Title: Need help testing some things - Version 3
Post by: Pyro on June 21, 2010, 02:54:18 PM
<edit>  We now have a version 3 available.  See the link below to download it.  The file thtdlg.res has not been updated.

We have a new test version that fixes a few sound issues that made the previous version hard to play online with.  It also uses your existing sound config file to set individual sound volumes although there is no mechanism to adjust the individual sounds in the test version.

We need some help testing some issues that we can't duplicate in house.  Anybody is welcome to run this test version and make sure everything works for them but we are particularly looking for people who've had problems in the earlier patch versions of 2.19.  Specifically, we're looking for people who had the following problems:

A-  Losing the mouse cursor at the windowed main screen when quitting.
B-  Getting stuck hold down keys or joystick buttons like an up view or a fire button.
C-  Any general sound issues in any of the previous versions shipping with the Miles system.

PLEASE ONLY REPORT THE FOLLOWING 2 THINGS IN THIS THREAD:

1-  IF YOU HAD ONE OF THE PROBLEMS LISTED ABOVE, TELL US IF IT IS NOW FIXED OR IF YOU STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM.  PLEASE BE SPECIFIC ABOUT WHICH PROBLEM YOU HAD.
2-  NEW PROBLEMS THAT DON'T EXIST IN THE CURRENT RELEASE.

EXAMPLE:  "I previously had the lost mouse cursor on exit problem but I don't have that problem in the test version."  Or, "I had the stuck key bug happening to me and I am still seeing it in the test version."

There is also a new sound configuration in the options menu that lets you map different classes of sounds to different devices.  I.E. you can have voice go to your headset and other sounds through your speakers.  This just needs some general testing to make sure it's working as intended on different systems and configurations.

You can run this test version online.  This will not replace your current Aces High installation so if you have a problem with it you can go back to running the regular release.

Instructions:

1-  Download BOTH of these files to your Aces High folder.  Note: you can skip the thtdlg.res file if you still have it in your directory from the first test.

http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/htsim8r3.exe
http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/thtdlg.res

2-  Run the file htsim8r3.exe from your Aces High folder.  Create a shortcut if you want but make sure you run this file out of your Aces High folder.  If you run it from somewhere else it won't work.

3-  Report bugs or if any of the above listed bugs you had before are now absent with this test version.  Please report back to us in this thread.

Thanks again.

Are these the same test files as before? Or are they a version 2 as well as the thread?

I never had problems with the original release.  thought it was awesome, but now i lose frames big time.  i got into the 40's, not all the time, but mostly when there was lots of smoke, and only a few fiters.  over cv it went down to the 49-52's, again only with a few fiters around.  which is weird because i seldom have fps lower than 55 and that is with everything on fire, puffy ack and about a zillion uppers from the cv.  i have everything on except shadows on both versions.

e8400 cpu oc to 3.6
9800gtx+vc
windows 7 64 bit
sb xfi extreme sc
g35 headset, pedals, ch stick, x52 throttle, trakir all on usb powered hub.

btw i coudnt figure out how to have game sound on speakers and voice on headset.  i tried different ways, but couldnt get it to work

semp

the sounds are way better using the miles system.  i can hear every distinct sound.  it is great.  only bad thing about it, it is loud.

Master volume now works

Vox reception initially gets fragmented
Example
"John ha.........s a long moustache

Eventually clears up

High speed passes sound a bit off. almost a bit too high pitched to be prop driven aircraft even at high speed. But not quite as bad as the problems I was having

Otherwise the game plays fine

Were you using joystick buttons or keyboard keys when you experienced the stuck condition?

Joystick buttons. They stuck using MSSWFFB2 and G940 .

frame rates down into the 30-35 when in furball.  never happened before. tryied again with different sounds, firefox on with youtube music video on: beach boys full  60 frames occasional going down to 55 on same furball/airfield.  without the miles system.

