Sound quality was meh. 5.1 surround sound headsets seem more like a gimic.
Microphone quality was absolutely abysmal. It was almost inaudible, any sound which was picked up was drowned out by a hissing/cracking sound. My £25 bargin bin headset which I use as a backup is better then the Roccat Kave.

I've heard Turtle Beach has quality stuff.

Roccat Kave? awful name :lol
pretty much anything sold as "gaming" or "for gamers" will be much lower quality and much more expensive than the equivalent, guaranteed. its a marketeers dream, either bought by kids, or as presents for kids, or by people who think spending more money will give them an edge. there might be exceptions but I havent seen any lately.
its like the 100% premium for anything to do with weddings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gimiDBAK2wA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gimiDBAK2wA) :D
edit: some swearing, probably NSFW...

After my cheapo Saitek stopped working, I bought a 40 dollar Creative Fatality 3.5mm headset...possibly the best 40 bucks I've ever spent. Great sound, great bass, great mic, great fit, great price.

What your post should have said is "CHEAP 5.1 surround sound headsets seem more like a gimic".
Spend a little bit of cash for a nice pair of Turtle Beach headphones (http://www.amazon.com/Force-HPA2-Surround-Gaming-Headset/dp/B001BS4YAM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1278609402&sr=8-3), and you'll be BLOWN AWAY... I know I was.
BTW That link is go Amazon.com... $79.34US FTW! I'm sure you can find the European equivalent near you.
