im hearing all these little rumors every now and then saying that you (hitech) are going to put submarines in the game. personally i think it would be a great addition to the game, but im thinking there might have to be bigger maps, or possibly just a whole other arena (like the da). i am for sure going to say that there will be alot of complaints and disagreements with this topic and with the idea of submarines. well if you are going to put submarines in id like to know what kind and the details and descriptions on the submarines. for everyone who is reading this (just for fun) what submarines would you like to see in the game if we are getting them?
thanks 67COUGAR <S> all

Ive got GWX mod'd Silent Hunter 4. Thats all I need. But if HTC wants to add submarines then I'd be more than happy to sortie one out for S&Gs.
-
I think Hitech has said in the past he would like to add subs. I can't remember but I think he said his father was in them?
-
If they added subs, HT would have to put Depth Charges to.

Clearly, you'd need the venerable TypeVII, though Gato and Type XXI would be the late war monsters.
This'd clear up, I'd add, some of the other rumors about some of the players. We'd finally find out who really goes down just to get a kill.
-
if you add subs, your going to have to add Destroyer that can roam free with player control to hunt the subs
-
Not to mention PBY's to hunt subs as well....or pick up a ditched pilot and get mega points for returning them safely...
-

That' and the destroyer make damn good extensions.
We'd also need local carrier-based subkillers to deefend the CV groups.
And what about detection? Clearly, there'd be potential for visual detection when the sub is surfaced or shallow but what about sonar?

My grandfather served on various subs during and after the war too. His biggest break was that one of his cousins or uncles (has my family's last name "Romanek" and played on the Army's football team pre-WWII) was a good friend with a Navy officer (I believe a lieutenant) in the navy stationed at the major east coast sub yard. This luck on top of my grandfather being fluent in German (my great grandfather was a German who immigrated to Warsaw after WWI and then to America well before WWII) and one of the best welders at the time they saw enter the navy during the draft got him stationed after training for special assignment to his brother's friend's base to be on the welding crews that were involved in the dismantling of some captured U-Boats. After that was done he was put on a welding crew at the base to repair and retrofit subs coming in on the East coast. After the war he immediately got another special assignment and was assigned to repair and make seaworthy an older post-WWI era diesel sub. Once ready for the trip through panama to Pearl he was to sail with it and the crew and await further orders. It was a harrowing trip they made in convoy with another patched up mothball sub. Their conning tower had some major leaks, the largest being around the seal of a porthole in the conning tower (unweldable so he couldn't fix it as he would explain). As they cleared the Florida panhandle on their way to Panama they hit a hurricane and got picked up outta the water and spun around pretty bad since they couldn't submerge to safety due to the leaking conning tower. They lost all their engines but my grandfather was eventually able to help get one of the four engines working. They made contact with the second sub then and got a tow the rest of the way to Panama from her. Battered and bruised they made it eventually to Panama, got the parts they needed and fixed all the leaks in the conning tower. They had fair weather for the rest of their trip to Pearl. Upon arriving at pearl he learned his special orders were to prepare the sub for the Crossroads nuclear tests performed shortly after the war in the pacific. Due to delays and postponements he ended up sitting around Hawaii with not much to do but enjoy the sights for the remainder of his service time before he was shipped back home.
My grandfather was a welder before WWII (due to his profession at the time he was the last of three brothers to join the Navy in the draft because he couldn't enlist due to his employer already buying him outta the draft... threatened to quit if his boss bought him out the next time, so when his time finally ran up he came home to a draft card). He was the third from the front in the Navy line at the draft when a Marine Sargent informed the first ten they would be marines due to a shortage of draftees volunteering for the marines that day. As my grandfather got his turn in the line he approached the navy clerk sitting at the front behind a desk, processing each man's paperwork as their turn in line came up, stamping the first men's paperwork when done and placing it into the "Marines" bin on the corner of his desk. He went down the lines, asking rhetoric questions to my grandfather. The last line before the bottom of the last page, where the stamp would go, listed a draftee's last or current occupation. As the clerk stamped the page and was already halfway to dropping it into the bin marked "Marines" he paused and asked "you were a welder"? My grandpa proudly confirmed it and added that it was for 6 years at a home refrigerator plant now manufacturing tanks. The clerk replied "We really need some GOOD and EXPERIENCED welders in the Navy." and swiftly dropped it into the previously-empty "Navy" bin on the opposite corner of his desk without a single sound of disagreement from the Sargent. The was the first fortune he had as most of those marines ended up not coming home or being wounded during their various pacific tours.

