I Am The Flag
By Ruth Apperson Rous
I am the flag of the United States of America.
I was born on June 14, 1777, in Philadelphia.
There the Continental Congress adopted my stars and stripes as the national flag.
My thirteen stripes alternating red and white, with a union of thirteen white stars in a field of blue, represented a new constellation, a new nation dedicated to the personal and religious liberty of mankind.
Today fifty stars signal from my union, one for each of the fifty sovereign states in the greatest constitutional republic the world has ever known.
My colors symbolize the patriotic ideals and spiritual qualities of the citizens of my country.
My red stripes proclaim the fearless courage and integrity of American men and boys and the self-sacrifice and devotion of American mothers and daughters.
My white stripes stand for liberty and equality for all.
My blue is the blue of heaven, loyalty, and faith.
I represent these eternal principles: liberty, justice, and humanity.
I embody American freedom: freedom of speech, religion, assembly, the press, and the sanctity of the home.
I typify that indomitable spirit of determination brought to my land by Christopher Columbus and by all my forefathers - the Pilgrims, Puritans, settlers at James town and Plymouth.
I am as old as my nation.
I am a living symbol of my nation's law: the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
I voice Abraham Lincoln's philosophy: "A government of the people, by the people, for the people."
I stand guard over my nation's schools, the seedbed of good citizenship and true patriotism.
I am displayed in every schoolroom throughout my nation; every schoolyard has a flag pole for my display.
Daily thousands upon thousands of boys and girls pledge their allegiance to me and my country.
I have my own law—Public Law 829, "The Flag Code" - which definitely states my correct use and display for all occasions and situations.
I have my special day, Flag Day. June 14 is set aside to honor my birth.
Americans, I am the sacred emblem of your country. I symbolize your birthright, your heritage of liberty purchased with blood and sorrow.
I am your title deed of freedom, which is yours to enjoy and hold in trust for posterity.
If you fail to keep this sacred trust inviolate, if I am nullified and destroyed, you and your children will become slaves to dictators and despots.
Eternal vigilance is your price of freedom.
As you see me silhouetted against the peaceful skies of my country, remind yourself that I am the flag of your country, that I stand for what you are - no more, no less.
Guard me well, lest your freedom perish from the earth.
Dedicate your lives to those principles for which I stand: "One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
I was created in freedom. I made my first appearance in a battle for human liberty.
God grant that I may spend eternity in my "land of the free and the home of the brave" and that I shall ever be known as "Old Glory," the flag of the United States of America.
Nuff said...

First Penquin dont like or believe in God and now he disrespects my flag?! :furious Oh how I would love to meet you in person. Never in my time on these boards have I ever wanted to put anyone on a ignore list until this morning. I have no use for you,and do not like you sonny boy. If it were up to me I'd ban your arse from this board for life. You discust me. You insult me and all that have served, and or, died defending the American flag.
I've give a weeks pay just to get my hands around your little pencil neck right now. You have now crossed a line I will not stand for. Stay tuned son, this has just begun. :furious

You need to be run out of here on a rail. I'll be damned iof I'll sit back and let you bad mouth God and Country and not have my say in the matter! I try my best to abide by the rules set forth on these boards and I'm having a really hard time following a few right now. But I have to respond to this.
Penquin, you tree hugging POS, people have died and been damaged for life defending the right for you too say what you do. And that fact that you have no respect for that pisses me off to no end. HOW DARE YOU come in here and say it's just a piece of cloth! You are a diease that should be stomped out like the filthy rat you are. People at this very moment are dieing for your rights to live a free life in peace and yet you could care less.
Well let me tell you something sonny boy, I will be in your face and everyone like you until my dieing breath. I am sick and tired of folks like you in this country. If you don't like America..Take your arse elsewhere! Because you're not welcome in my town, county, state, video game or country. Go live and hangout where no one gives a watermelon about freedom, God, loyality and respect you dirtbag.
This could very likely be my last post on these boards if I get banned for speaking my mind on this. But if Penquin and types like him are allowed to go unchecked on these boards, then I don't want any part of this place anyhow. I will not stand silent watching someone disrepect my God and country while I have or had friends and family die for these things.

