Title: New iPhone....
Post by: Shuffler on June 25, 2010, 12:24:28 PM
Complaints about reception have been answered by Steve Jobs....... "your holding it wrong".

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/mobile/06/25/iphone.problems.response/index.html?hpt=T2 (http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/mobile/06/25/iphone.problems.response/index.html?hpt=T2)

Evidently there is a certain way they should be held. In the future we'll refer to it as the Apple Grip. :D

Great way to explain away a poor design feature.

My favorite was an old computer marketing bit that described the poor off axis viewing of their LCD screen as a "security feature".

Get an EVO.  The plans are cheaper and it's a better phone.

Im waiting a little bit for my new phone but definitely have to get one before I leave for camp mid August.

My original Tilt is starting to go and is evident, but doenst help Ive dropped it so many damn times over the year.  Kinda surprised its still holding up.

Ive refused to get an iPhone since day 1.  I liked having the business type feel on the Tilt with the Office package on it.

Ive always liked HTC phones as a preferable choice.  Ive been keeping an eye on the phones coming out hoping that HTC finally releases what I want, a full QWERTY and Android.  Sure they released the Aria but doesnt have that full QWERTY.  They released the Wildfire which would be ideal what I want but only in Europe.  If it will be released in the US is up in the air.

So far the Apple zealots have it covered.

"It is about time someone came out with a phone that actually requires it to be held properly to be used."
"I do not know what the big deal is.  Block any antennae and any phone will stop working."
"I am sure Apple will come out with a left handed version of the phone.  I am right handed so it is really not a big deal."
"The press is just looking for something to complain about.  Everyone is so jealous of Apple."
"Apple never makes mistakes.  They engineer their products to be the best in the world.  Anyone denying that has their head put in a very dark, damp, smelly place."
"Poor Steve Jobs.  Having to deal with so many idiots.  What do you expect from PC users?"
"I have never had any problems with anything from Apple.  I think it is just a conspiracy lead by Microsoft."
"It is the best phone ever created.  People will always look for anything they can so they can say something negative about it."
"If the green eyed monsters would get their own iPhone, then none of this would be happening."
"If I as not so sexy, they would not be complaining.  That is what Apple's products do for me and I will never give them up!"

Ok, I am getting nauseous.

Apple zealots are just a bunch of raging mongoloids. I've got an iPhone 1g and upgraded to the 3GS for my construction compAny. It fills my need of sending video to subs when their work looks ducked up. For me, it's a tool - nothing more.

I've got a few aviation apps with moving maps, approach plates, weather, etc. , a few porn pages, some music - but that's it. As an email appliance it does the job. As for standing outside for 5 days in 90* weather to stink like a wet dog, they need a job.

I am surprised Wolfala.  My Wife was handed an iPhone for work and she had it about a week before tossing it back to the company and telling them, "Pretty phone.  Impractical for field work (she drops phones a lot)".  She has to go to a lot of construction sites to review drawings when questions come up.  Also for site reviews as progress at a site might require it for code purposes.

Well,

if she's dropping it then it's not for her. I got a battery pack also so any drops are attenuated. If I'm
reviewing shop drawings, I've gotm there. If were trying to find a spec, we can drill down into them via the exchange in office. If I've got a toejambag sub lying his bellybutton off, I'm
recording his conversation and sticking it to him when
he gets caught (single party consent in NY and NJ). Actually had a sub of a hvac sub recently claim
they lost an entire day bc they didn't have a t-25h bit to remove some radiator covers to balancing for the building heating system. They were claiming a $5000 per day delay. Went out to the site, asked the worker if they really lost an entire day. Nope guy says 10 minutes but his boss claimed the entire day. PM of the sub calls me parroting the entire day story and i play back the workers story. That sub got fired on the spot.

I can't have that flexability with a black berry.

She does not have a black berry.  They ended up with some type of Droid based phone.  She does the same thing you do.  Records meetings, site pictures, carries all the drawings around with her and so on.  Big thing for her is accessing the building code reference database back at the office.

Just stumbling around all the sites I visit to keep up on virus/malware/spyware reports, among other things.  A couple of the sites had some long threads about it.