What are your sound options set to?
Title: Re: Need help testing some things - Version 2

Miles system returns to default settings . View keys do not get stuck anymore . If killed while firing , guns are still firing when I spawn in .
All sound settings are default . No sound pack being used

all sounds going to headset.  coudnt get just voice to work on headset and all other on speakers.  My frame rate takes a big hit using miles when there's a few airplanes, explosions... around.  which is weird because when it was released a couple of weeks ago, my frame rate was normal.  also past couple of days i tried using it, i keep getting disco'd after about 10 to 15 min of game playing.

Game sounds.

On second thought High speed passes while as I mentioned before arent as bad as they were with the problems I was having.
But they are nothing short of intolerably annoying. It is as if the engines are revving way too high and are too high pitched even for a high speed pass. At slower speeds they sound fine

the longer I listened to them the more annoying they seemed to me. I ended up switching back to the regular non test version which sounds fine at all speeds.

Hlbly, can you try a couple things for us and see if the problems persist?

First, go into you Aces High\Settings folder and delete the sndgrp.cfg file.  Then run the game again without touching your sound options and see if your frame rate is still diminished.  After that, go into the sound options menu and try some different settings in the Speaker Layout option and see if any of those have any effect.  Don't change any of the other sound options other than Speaker Layout when testing this piece.  Thanks.

What's your OS and sound card?  I've been testing for this and can't detect anything abnormal.  Is it blatantly obvious when you hear it?

Sorry bout dat.

OS is Windows XP Professional

Currently using a "Soundblaster Live" card with only the Drivers installed so the sound device is listed as "Creative EMU10K1 Audio Processor (WDM) "

I CAN pop in a PCI express "Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme audio" if you think it will help ORRR  if it will aid you in testing various cards. Just let me know.

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L.

Onboard sound and voice on the motherboard somehow completely porked in game regardless of the version running. A development which started occurring not after the first switch to the Miles system. But right after we switched back. Hasnt been the same since. Absolute cause if this is as of yet unresolved. But I am suspecting this was a problem on my end.

I have a thread on this adventure in Hardware software forum. LOL
http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,289960.0.html  (Ignore the DXdiag as its a bit dated)

But basically I've given up on the on board sound and have it currently disabled in the bios and all those drivers removed.

In game the "SB Live" card sounds fine..perfect in fact running the regular version.
In the Tests that we are currently discussing. Everything sounds fine until I am in high speed passes whereas the other aircraft sound as if the engines are revving way too high for even a high speed pass.

I can tomorrow bring another machine into this room so I may record what I hear on my end and email you the file if you think that will help.

Hi Folks.

I haven't had more than a couple of free hours per month for flying for the last several, and cannot state whether previous versions were problematic on my system, as I believe that I might have missed the earlier releases that included the Miles Sound System.

However the current test version (launching via htsim8r.exe) causes the missing mouse cursor issue upon exit. The standard game (launched via Aceshigh.exe) does not.  I'm sure you already know this, but what's actually happening is that Aces High is not exiting, and as long as it's still showing on the process list the mouse cursor is missing/invisible.  Pressing CTL-SHIFT-ESC and terminating htsim8r.exe from the process list returns the mouse cursor.   Let me know if I can assist you further.

I've attached the most important DXDiag and basic hardware information below.

Thanks,

Guy

Ghastly, I could not help but notice there does not appear to be a native sound card driver loaded causing the computer to use the basic Windows drivers supplied by Microsoft.

I had the mouse cursor stuck at windowed screen issue. In the test version the problem no longer exists.

Hmmm  - let me check.

The sound card came bundled with the motherboard, and the drivers for the sound were on the CD bundled with it - which was of course set up for an automated install (for XP and Vista) that I was more than fairly sure I didn't want to "let simply run" on Win 7 Pro.

So it's certainly within the realm of possibility (probability, even) that the drivers aren't set up right, even though it's seemed to work flawlessly.

I'll dig into it at some point this weekend, and report back.

Thanks guys.

I tried installing it to try it but it says

htsim8r.exe -System Error

The program cant start because mss32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Do i need to install the first one or what do I do??

