Anyone have any files or manuals on J-85s?
Looking like I might go to work for a jet dragster team that uses J-85 (-17s mainly) and want to get a head start. Looks to be a pretty sweet deal, they will eventually be giving me a key to their shop. I was amazed at all the spares, cores, and race ready J-85 (some J-60's too) turbines they have. At least 5-6 engines and parts to build several more, the bulk of the material was not even stored in this area either. Nothing set in stone but I am excited to even be considered, this would be a one in a million job. Anything that can get me up to speed, even a little, would be well worth reading.

Hmmm you might try to get an airforce manual. J-85 is used in the T-38. The engines you will be working with may not have the afterburning section.

Jet dragsters almost always have the afterburner functional. "Burner pops" are the biggest part of the show, since the cars are slow.

J-85's are also used on C-123K providers...

Yes. Before they shortened the Top Fuel and AA/Fuel Coupes to 1000 feet, they were running 4.40 @ 330, and 4.60 @ 320 through the 1320.
Jet cars are no faster than Top Alcohol cars.
There have been a couple of Pro Mod cars dipping into the 5 second zone at around 250 or so. Granted, they're glorified circus cars that are really nothing more than stretched Pro Stock cars with Top Alcohol engines. But they have had a few go that fast.

Granted they are not the fastest, but past the 1/8th mile they are accelerating harder than a Top Fuel by a good margin.
This team has been 375+ on a runway....
Where would one procure an Air Force manual for the J-85?

That information probably is not public and usually considered 'controlled' substance. Therefore only hard copy is available which requires your signature with appropriate consequences.

The J-85, and its civilian counterpart the CJ610, is considered an outdated and inefficient design that is now some three or four decades old.
I highly doubt anything about this turbine has military or national ramifications surrounding it....

One thing that amazed me, not matter how much I inflated the cost of something the price he threw out was always higher. This little igniter box that has two connectors $800, outer shell of the hot section 4k, replacement turbine nozzle $700. He had a fresh overhauled J-60 in there from the factory, I didn't even bother to ask, was afraid to hear it. When he told me what I could build a jet dragster team for (400k) I said no thanks I will work on yours at that rate.

hey.....my reply earlier today, was kind of unnecessarily wise assed. sorry 'bout that dude.
it was stupidly hot in the shop(upwards of 115F), i was drinking water till i felt sick of it....and i shouldn't have typed anything feeling the way that i did.
i'm actually kinda jealous that you're gettin to work on them......... :aok

Dont worry about it CAP, I work in the heat and deal with the public everyday, either one is enough to get me going.

funny you mentioned both.
i have 2 customers that seem to like taking their cars to other shops, then calling me to see if they're being lied to. i had to hang up on the guy today. it;'s not good business, but he's costing me time every time he does that.......i'm a one man show at my shop. hopefully not for much longer though....getting a little burnt out.
