half time :noid
-
Incredibly disappointed with Englands performance. Game seemed like it was being played in slow motion, it was so slow
-
If England do manage to qualify, I can't see them going past either the final 16 or the quarters.
Jamie Carragher (I'm a Liverpool fan) if far too slow, ditto for John Terry, a team with a fast paced attack will demolish them.
Was 'all our hopes' Rooney even playing?
Heskey, holds the ball up well, but also too slow.
Crouch, (for a tall bloke) heading ability is dire.
Gerrard and Lampard still can't play together effectively, consistantly.
Robert Green, one howler and a couple of important stops. (possibly his only game?)
As an A.B.E. (Anyone But England), I was overjoyed with the result.
Roll on England / Algeria - won't be as easy as the biased 'British' media are expecting. Added incentive for me, got Algeria in my works sweepstakes :-)
Well done U.S.A. !
-
Movement off the ball is key, watch Argentina, Brazil and Spain - its different gravy, always moving and looking for the ball. We don't get in behind and between the midfield and defence of other teams any where near enough.
-
Ahh Kev, you sweaties are so bitter :lol. Remember Ali Macleod? We all had a good laugh when you lot imploded!!

Ah Andy Murray, the British tennis player, as opposed to Tim Henman the English tennis player.
If Murray was English, he wouldn't be referred to as British.
I always remember the opening game of 1998 World Cup was Brazil / Scotland (we lost 1-2).
England played four days later and the memorable comment from Des Lyneham - "The tournament started four days ago, but this is where it really begins."
Of course Jimmy Hill was infamous for his snide comments.
Is it any wonder that there is A.B.E.?
-
LOL Kev - had no idea you were one of the chosen.
On the plus side, 1978 gave us the greatest goal in Word Cup history as Archie Gemmel dribbled through the entire Dutch team. Sadly, too little too late.
In 1998, I was in London for the opener and ended up in a bit of a ruck when my pint ended up all over some poor girl when Collins scored. Was in Cancun by the time Beckham imploded against Argentina. What a night we had with the Argentine fans.
Glad to see England are as poor as I suspected.

OK - I have a general question: Who here struggles with the difference between 'English' and 'British'? The team playing today was 'England'. Not 'Britain'. I am British. I am not English. Many of us Brits who are not English are actually quite pleased with today's turn of events.

Pathetic, isn't it? Some English obviously have a major chip on their shoulder regarding our neighbours.

Why doesn't Britain compete together in the World Cup?

So they are different countries?
How are they united?
Since I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in British history, I'll consult Wikipedia...
'The United Kingdom was created out of the existing historic kingdoms of England (including Wales), Ireland and Scotland. Between the 17th and 19th centuries a series of political events brought these constituent elements into a close political union. England, Ireland and Scotland were brought into a personal union by the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when James VI, King of Scots inherited the Kingdoms of England and Ireland and moved his court from Edinburgh to London, although all three kingdoms retained their separate political institutions.
On 1 May 1707, the Kingdom of Great Britain was created by the political union of the Kingdom of England (which included Wales) and the Kingdom of Scotland. This event was the result of the Treaty of Union that was agreed on 22 July 1706, and then ratified by both the Parliament of England and Parliament of Scotland each passing an Act of Union in 1707.
Almost a century later, the Kingdom of Ireland, merged with the Kingdom of Great Britain to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland with the passing of the Act of Union 1800. Disputes within Ireland over the terms of Irish Home Rule led eventually to the partition of the island in 1921, with Dominion status for the Irish Free State in 1922 and Northern Ireland remaining part of the UK. As a result, in 1927, the formal title of the UK was changed to its current form, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.'

Each country is allocated places in European competions seperately. The conscern is a British football team would give UEFA an excuse to cut the places as they could consider the 4 seperate leagues as one.
Approx population figures as of mid 2008
Wales - 2.99m
Scotland - 5.17m
England - 51.44m
More people you have, the greater choice you have.
Brazil arguably the World Cups most successful team, population 192m.

I'm sure you'll find people in parts of the world that soccer is popular in that find it boring, just like you'll find people in America that find baseball boring, but the point I was trying to make is that the reason it's not popular here is because most people here look at it as a boring sport, I think because of it's low scoring, also the fact that you might sit through an entire game to only have it end with a tie..