Pyro frame rate loss is reduced. I am going to go try  ver. 3 . OK just tested version 3 . Gun button stuck is gone . I tried 3 times auggering then re upping immediately . No issue with guns firing when spawning .  :aok . I am going to go to MA and check frame rate

Version 3 is now available.  See the first post in this thread for details.  Note that the .exe file has been renamed.

Did you put the file into your Aces High folder before running it?  Is your Aces High installation up to date?

B>  No problems whatsoever with stuck keys/buttons, etc... however while the test version recognized my saitek rudder pedals, it shows no input at all from them.. nevermind ignore that... windows wasn't showing any input either... unplugging/replugging them back in fixed that issue... i don't know why they did that but I'm 99.9% confident that it has nothing to do with AH... forget about this for now

C>  Sound seems great.. VOX is a bit distorted but understandable (I'm assuming because it's with others who aren't using Miles) but they can hear me clearly.  I did notice that it's nearly impossible to hear VOX over airplane engine noise, etc... and I found the volume controls for effects, voice, music, etc... however the voice volume setting will not go higher than the effects setting, so it is not possible to turn plane sounds down and voice sounds up... but I won't nitpick about this too much due to it being a test version haha.  Other airplane sounds and positioning seem just fine so far.

I can also successfully select speakers for airplane/outside noises and headphones for voice and it seems to work great... but since I have a 'sealed' type of headphones I ended up reverting back to headphones only... for now...

In case you need it, I went ahead and put my dxdiag on a website (don't worry Skuzzy.. no flash or java... heck it barely has html).  Just CLICK HERE (http://www.lca.ympsa.com/aceshigh).

Version 1,2, and 3 have same symptoms. Vox has 1~1.5 second delay before sound is heard, and not clearly heard. Saitek X-52 throttle with software(6.6.6.9) to enable mouse functions on stick, the left mouse button does not work. Also no mouse buttons on main mouse(driver5.1.2600.0) function when mapped for plane or vehicle use.

Without the test version, I am fine. With it, I have trouble hearing people over Vox, because the effects slider does not affect the plane sounds when someone is speaking.

on master volume (left side) if you select head set bottom option then there's a bug where u can only select one box at a time by that I mean well look at the picture, left side u can only select one option unless you close then come back in.  btw frame rate seem to be ok now.  havent flown thru smoke which is what lowered mine before.  and I am using youtube songs,  firefox on, and all the goodies just to push the limit.

new update flew right on field with lots of smokes about 15 cons/friendlies planes and fr went into the 30's.  I noticed it was mostly when somebody was on vox.  have film if needed.  sound again is awesome, with only few problems in the first 30 seconds or so of flight when vox is not really clear.  then it is awesome, but fr goes way down.

Hi Pyro!

Tested the new version. Report:

- mouse lock: problem solved;
- changing arenas or leaving: solved;

Sound: all works fine for me; tested all sliders and all work fine (still don't know what the Music does...); Effects sounds are loud, had to tone down to 50%... Voice is ok, just have to keep it at 100%, otherwhise, I have a hard time listening; quality is good, voice of people I know sounds the same.

Windowing of the system works fine!

All fine for me, thank you for your work!

Issue 1: Exit Crash not fixed.

Both htsim8r.exe dated 6/25/2010 and htsim8r3.exe consistently crash upon clicking "Quit" in the tower from offline play to return to the game selection screen (1st clipboard, containing Online Arena's, Offline Practice, etc.) - except when I use the following procedure before exiting the offline arena:

select Options,Preferences,Game Sounds
change Either "Speakers" or  "Speaker Layout"

It doesn't matter WHAT I change, what I have it set to upon entry or what I have it set to upon exit, as long as I hear that momentary "break" in sound while it reconfigures the sound when I make one or more changes, I can exit the arena back to the Game Selection Screen without the crash.  If I make any change that doesn't cause that momentary break in the sound of the circling aircraft and ack, it will crash upon exit.

Entering and exiting an online arena is not similarly affected - I can enter and exit an online arena without the game crashing without performing the "cause a sound reinitialization" process described.

Tigger - you mention what sounds like it could be the same issue.  Were you working offline?

