Post by: TheWobble on December 29, 2000, 09:15:00 PM
I got these really toejamty speakers for x-mass and now i must return them, they cost about $200 so i figure its time to get rid of the voodoo3 3000 that is bogging my athlon 800 down.
so what is the best card I can get for $200, not much less and not much more. no bargan cards (mx)
ok thanks for help!

ok ok ok on a side note, I have been looking at a v5 5500 and the one thing that I have noticed is it is kinda power hungry, I am running yer basic 250watt powersupply with the notoriously power hungry Athlon on it will the v5 pull too much, just a concern.  Any thoughts on this too?

V5 will fit fine, and you likely won't have any power issues.
Your other option is a Geforce2 MX.  From watchin the boards it seems like the V5 is easier and more hassle free than the nVidia option for AH.  Though this may change I dunno.
Of course having said all that... you do know 3dfx is gone now huh?

Thanks, i think thats what im going to go with, and it only costs $180, the bastard better fit!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) i have a mid tower case so it shouldent be a problem. What are the best settings for AH as far as all the little tweaks you can do to the V5?

I don't bother with too many tweaks for the V5 Wobble.  I run 1024x768 32 bit color and 2x FSAA.  FSAA is THE thing for AH and flying/driving games in general.

I know 3DFX is going going gone... but I still LOVE this card.

Will a 250 Watt PS be too weak?  Yes, probably.  The V5 and GeForce2 both draw tons of power.

You'll probably want to invest in a good 300W power supply on AMD's approved list.

I've used Sparkle and Antec 300W supplies and both are good.  (They are just under $60 normally.)  Trust me, you can tell a good PS from a cheap one the second you see it.

I cant tell anyone to buy a voodoo card. feb  12 no more support, and the company is gone. Just a little bit more money and you could get your self a Geforce 2 GTS 32 meg.
Look on ebay there is a guy on there that auctions them off but also sells them for a GREAT price and shipping was only 5 bucks!!!!!!!!!!!! priority!!!!!!! I got a 64 meg pro for only 260 off of this guy. I will post here again when i get home and give you his email addy.

I dont even know if you can find any voodoo cards on the shelf anymore

First off I hate the MA, i have the money to play it if i want but i just get annoyed with it after a while, i like H2H where there is just 8 people that usually work together not the 200 player furball fest where everyone is just trying to up and get a kill as fast as possable, but that is off subject.

I had a TNT2 Ultra and i HATED IT, i had better performance with the voodoo3 i have now, I will probably never buy any Nvidia products, 3dfx has treated me well and even if Nvidia toejams on them they still will not be better than them, or at least to me they wont.

do a search on Pricewatch.com and you can find GeForce2 GTS 32mb for less than $200, much less. Thats much better, MUCH better than the MX.

the new v5 will arrive day after tommorrow, thats what im getting, i hate nvidia stuff.  All im trying to figure out now is the powersupply issue, as it stands im just going to try it with the 250watt if it works, thats fine if not i might try something else, I am just looking fo an option other than having to buy another powersupply.

Dunno - I've been running it on a stock 235W PSU although it's a PIII not an Athlon - not sure if they are vastly different in power consumption.

But FSAA is THE thing as Lepth is saying - I look at screenshots people are posting without it and keep thinking "Gawd it looks awful"   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif). Even CFS2 looks gorgeous with it   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

Support? Hmmm... It works with no probs on DX8... Why does one need support if it "ain't broke"?   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

(Shame about 3dfx though - it was nVidia vs 3dfx that pushed graphics cards to the level of performance we have now..   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Well i hooked up the other 250 PS and have it running all hard disks, cd-roms and floppy drives, that way all the orignal one that is hooked to the MOBO will have to power is the board, board, ram, mice and other misc, I think that pushing the hard disks and cd-roms and floppy to the other powersupply should free up enough power to push the v5 without problems.
