Years back Fifi was in Seattle getting a paintjob up at Boeing and on a beautiful clear morning she, and two P51s flying along side each wing, flew right over my house at about 1000 feet, N to S.  Not only was it a wonderful thing to see, it was AMAZING to hear!

Go see her with her engines running!

70 years BoB anniversary this autumn. At Duxford, and I am bloody well going to be there.
On the 60th there were some 24 Spitfires around and flying, 4 Hurricanes, P51's, F4U's, FM2, F7F, F4F, F8F,B17, etc etc.
Reccommend Duxford. Here:

Will be there ;)

Boeing rebuilt an B-17F, finished it in '96. They flew it a few times afterwards. But I think it's in their museum in Seattle. They did a great job. Boeing found that B-29 in China Lake. The ship was named Doc, after one of the dwarffs in Snow White. They worked on her to get her so they could one time fly her to Wichita. I saw the engines at the Boeing Evertt plant when worked there. There was a shop there that was going to rebuild them.
Boeing had a web sight for the resortation of it. But they ether took it down or moved it. Would like to know how far they are on it. They will get it up to flyable.
Also, at their Museum of Flight, they were working on another one there. But the wing spar is in bad shape. They were going to get it restored also, but they can only taxi her around. Not going to be flyable.

Last i heard the B-29 was in parts.  Nobody really knows what is going on as i asked a lot of people who work for Boeing.

B-29 has to be nightmarishly more expensive than a B-17 to deal with

Strategic Air Command Museum in Nebraska is restoring a B-29. You can actually watch some of the restoration efforts from behind a large glass window.

CAP, I have just grown weary of all the colonel bs that seems to eminate from the CAF along with their constant destruction of pieces of history.  I do know that shortly after FiFi was grounded, I was checking her out when we saw the aileron bell crank on the rear spar.  You could put your finger through the flanges mounting it to the spar.  Hardly like an inspection had been done in years...

Take that for what it is worth.

UUMM..........that sounds somewhat scary to me, and like someone needs to review their procedures, before they kill someone.

FIFI Flight Postponed 7/12/2010

The historic B-29 plane, FIFI, was supposed to take flight this morning.

However, weather and Federal Aviation Administration regulations prevented that from happening. The FAA is now requiring six crew members instead of four. The volunteer crew is stationed all over the country, making it difficult to call them in last minute.

To compensate those who came to watch the flight the Commemorative Air Force gave free tours of the cockpit. Crew Chief Dave miller says FIFI is the only flying B-29 left in the world and this piece of history is important to people all over the world.

"The preservation is very important… using it as more than a static display, to take it around and show it to people so they can hear it, and see it, and feel it and understand what the men and women who flew it really went through."

FIFI was produced in 1945, marking this year as her 65th birthday. $1.5 million has gone into restoring this plane, that is said to have ended WWII and saved millions of lives.

The CAF hopes to fly FIFI sometime this week. We will be giving updates as we receive them. If you have any questions about FIFI you can go to www.commemorativeairforce.org .

It's a shame the engines needed to be replaced but I guess you can't expect the parts supply to be around forever.

We saw FIFI fly at an airshow in Elmira NY about ten years ago. What a great thing to see! Compared to the B17's you could really tell how much bigger they were. When we arrived at the airfield, we looked all over for the mighty B29 thinking it would be the largest plane there and easy to spot. Eventually, we found the "poor little thing" parked next to a C5 Galaxy! No disrespect. Almost any other plane parked next to a C5 would look small. It's something we talk about to this day. A great plane!

CAF B-29 Flight Delay Continues

MIDLAND, TEXAS (July 15, 2010) –The Commemorative Air Force announced today that due to the heavy workload of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and recent accidents in the West Texas area, the FAA will not have the opportunity to complete the required certifications for the B-29 until the week of July 26th at the earliest.

“We will continue working with the FAA as their representative becomes available,” said CAF President and CEO Stephan Brown. The CAF member-volunteers have completed the necessary ground tests that make us confident that FIFI will have successful flights.”

The CAF hopes to complete the certification during the week of July 26 so that flight-testing can begin the week of Aug. 2, 2010.