(Haven't had a chance to fly online, but no anomalies have been noted in the sounds while flying offline)

Issue 2: GUI change of country does not work (discovered while jumping in out of the DA testing issue 1) - selecting another radio button does not deselect the current radio button, nor is there any effect when pressing OK after clicking another radio button - except when you have clicked the radio button for Bishop while either Rook or Knight. When you do not change countries after clicking OK no "Country changed to" text is shown from the Host. Using the . command to change to either Knight or Rook works normally.

P.S.  Per Skuzzy's observation, I installed an updated sound card driver retrieved from the Asus site, and the pertinent section of my DXDiag now looks like this:

Issue 3:  What I hear on voice transmissions (both Range and when I've self selected on Radio 5) is not playing correctly.

The first roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of a second of the transmission will play, followed by a pause of nearly a second, then the remainder of the transmission will play in it's entirety.  From what I can tell, this is on every transmission I receive.

My own transmissions to other players was reported to be normal, without the same pause I was hearing.

Issue 4:?  I'm having a hard time hearing others, in large part because I'm having a tough time setting the voice high enough relative to game sounds to hear everyone over the game.  And The "Effects" slider on the Voice Options page does not seem to control the volume of the "beep", such that by the time I get the voice playback loud enough, the beep is loud enough to be painful.  (Nor do the sliders - other than Master Volume- on the general sound settings screen seem to affect it).

Is the Voice volume control slider on the general sound settings screen supposed to have some sort of effect at this time? (if so, it doesn't seem to.)

P.S. Just noticed the Wave In checkbox.  Didn't test that as a solution, perhaps tomorrow.

Issue reported by others as well:  Vox transmissions clipped, missing 3 to 4 seconds of vox transmission intermittently.  All others hear me fine.

:aok Thanks for the test version.  The sounds and options are awesome.  No other issues at all.

Hi Pyro!

Sorry, have one bug to report: the slider position does not save when you press "Apply". So, I must constantly move the sliders for Voice and Effects up because the voice levels where too low...

Just FYI.

Cheers and thank you all,

OK after 3 nights of testing. So far nothing major to report.

Vox reception is fine although a bit loud. Cant seem to turn it down without turning down internal engine sound.
Just a suggestion. Maybe put a separate volume control for Vox. As this may be a personal preference thing.
"voice" volume control seems to do nothing.

Aircraft on high speed passes are mostly better though still a bit high revving, but only on some planes. If that makes any sense.  La's and.... (damn, my mind just went blank on the two other planes)

Anyway. There were 3 specifically but nothing that while noticeable, wasn't intolerable. And at this point may be just being a bit nit picky on my part.

I had the problem with getting the mouse to move after quitting out of an arena before.

With this I get the white screen of death in the windowed screen after leaving an arena or offline.

I've just finished my initial test of version 3

only thing is i found that my frame rate dropped so low down 2 12 or 10 fps and caused my advanced graphics to disable by them self's.
now i've had this problem before and it appear's to iron it self out over time or it may be that i was also running Google Chrome in the background.

But i Shall let you know after a few more days of play.

P.S my graphics card is a wee bitty old lol

I was having an issue and I wasnt sure it was the game or my equipment!

It had to do with the "look up" view,I had a button set to it and with the hatswitch could use both to take advantage of all those views. However it seemed to be giving me a problem,it only worked if I went to default view, lookup then to where ever I was looking before that. So I couldnt be looking back left and go to up back left, without releasing hatswitch to get up view working, then I could look back up left.

I thought it was a problem with my buttons and tried programing another button but that made no difference.

I just tried the version 3 and this seems to have fixed the issue.

If you need any imformation on setup or computer just ask!

Auto Take Off is on but it won't work. I would show you but, I don't have Photo Bucket or Shop or whatever. And, the Mossie won't get in the air. Right as you put full throttle, it does a noes dive into the runway.

