British Soccer - 22 prima donna hooligans who happen to be kicking the same ball in two directions.
American Football - The reason why Great Britain still speaks English.
-
Yeah... soccer players sure do a lot of creating.

Everyone knows we call it what we do, because it just pisses everyone off.
Why do they call it "Great" Britain?

-
its called great britain simply because its the largest of the british isles, the other large one used to be known as little britain and is now known as ireland.

Did you learn nothing? It's football vs. American 'football'.

Comments typical of a toe-rag. Hurrah for you!
-
yeah amazing isnt it.
you would think given the context of AH and the number of times that BoB events, scenarios, snapshots etc have been run that people would at least know the dates of the BoB and USA's entry into WWII
-
Where does the term toe-rag come from?
BTW lets keep it civil...we're still the best friends we have in this ugly world. :)
-
Football vs Soccer
Fixed!
-
Classic from John Cleese.
It makes sense for the name of football (American) to be changed to Gridiron.
-
IIRC, the name for American "football" was due to the length of the ball.

11" =/= 12"

11" =/= 12"
It's not measured by direct height. Take a flexible tape and measure again tip to tip.

Bloody English don't even know their own history of "Soccer."
-
Actually American Football is more closely related to it's more violent counterpart, Rugby.
In real terms American Football should be called, Wussified Rugby!

I thought the USA would get right into a game like Rugby League, I'm really surprised it hasn't caught on.

An excellent piece of research from the Yahoo sports hack. :lol
Look up the Latin word 'soccus'.
Note the 'Castle soceries'?
The term does indeed precede 'football'. In the spirit of fairness, we'd be happy to oblige you and refer to football as soccer if you reciprocate and refer to your football as 'American rules rugby' and to baseball as rounders. We are also prepared to refer to netball as 'women's basketball'.
I trust that this is satisfactory. :aok

Where does the term toe-rag come from?
Two versions I have heard and both refer to being a rascal and/or a vagrant. The first is that 'toe-rag' refers to the rags of cloth worn around a vagrants feet and was originaly coined as an insult or derogatory name. The second refers to the grubby children that would shine your shoes in the street with their 'toe-rag' whilst probably also robbing you. More affectionate name than insult in this context but essentially the same meaning. The modern use of the term has moved onto to being a friendly way of calling someone a bit of a dirty rascal.

Hey, I never advocated a change to football from soccer. I am just saying that according to the yahoo story, it is ironic that America is being lectured of why the name soccer should not be. :O

Can you imagine trying to explain the rules to them. :bolt:
-
i dont even know them all :noid
-
the word football predates soccer by about 500 years years, even shakespeare uses it. :)
-
...And Rugby...that would even be older than American "Football"?
Football is the name.
Anyway, for the American "Football" fans, watch the real ones of rugger....errrr...Rugby....:

The first recorded use of the term was in 1424: 'The King forbiddes that na man play at the fut ball under the payne of 4d.'

yeah footy was illegal - iirc because we were expected to be practicing with our longbows in our spare time :D
-
Amazing! You managed to deduce a word in the English language originated in, of all places, England! Well done!
-
Why don't you deduce the origin of cornhole? On second thoughts, don't bother, since it's pretty obvious.
Fun this sarcasm, isn't it?