I thought Gatos were in the war from the beginning, at least since 1941 when the US entered the war.
They were built from 40-44 but the first wasn't commissioned 'til '43.
You'll notice a couple of things now, and at my direction.
1. I said nothing about when they were built.
2. Gatos weren't in service early war - and that's a fact you could've easily checked prior to posting.
2. I made reference to their status late-war and made no reference to their presence early war.
That they were extremely competent subs and were in service late war is entirely correct. Also note, Gato was the most numerous class of US subs deployed in WWII.
I point this out not to give you a hard time but to save you one, for such slips will get you generally roasted around here, the clientele being fairly concerned with accuracy both in your data and your comprehension. Distinctions matter here. For me, it's a fairly easy jump, given that no one in my life/work/history is/was especially tolerant of "whatevah". For others, it's more of a challenge.

OR, we can make a whole new perk category; most likely named ship guns? We could use the points we get from manning guns to use on player controlled subs. Subs could be say... 500 perks? And last al but 24hrs? What do ya say?

I thought Gatos were in the war from the beginning, at least since 1941 when the US entered the war.
They were. We used basically the same sub throughout WWII, with improvements to hull strength and weaponry. There were actually three classes commonly used in the war, the GATO (1940), BALAO (3-42) and TENCH (2-44).
The pre-war TAMBOR, SARGO, SALMON, and PORPOISE classes were also commonly seen in the war, but not in anything like the same numbers as the GATOS and later boats.
USS Drum was the first of the GATOs to go to war, her first patrol beginning in April 1942. From Wikipedia:
Drum arrived at Pearl Harbor from the East Coast on 1 April 1942, and after a voyage to Midway Atoll, cleared Pearl Harbor on 14 April on her first war patrol. Cruising off the coast of Japan, she sank Mizuho on 2 May and afterwards endured a 16 hour depth charge attack consisting of 31 depth charges. Later that month she sank three cargo ships before returning to Pearl Harbor on 12 June to refit. Drum's second war patrol, which she made in the waters between Truk and Kavieng from 10 July-2 September, found her efforts frustrated by poor torpedo performance, but she damaged one freighter before returning to Midway to refit.
That should take care of any questions about the class being used "early war". Unless some clown decides that April 1942 isn't early enough.

I have t ostand corrected on the commission dates. Note that I cited '43 as the first commission date - that is what is listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gato_class_submarine
However, shubert is entirely correct about the drum being commissioned before '43 - and Drum was the 12th Gato so there's no arguing that it's like the first four of the Gato class which were actually originally intended to be Balao class boats (go figure - since the later Balao class came after, not before).
The source on the commission dates is cited in footnote 2 of the wiki entry. I'm not sure what that author was smoking or if he qualified the comment. However, the boat was extremely effective as the war went on, probably in large part because of the improvement in american torpedoes.
In any case, I don't think anyone will argue that the Type VII is as good as the Gato .
Consider, first, a little comparo - The type VII is only about two-thirds the length and half the tonnage (based on the most numerous Type VIIC) of the Gato. It also has only half the torpedo tubes. The Gato was faster - on the surface, it's 21 knots compares pretty favorably to the Type VII's speed of 17.7kts - submerged, 9 compared to 7, and the Type VII was rated for less depth. Range was also less, but still long enough to be awful, unless you didn't mind the filthy, cramped quarters of the Type VII. Also note, the Gato was claimed to have some 48 hours of underwater endurance. The U-Booters were gasping at half that.
Second, the 77 Gatos sank 1.7M tons of Japanese shipping. About a fourth (21) of the class were lost during the war. The Type Vii, of which closer to 700 were built, accounted for some share of the 14M tons of allied shipping sunk but was considered obsolete by end of war - of the 1000 u-boats, all types built, something like 800 were lost. You do the ratios.
Of course, I realize you can't consider the weapon in isolation. The Type VII had arguably better opposition. I just think the VII a bit small and underarmed to be considered a late-war viable u-boat. The Type XXI, otoh... is another story.
-
On another note, the drum still survives in battleship memorial park in Mobile, Alabama, along with the U.S.S. Alabama(BB-60). Very neat deal to walk through and look at and think what all thosegood men went through all those years ago :salute

People always mention Catalina when thinking ASW patrol - or any patrol, for that matter.
Don't forget the Sunderland "Flying Porcupine" or the Lockheed Hudson.
As for that latter, it'd make a great EW medium - and has credit for the first RAF kill of the war.

Maybe... However, you'll note the Title is misspelled. It's actually "The Enemy Blow" and of course, it's about an epic contest between a destroyer Captain and his unterseeboot counterpart.Ultimately, it devolves into a shouting match after the hapless destroyer Captain clumsily beaches his dd right on top of the smaller U-Boot. Tha't s when the dialog gets good:
KM Kapitan: klumsy oaf! vas der fick pasiert? You blow!
USN Captain: You blow! What's the pig idea putting this scow under my keel? And close that hatchway -the whole thing stinks like an open ayus.
KM Kapitan: You start blow now, right here <gesturing to schlong>!
USN Captain: You'd like that you twisted cross-punk-ayus-muthahfuhgiva!
