Title: Squid Web Proxy
Post by: Bino on June 25, 2010, 10:17:30 PM
At work I just set up a Dell R300 server with Fedora 13, Squid 3.1.4, squidGuard 1.4, and the list from URLBlacklist.  This is to run as an interception proxy (default gateway for the client PCs) and net-nanny a small user base of around 150, and replaces an aging rig running CENTOS/Squid 2.6/Websense 5.  I had to put a fair amount of hand-crafting into the whole thing to get it running (like twiddling iptables for the port forwarding and NAT, ugh!), but sure runs nicely now in my "beta test". Other than the hardware, the only expense should be US $70 for each year's worth of monthly blacklist updates.

Just wondered if anyone had any tips or caveats about Squid...?

This would probably receive a better response in Hardware and Software (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/board,18.0.html). :aok

Why in the heck would you replace CentOS with Fedora?

Gents, comments like that are not helpful at all.  In fact, they are actively anti-helpful.  I cannot fathom why you would want to make gratuitously snide, rude remarks like that.  You must be really miserable, unhappy people if you have to go out of your way merely to be nasty.  I pity you both.

I won't be needing any more input from you two, thanks.  Good bye.   :salute

 :rofl

It was legitimate question. CentOS is RHEL without branding. Typical server OS. Fedora isn't and has extremely short life cycle. Only noob would pick Fedora over CentOS, so I'd rather ask if there was a special reason for that.

Also, no need to pity anyone but organization which hired you. They'll have to pay for your lack of expertise.

While your points hold some ground they're not contributing in a helpful way and especially in a positive tone. Give advice, don't flame. Nobody is born perfect.