To be honest Trax, I get what you're saying. I think the problem in the US is that most people don't have an emotianal atachment to a soccer team - be it at club or international level - the way they do with a football, basketball, hockey or baseball team. To be truely in to a sport, I think you need that. For me, I can appreciate the skill on display in North American sports, but I'm just not that bothered who wins to get excited.

some of the best football matches I have ever watched have ended up 0-0,
The beauty of the game is the tension. tactics, teamwork. This year my team who got relegated from the premier league and went into bankruptcy. Our team cost about 2 million overall with Chelsea at over 200 million. In the FA Cup final (the worlds longest running cup competition) Chelsea ran out 2-1 winners and we like the USA had several chances to win.
The beauty of the game is that anything is possible!
-
i must admit, US fought very well against the Brits! good job, they where so close to even win it! :aok
It was a hard job, pweeh.
And folks please if you are not interested into Soccer, leave this thread clean, this here is about Soccer,

That could change with time, we do have the MLS(Major League Soccer) now, it's probably only about 7-8 years old now, most major cities have a team, like here in Chicago we have the Chicago Fire, I think it's televised, but I'm not sure, I've never seen a game and I don't think I know anyone who watches it either, I think there main audience is mainly Mexicans and people from Central & South America, but with having an actually soccer league I can see it growing in popularity.
some of the best football matches I have ever watched have ended up 0-0,
I'd be upset if I saw a game where at the end there was no winner, I mean it does happen every now & then in Hockey, but thats only after a 5min OT and then a shoot out, and it can happen in Football but thats extremely rare. Have they ever thought about having some kind of shoot out at the end if there was a tie?
-

same :aok
I'd be upset if I saw a game where at the end there was no winner ... Have they ever thought about having some kind of shoot out at the end if there was a tie?
if its a game which needs a result (ie. knockout competition) theres sometimes a rematch. If its still a draw then 15mins each way extra time. if its "golden goal" the first team to score in extra time wins, othewise if its still a draw its the dreaded first to 5 penalty shootout :uhoh
for league games (the bulk of football played) the team's performance over the whole season is what counts.
-
And btw. today is Germany against Australia !!! :D
lets find out if the Germans can see off some colonials ;)
Trax, in the latter stages of the tournament we will be having extra time 15mins x 2 and then penalty shoot outs. If it is excitement your after penalties deciding every match is :x. Correct me if i'm wrong holmes but I think they did away with the golden goal rule.

So I have a question, do they do the World Cup every year, or is this like the Olympics with it only happening every few years?

once every 4 years, over the last 20 years or so Brazil, Germany, Italy and France have been the most dominant forces.
We have the european championships in between, the rest of the world have other more localised competitions.

Although, I do not think France have as strong as a team as they have had in the past, my eyes are on Spain this world cup.

France were poor in their first game I don't rate their manager much.
Spain for sure they had a perfect Euro win and played some great football. I think Brazil vs Spain will be one match for our American friends to get into!

Heard a good joke in regards to Baseball being boring, "God forbid you actually see a no hitter, your basically watching 9 innings of 2 guys playing catch".
Just remembered it & thought it was hilarious, so I thought I'd share.

Selection of not very funny jokes about our goaly:
* Before he got into football, Robert Green was a bus driver. But he got fired because he couldn't make any stops.
* Why is Robert Green like ITV HD? They both switch off at the crucial moment. (ITV went to an advert and missed the England goal)
* Yesterday at London Zoo one of the staff let a a Central American monkey slip out of his grasp. So Robert Green's not the only English keeper to drop a Howler.
* What does Robert Green do after winning the World Cup? Drops his controller.
* Robert Green has just been refused a Savings Account in his Local Bank
* At least that's one British spillage the Americans won't be moaning about...
* All these Rob Green jokes are getting out of hand...In fact they're crossing the line
* Kermit was right: It's not easy being Green.
* The England lads had a get-together after the game and bought Robert Green a drink to commiserate. He spilled it.
* Steven Gerrard said: "The whole team is behind Rob Green." With hindsight, that's a good place to stand.
* My computer's got the Robert Green virus. It can't save anything.

