I love the Spitfire for its looks, history, and performance.

I despise the Spitfire in AH due to its reputation.

My father-in-law flew Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Mosquitoes during the war.  He didn't like the Spit because of the gas tank right behind the pilot.

He meant right in front of the pilot.
The 109 is right under and behind the pilot.

There was an aux. tank added behind the pilot that caused flight restriction similar to those applied to the Mustang with the fuselage tank.

Which spitfire did he fly?
Only the really late ones had a fuel tank behind the pilot.