There's a couple options to "capture" a screenshot, either use the in-game screenshot function and then locate the image file in your Aces High folder OR the print scrn button on your keyboard which saves it to your clipboard.  To get it out of your clipboard and into an image file, open MS Paint (Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint) and then paste (ctrl + v).  Edit or crop it as desired then save it as a *.jpg (not a *.bmp, they're way too large in files size).  The last part is you then need to host your image on a server to share with the WWW.  A photobucket account is free and they won't swarm you with spam if you select the proper settings when creating an account, make a free account and then go through the steps to upload an image.  Once uploaded successfuly, copy the website adress for that individual photo as supplied by photobucket.  Lastly come back here and make a new post and share your picture by inserting the address you were provided.

Just a question on this soon new release, will the old trees be put back in to subsitute these new ones. There's no way to hide with the new ones and for some reason people are able to see through the trees when you can't.

Ok after a few tests with V3 I have a few things to report.

1.) When I'm trying to use the vox all communications are garbled and broken.

2.) I had 2 CTD within 20 mins of each other, the map was the Titanic Tuesday map.

3.) To see if this was just my system I went in under the regular game and it ran perfectly.

Will post my specs ASAP.

Pyro I may have stumbled on why my and possibly others views are getting stuck . I noticed it happens almost every time I use a down view . My views always get stuck when there is no command in profiler that matches what I am trying to do . OK !!! I think I figured it out for sure took a bit of doing but I got it to do it with the sidewinder as well . It always gets stuck when there is no entry for what I am doing in my view.kmp . It is easy to reproduce with logitech profiler all I need to do is look back down left or right . It takes a bit more but I can do it with sidewinder ffb without a profiler just takes some time .

I am not sure if it is just my system or not but i noticed an unusual amount of delay in vox when using this test. My FR stays around 59 and I have no issues using the regular version but this test seems sometimes to be over a sec from the time I tx until it finally comes through, even when the vox is set to my name.

It definitely "seemed to" on my system - based upon doing a "flyby" of the circling drones. My system is a Turtle Beach HPA2 headset connected to a SupremeFX X-Fi Audio Card (came with Asus Rampage LGA 775 MB).  I did however have to change the settings in the AH sound panel (as you mention having done).

Just tested the surround sound and same it dont work on my headset.  also frame rates keep getting lower now they hit in the low 30's with gv/planes/smoke around.  I logged back in with regular settting and it was back to 55 to 60 fps on the same field 2 minutes after switching versions.

Kazaa/Semp, can you describe how you are testing for surround sound?  Maybe you are referring to something different than I am.  I run the game, choose the F4U-1A, and hold down F while alternating 4 and 6 on the number pad.  When I'm looking left, I hear the sound of the guns predominantly in my right ear, and when I look right, I hear the guns predominantly in my left ear. (Interestingly enough, when I do a Linda Blair the sound is equal in both, but more "muffled" than when I'm looking forward).

Alternately, I can climb above the circling drones, and make a crossing pass under or over one of them, and hear it's engine noise track it's position as it passes my line of travel under/over my aircraft (it's easiest to hear with my own engine off).

Or is this not what you mean when you refer to not having surround sound?

I am using my headset right now. I have the speakers radio button selected, and moving the sliders still adjusts sound volumes in game. Not sure if the radio buttons actually select the sound devices used, but just wanted to bring it up.

Overall sounds are nice, but they seem unsually loud. Explosions, external engines, and guns seem too loud IMO. Frame rates are fine, the game minimizes as expected, and overall works fine on my end.

EDIT:

Just found this glitch the moment I posted the previous reply. When you have a program that is windowed and is visibly "above" the Aces High game, you get a glitch when you close those windows. So I attempted to close the AH game by right clicking on the task bar and selecting "Close". The game then fails to respond and I have to end task.

Don't worry Plazus i sometime's get that with the normal version and other game's and program's. I think what it is is that you are trying to minimise one program/game and before your processor and computer have finished that task you are trying to view another program/game. For example when its just me and none of my squadmate's are on at the same time i like to listen to music as i fly and fight. But when they come on and chat over vox i minimize ace's and maximize windows media player. that will happen as ace's hasn't finished minimizing yet an so forth but if i leave it a couple of minute's it's OK ace's is minimized and media player is up.

