If it is possible have the icons at 9.0 just show up red or green but too small to read plane type. By 5.0 it should be large enough to partially make out, IE. if you fly alot you should be able to pick out the plane type at that distance vs. someone who doesn't fly as much. By 3.0 or so it should be normal size. This would simulate visually picking up the target and still give new players the ability to ID targets without totally losing the icons.
I am not a programmer so I won't comment on whether or not it would be easy (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

If icons are essential for newbies (and I think they are), why not restrict them to those who really need them. Say if your kill/death is below .5 or similar.

Nashwan,
But then I'd NEVER get to fly without icons (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Sounds cool Cit!
Another cool idea I've heard is to have the icons start invisibile and gradually darken (over 10-15 seconds) if you stay on one view long enough.