Not sure about the 'glee' part.  I think most people who do not care one way or the other about about Apple products are doing much more than 'meh'.  I fit in that category.  Makes no difference to me.  None of Apple's products fit my needs.

I use the word 'zealot' to cover those who are irrational in thier support of some piece of hardware or software.  There are all manner of zealots about.  ATI, NVidia, PC, Apple, and so on.

Im an ATT user hence why people here are talking about iPhone.  Im not going go out and buy an Evo to unlock.

The Aria and Wildfire are supposed to be the next top phones from HTC.  Im personally hoping the Wildfire comes to ATT as that is what I will be getting if it comes to the US before mid August.

This is how the Aria compares to the Evo.

Got a 3GS myself, but got it free.
Like the phone, easy to use, but not worth the 450GBP if I had had to pay for it.

One of my friends spent 10 hours in line to get one, his face is as red as a lobster from the bad sunburn he got.  But hey!  He got his diddlyin' iPhone.  Couldn't help but laugh at him, which caused him to frown and make him cry in pain from the sunburn which then made me laugh even more.

The new iPhone has a MAJOR reception problem... and it's actually not AT&T's fault, that I'm surprised by.  But 1 - it's apple, 2 - they're still using AT&T, 3 - it's sucking, 4 - not surprised.

Black berry, driod, and the google phone are much better choices.  Any bets Apple won't ditch AT&Fail and won't release a decent phone for those with half a brain in _another_ couple years?

What, you mean she doesn't memorize the state, county and city ordnances like the rest of us?!   :furious

Droid is good but I feel it's trying ot be the iPhone, I like to use the Blackberry for work, it strikes me as more of a buisness tool than play tool and I can use it to pull up PDFs from the office all the time too.

You ARE aware that recording someones voice, without a warrant or their consent is illegal right?
http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs9-wrtp.htm

that would include your state

States Requiring Two Party Notification

Connecticut

"Connecticut joined the ranks of two-party consent about 3 years ago. The State Police there is quite diligent in enforcing the law. Ironic, since they were the ones responsible for the law going into effect by illegally recording the telephone calls of prisoners at the individual barrack when arrested."

Skuzzy you'll love this .... http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=18805

Quote
Apple recently has come under fire for engaging in a campaign of moralistic censorship when it comes to the applications it allows on its mobile devices.  That campaign is perhaps made more ironic by Apple's iconic 1984 commercial, in which it depicted itself as the face of freedom, taking down Big Brother.  Now with a new announcement that it will be watching its device owners' every move, it seems unlikely that the accusation that it has become Big Brother will go away anytime soon.

The news that Apple would be collecting the "precise" "real-time geographic location" of its users' iPhones, iPads and computers was announced this week via the rollout of the company's new privacy policy.

Customers have the "option" to opt in, but Apple is reportedly punishing those who decline to accept the checkbox sort of privacy agreement.  According to the LA Times, "Until they agree, they cannot download anything through the [iTunes] store."

That means no apps, music, or iBooks (from Apple) for those who opt out.

The company says there's no harm in letting it follow your every move.  It says it will largely use the information for internal purpose such as MobileMe, the "Find My iPhone" app, and targeted advertising.  It will also share the info with third-party app-makers who are looking to create location aware apps like social networking services or tweets.

Welcome to the cult of jobs ;)

yeah reckon they dropped the ball on that one, for lefties the gap between the antennae is always going to be covered by the base of your thumb. doesnt look like it'll be a problem for me as a rightie though, gonna try one next week. at least the bumper thingy solves it, not ideal but usable. might even go for a 3GS as theyre cheap now, still not sure what the 4 has over the 3 as I wont be gaming on it or using the video calling.

I don't think two party Notification applies.

You can always record your own conversations without notifying anyone. I do believe that this only applies to you and one other participant.

What you cant do is record two other peoples conversation without letting them know.

That is why when a company calls you and they want to record the conversation they always notify because the company isnt one of the parties. it is a conversation between the CSR and the Customer , but the CSR could technically record the call herself.

You might want to keep a heads up over the next year, or so, as there appears to be a shift in the virus creators attention towards Apple's products.