The flag, is much more than a piece of fabric.
The 13 stripes represent the thirteen original colonies. The stars represent the 50 states in the Union.
Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and Blue represents Vigilance and Justice.
The flag is much more than a piece of fabric. Any flag to a person of that country, should be more than a piece of fabric. Should be more than just a sign showing what country you originate from or who your allegiance is with. It should be a symbol of what your country is, and should be a source of pride, no matter what country you are from, your flag is your identity.

Hmmm i always thought of Penguin as a well educated Kid and well spoken, until now..... you have no clue as to what our flag means to so so many , you know those guys who died to keep our colors waving in the wind and our freedoms intact, you sir dug yourself a hole that i doubt you will ever crawl out of, they may be just colors to you BUT this counrty bleeds RED WHITE and BLUE and is the soul of what we were founded on, get some respect sonny then come back.

I had hoped this might just be a solemn and respectful topic. To those that understand and know history and value liberty, a piece of cloth for sure, but it is so much more a symbol. As those that once pledged their lives and sacred honor for a cause were remembered and known, for there has never been such a nation on earth that promised such freedom.

Don't get bent out of shape you guys. It's not worth letting them work your blood pressure up. I try to make it a policy not to react to people if I don't value their opinion (unless there's truly no other alternative).

Yes, the subject of our flag does rile me up. And I'll tell you why, for Motherland brings up a good piont about my avatar.
Over the years I have seen folks put down the Confederate flag, hang labels and stigmas on it, and generally make it out to be a bad thing. My ancestors died for that flag just has they have for the stars and bars we have now. I wouldn't be surprized if one day they completely outlaw it. Most folks already will tell you they find it offensive.
I see the same thing happening to my American flag these days too. One has to look no further then Arizona to see it. Did anyone catch the video where the Army vet noticed a Mexican flag hanging above the American flag outside a bar in Arizona. Or the Mexican kids waving their flag and stomping on our flag outside of a school in Arizona?
Americans have a bad habit of letting things slide to the point that one day it'll all be taken from us. Then everyone will wonder wtf happened. People, if you truely believe our nation is the best in the world....you have to fight for it to keep it that way. Not let others come in and take the things from us that make us who we are.

Patriotism is a devotion to one's own country, with which comes a concern for it's defense.
Absolutely. Patriotism is passive and defensive; nationalism is active and aggressive. Good old Eric Blair.

Indoctrination at its finest here folks... sad.
Naive as it may be, I'm not sure how you can call it indoctrination.

When you take the oath to "protect and defend" when you enlist, you don't get to pick and
choose whom you are going to protect. One of the things that does get me steamed is the way
some folks spit all over the things you are putting your life at risk to defend. Yet even while they
demean the sacrifice, they enjoy the benefits without a single twinge of regret.

I agree. Our vigilance has slipped over the years-especially since WW2. We are increasingly catering to what other countries expect us to be. Envision this on a smaller scale; Your own home. Do you bow down to everything your next-door neighbor wants you to do all the time (within reason, of course)? I sure as hell don't!

Ok, some just will not take the hint. I am not closing this thread, but if you find you cannot make a post in keeping with the intent of the thread, then you will find yourself suspended from the forum.
Why is it you guys cannot keep from responding to trolls? Do you really enjoy being manipulated that much? Get a kick out of empowering others?
You know why we have trolls? Because too many of you cannot keep your fat fingers off the keyboard and are so easy to control and manipulate!
There is nothing more irritating to me than to see a good thread go to crap because people simply cannot stop themselves from posting and/or responding with garbage. All you have to do is ask one question, "How is my post going to make a positive contribution to this thread topic?"

Atleast in America, they allow you to hang your flag from windows, have a flag pole errected in your garden etc. If you do that in the UK people get offended, claim racism etc.. I find it so disapointing that someone who immagrates to the UK, then gets offended when people hang flags outside the window etc or someone bans them as they could cause offence.