those horns that are incessantly being blow are are tad annoying

Selection of not very funny jokes about our goaly:
Those are rough, but entertaining. :lol
As a keeper for many years (I'm all bruised up from a game yesterday) I couldn't help but feel bad for the guy, despite how happy I was that he let it go. Obviously I've never played on that level, but even in a friendly game there is NO worse feeling than letting an easy shot pass. Props to Tim Howard for a fantastic game, though. :rock

YAWN
more kids running around tooting on horns and running away from contact sports.
-
So apart form foozball and hockey, what contact sports do you have?
Have ya ever seen a game of shinty? :D
-
I think I found out how we cheated England! Looks like the "Force" will now have to be tested for, along with PED's.

Well that's a good one (always helps when you have a weapon), but I still think Australian rules football is the toughest contact sport.
But then again, I doubt that many in the US have the livers to sit through a cricket test match.

All I see is a US team that is bar none the laziest team I've ever recalled seeing. No hustle at all.

I can only listen at work, but this sounds absolutely pathetic. :(

Slovenia 2, USA 0 at the half

I won't watch the 2nd half. Slovenia are playing their tulips off. Altidore is beyond over rated and couldn't dribble a ball to save his own life. If a US player is near the ball he's running away from it. The Coach sucks to top it all off. US Soccer is quite possibly the most over hyped thing I can think of. Go Brasil!!!!
Although, Findley got screwed with a Yellow Card for a "hand ball" and the ball blatantly hit his head/neck area. So he's benched in the next game.

I think you are off base with your lazy comment.
But opinions are like a**holes everyone has them.

Been a ton of bad calls going against the US so far.
-

That wasn't off sides. This ref sucks.
-
Come on offsides?
-
great comeback USA, cracking game as well
-
Come on offsides?
Yeah really. There were 2 guys I saw that were ahead of the US player. This guy really sucks.
-
We got robbed of the win.
-
I think it was called for a foul (but it was'nt a foul)
-
USA were ripped off - nothing wrong with that third "goal" at all - the only fouls I could see were from the slovenians - lots of cuddling going on.
Algeria will be an interesting game for you - especially if you play like you did in the 2nd half.

Yeah there wasn't a damn thing wrong with that. They said it should have been a goal or a penalty kick.
-
USA won that game.. Refs sucked SO bad.. :furious
-
That's two games in one day that the ref's entirely failed. That the best you have to offer, world cup organizers?
-
Ok did this game just end in another tie?
:lol
-
great working coming back from 2-0 down. ref seemed ok to me, ive seen much worse.

:huh
I watched the last 30 minutes and saw 4-5 horrible calls, luckily the Slovenians got some against them too. Surprisingly.
-
It is amazing what paying off a ref will do :furious
-
seems both the games so far today have had poor referees. Lets face it we did very well to get 7 days of football without any cock ups except for the Aussie penalty and sending off.
It was bound to happen eventually. WTG USA on the comeback, shows some guts to not give in!
Hopefully England can get 3 points tonight and we will sleep much better this evening. Check out the ALgerian hairdo's they deserve to get pounded!
-
Lets go to the game n shave their heads LOL. dam USA let it get away from them too, darn refs need trifocals
-

I wonder where all the chants of "REPLAY! WE NEED REPLAY!" are. Oh yeah, they're all too busy trying to batter Bud Selig's door down.
-
I got the feeling the ref wasn't totally committed to the foul call that led to the free kick in the first place, so he was looking for a reason to erase any goal from the free kick.
But that's football, as they say. Or soccer in this case.
Horrible first half from the US though, Slovenia deserved a result today.
-
well I am rooting for Algeria :O

Can't say I wouldn't love a better position in our pool :salute

Looks like Algeria has showed up to win it. England is looking stunned.
-
I don't think so, capello just needs to re-assess his attacking options.
they haven't really had any notable chances. I think the ref is pretty bad but we just need to punish Algeria's sloppy defending.
If we get an early second half goal we will relax at little and get some more otherwise a 1-0 win from a suicidal piece of Algerian defending will be acceptable ;)