Apple's products have plenty of security holes in them.  If the virus creation community really starts paying attention to Apple products, Apple users are going to have quite a busy time fending off viruses/malware/spyware.

Just FYI.

Good to know, thanks

My wife bought me an iphone for my birthday last year, and I actually didn't want it, because it was the "in" thing, but I compared it to the competition at the time and it was the best choice. I have it, i am happy with it, it has a couple of apps I use, and that photo (Sulu sea) I posted in the forum some time back was taken using it,  it works but I wouldn't walk over broken glass to get it.

Yeah a few years ago there was a rash of email issues with the service, haven't had a repeat thankfuly since then, but can understand what her company switched away back then but would encourage them that it's been resolved if they have any desire to return to them.

I grew up in a house with two workaholic architects (my mother is a project leader specializing in I believe what they still call class 1A occupation (hospitals, universities, etc.) and my father is a Landscape Arch. and inherited his buisness from the man who founded Valley Crest landscape maint. (i think they're still the largest maint.. company in the state) and who recieved license #8 when the state started issueing them eons ago.) and thus had a good understanding of codes and ordnances and probabley why I fell back on a CAD degree after repeated failures in convincing them to help put me through aircraft mechanic trade schools, but that's another story.  Clients are always a fun discussion at the dinner table, code compliances or other.

In the final stages of construction at UCLA for their new Ronald Regan MC they opted to upgrade a _major_ piece of radiology equipment but were having a difficult time understanding why the instalation add-service cost was so steep.  Critical items they were having a very hard time comprehending, such as the building almost being completed at the time and there being no entry or access large enough to bring in the magnets (this included some hallways to reach the equipment's destination in the center of the building too), the demolition/disposal/reinstalation of the lead/radiation-shielding for the room holding the equipment as one of the room's walls needed to be taken out then rebuilt for the instalation and pluss all the radiation-shielded utilities that were in the way of the new machine.  At the time my mother was recovering from colon cancer and this major add-service ontop of others was demanding a visit to the site almost twice a day,  so she worked it out with her boss and the construction manager to have me run around the site top to bottom as a gopher and representative for her and her office in the last weeks of the construction and was honestly one of the funnest job stints I've had.

And yup, PDF is the standard for issues and record... how many people here in the AH community can pullup a drawing as a PDF view it and print it properly compared to those of us versed well enough in the language of CAD-monkey and autodesk to do the same.

Thats was the first Android to be released on ATT and now they are coming out quickly with Samsung to release one in week or 2, the Samsung Captivate after the Aria was released last week.

There is supposed to be a total of 5 android phones to be released before September by ATT and right now 4 of the 5 are known.  The Aria, Lancaster, Captivate, the Dell Aero.

I have one of the new iPhones and I love it - really don't understand all the negative comments I am seeing.  Everything is so clear on it and the camera is truly unbelievable, the quality of the photos fantastic!

I got mine on launch day after leaving home at 3:00 am, arriving at the Apple store at 4:30 am.  Even then there were about 20 people waiting in front of me.  The shop opened at 7:00 am, with staff running out, running around the queues and hi-5ing people as they ran past.  The atmosphere was great and it was finally my turn at about 8:30 am.  While we waited people came round with free coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts - I ended up having 3 doughnuts lol - diet out of the window for one day :)

Had it just a week now and not had any reception problems though I do have a bumper on.  I think the new iPhone is absolutely brilliant!  :p

(sent from my iPad). :D

Hi Nef!  :)  Mostly in World of Warcraft these days... totally addicted :lol with level four 80s now.  I do keep coming back here for the scenarios though, and came on to see when the next one is - set myself an alarm for 1:00 am on Saturday morning to sign up.  :D  So, how are you doing?  :)

Didn't ever consider myself an Apple fan-boi - in fact I think it's kind of ironic how Jobs has turned himself into the controlling Big-Brother type that once upon a time Apple actively pitched themselves against.

That said, a quick scan around the house last night revealed:

1. G4 Powerbook laptop
2. 2 iPhones
3. Apple TV
5. Apple Airport
6. 24" iMac

Insidious bu**ers.
