Shouldn't it be "the French saved our arse day"?

Incorrect.
The Act Of Union between Scotland and England was signed in 1707 - a full 80 or so years before American independence. America gained independence from the United Kingdom - including Scotland, not from England.
Curiously, the US citizenship test gets this wrong as well:
Q: From which country did the United States of America gain independence?
Was it:
A: France
B: Germany
C: Spain
D: England
Aparently they have a bit of a hissy-fit when you add :
E: None of the above
Have a great holiday folks - happy 4th

He's saying that the british celebrate "we got our butts kicked day". "We" meaning the British.

I know, just letting him know that it wasn't really a "we got our butt kicked" but more of "we got side line, politically, by French day".

234 years to think of comebacks to the same old joke and you would think they'd have some better ones by now.
(But the speaking English one is funny, I'll admit.)