Hope this has helped.

And i have a duel core processor. :)

I test surround sound by how planes fly by me.  I can see plane passing by my right and hear sound right side as it gets closer then as it moves away.  In beta it is just loud on both sides.  No distinct sound on right side.  Also frame rates are terrible still in the 30s while twice that much in regular version.

Semp,

I'm only guessing, but the part that's probably of use (if any) is going to be the sound devices section, which is missing from your post.

Minor: F4F and P38G do a nose dive into the runway after takeoff. Also, Auto Pilot Light flickers.

Flew the P-38G last night for 5 sorties and never once did it want to do a nose dive into the runway after take off nor did the auto-take off behave out of the ordinary.

I was wondering and will test this over the weekend if nobody else has already.  Has anyone tested the offline mission's warp feature that has been broken?  Is it fixed in this version or still broken?

Ok problem Solved i found out what whent wrong and i shall post it here Skuzzy you may want to pass this onto Pyro And hitech. Ok so last night my Ace's went Crazy as you can see from the picture i posted last night. So after posting for help i Shut the Computer down for the night and started it up today again. And i got the normal loading up of ace's but there was a hidden catch. When i tried to go into an Arena after the loading bar on the page was finished screen went a bit funny and then it said that Ace's High II exe is not responding. So i deleted the entire game from my system and redownloaded it and installed it and now it works perfectly. ( Oh and if you do this dont put your Stick setting's back in the Folder as you would normally do. I did this and came up with the same problem again. ) So after another uninstall and reinstall it works like a charm

But here is the catch, Idownloaded the test version of Ace's and was trying it out. Very good may i add. But the catch is that my AntiVirus software detected a virus before i Had to uninstall the game today. And low and behold the virus was the Test version of Ace's High and thus my anti virus sofware Auto delleted it and every other bar a few version update exe files. And thus also damaged the Normal Ace's High II exe file thus thing's went wonky on me.

So Skuzzy i don't know if you would like to tell Hitech and Pyro about this as i could be a simple wee tweak they and you need to do.

My Anti Virus Software is Kaspersky Internet 2010 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010.

Iv had the software for around 6 and a half months with no problems till now with ace's.

Ok here is my problem, I think I know how to fix it but what the hey.

With the regular version I get no prpoblems running the game. 65 FPS.

Now here is thwe problem. I d/l the neweast version of the test and run it, no bubbles no troubles except the vox is delayed, same as some of the others that posted. The last couple of times I have tried to run the test version it CTD after the intro screen.

Now my therory is I need to delete either the test icon, and D/L the test version again or the hmtag or whatever its called. (Sorry I'm not in front of my computer)

FYI I will post a dxdiag when I get back home.

That sounds familiar i had similar problem with the main version on saturday night then on sunday i could get in the game but as i tried to get in an arena it would load and right as it's about to let me in Puff it say's Ace's High II exe not responding. And me and Skuzzy came to the conclusion that i had downloaded the test version and forgot to temperally shut my Anti virus software down like what we do for update's. Short story is i removed all of Ace's even the folder in my C;\ drive redownloaded the proper version and installed it again. Now this took me two attempts as i also tried to reinput my stick settings but it still did the same. It appeared to me that everything was nackered by my anti virus software.  :cry
Oh and even if you saved the download dont use it it may have been hit aswell.  :(

But really ask Skuzzy or Hitech. But the problem sounds similar and that was the quik and easy fix for me  :aok

When I tune to SERVER offline and speak conversationaly "1, 2, 3, 4". Either the word one is garbled for a moment then a 1-2 second delay and "1, 2, 3, 4" is spoken. Or the word one cuts off with a 1-2 second delay and "2, 3, 4" finish speaking clearly. If I hold the key down for a second then speak "1, 2, 3, 4" rapidly it all comes out clearly but spoken rapidly. After I'm fiished speaking the SERVER name will stay visible up to 15 seconds without the key being held down.

My voice quality now sounds like myself instead of a newbi sqweeker. All of the sound hardware sources and volume selctions stay put after closing the GUI in this version.
