Title: Brand name of GeForce 2 you would recommend?
Post by: Ripsnort on March 12, 2001, 02:09:00 PM
Okay, the thread below convinced me to do some vid card upgrading.

Which Geforce 2 -32 meg card you recommend, and which brand should I most definately stay away from? Or does it matter?

I've seen Abit, Guillimot, etc...not sure which is best, or different, etc.

I don't know too much about them, but I would probably buy Creative's.
Asus sounds good too.
Guillemots at least has had best GTS GF2 (or was it ultra),though, that can be seen in the price as well.
I don't know about their MX cards, how those are.

As far as GeForce 2 cards go rip, If your not going to invest in something thats off the base board design (faster mem/more memory/ higher clock speeds) then it really doesnt matter IMHO which card you use. However, *INHAAAAAAAALE* If you want to shop around and look for the best fps/$$ there are a few things to keep in mind one being the GeForce3 , its expensive but its the best available, going lower we have the GeForce2 ultra/pro/GTS/MX respectively in decending order, which will range from $550 to $75 not counting the GF3. The large price range is due to the fact that there are many configurations of these cards, 64mb Ultra's to 12mb MX's, clock speeds differ as well as the latency of the memory chips being used. I wouldn't suggest the MX if it's for the purposes of a "Gamers upgrade" for that I would go no less than a 32mb GTS $250-$175 I've found the best price listings at  www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)  if your not afraid of buying online. I don't think I would recommend a 64mb card, the amount of memory in most cases is not the bottleneck, its the latency of the memory, if you do wanna spring for a higher card make sure you look for the latency of the memory the lower the better 5.5ns is the lowest right now (it could be lower) otherwise it's not worth the cost to just pay for more mem. I hope this helps.

Leadtek makes a great card.  Monster heatsink on it and it includes the software to overclock it.

 I'm now running the Asus V7700. 32DDR
Very nice card, blows my old TnT2 32 meg card away.
You will not regret the upgrade to the GForce2.

Looks pretty sweet Rip.  I don't think you can lose on these since nVidia supports the cards with their Det. drivers, so you don't need to worry about the vendor as much.

I say go for it.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Leadtek: Overclocking card.
eVGA:    Comes with 5.5ns DDR RAM (effectively a Pro card) and a value card.

Okay, last min. I changed to Leadtek "Pro" which (as mentioned above) allows overclocking. $164 bones...otw in 3 days!

I'll post the bench mark I use in AH, the diff between my old Ultra TNT2 (26 FPS in the "B17 in Hangar with Clipboard" benchmark) and the new card.  I'm hoping for at least a 25% increase in FR.

One more question, Leph, maybe you can answer this: When the card arrives, I imagine I should probably update the drivers as soon as I get the card installed, no?  Where is the best drivers (Detonaters?) website?

Wait for the G3 to become widely available, then go for a 64 MB G2, because they will have significantly dropped in price.

Best place for Detonator drivers is ofcourse nVidia but I've also found "leaked" or "unpublished" drivers at  www.planetgeforce.com (http://www.planetgeforce.com) . I also have the Leadtek....good choice.

I wouldn't bet on any 'significant' price drops, since G3 costs so much that theres plenty time to keep G2'2 price up.
Probably will take 3 months before you could talk about 'significant' price drop, and meanwhile it would require G3 lose its high price.
(and of course nVidia takes all the money it can get with the new product before drops price)

Will do JCY,  Specs are:

PIII-550 mhz
256k PC100 ram
Ultra TNT2-32 meg card V-SYNC ON(today)
DX7.01A

Machine is stripped of everything regarding software except Aces High and Office (and normal Win 98se stuff)

My benchmark I use is:
Resolution is set to 1024, 32 bit color.
Shut all background apps off.
Select "Nisles" terrain.
Select B17 with 50%fuel, 12x500 bombs.
Toggle 'Shift F1' to make sure I have the games highest resolution.
Select H for hangar to launch, start engines to idle, pop clipboardup, and take the high and low reading on FR.

Currently, I get 26 FPS with the Ultra, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say I get 36 with the new card.(but I wouldn't be surprised if I got 46 considering what I've read)

if you want to have a real benchmark, I recommend 3D Mark program for that.
It's available for free download at: http://www.madonion.com (http://www.madonion.com)

(they just released new version of it, 2001)

Thks Fishu, but the only benchmark that means anything to me is the one I use within the game, that tells performance in raw data with respect to the software being used...Aces High.

Good use for 3D mark 2001 is to get points for your computer and compare them to other results.
then you can see if its badly behind average and try to fix it  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Someones had wayyyy too low results with TB 1ghz..  which makes me feel sad for such waste.

I just talked with friend who installed 3-D Mark 2001 to his Athlon 800/GF GTS. His words were exactly "That program did put my pc on its knees..."
That program really gives your CPU and GPU some work to do  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Jcy with GeForce2 you propably would get at least same as I, 70-90fps in 1024*768 32bit

Edit: In flight I meant.

Jcy should be getting better than that!(25 FPS)  He's got a 900mhz!  Whats missing to his equation?

Jcy, what resolution/color are you using in the game?  I'm using 1024/32 bit for my benchmark.

your benchmark is how im setup
all the time. 1024x768  32 bit
and when i get into clouds or smoking
fields  it gets low. if i fly right
thru smoke it gets choppy. i feel like
i should be better. it didnt go up from
my p3 500 and gigabyte MB. i uppgraded and
go no better fps. now i need a better card
so i can get full use of my processor.

edit: i did the benchmark test that fishu
talked about from madonion, and i scored
a 1402. dont know if thats good or bad

well, I got 1250 with Celeron 566@850 and TNT2 in 3d mark 2001
(memory doesnt seem to add for much kick in 3d mark)
I'd say thats quite bad, but will get alot better with new video card, guaranteed. (if its also newer technology  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif))

jcy, thats a pretty low score for the hardware you have. I'd say your video card and RAM are your bottlenecks. I get about 3800-4000 on the 3DMark, and I'm running a 700mhz Athlon, Geforce 256 and 196mb of PC100 on a Asus K7M mobo. You should look into getting some more RAM if you are going to upgrade. I just ordered 256mb of PC133 for $69. Also picked up my Geforce for $100. It's an older 256 with 32mb of SDRAM, but it still gave me a big improvement over my old TNT2.

*EDIT- btw, I get 47fps using Rips hangar benchmark.

128 133rdram
gelforce pro 256 32mb
This is a Dell system , don't know mobo .

4456 with 6.50 drivers
4673 with 7.52

Nothing is overclocked but
I used Lep's site to setup pc . Plus
Norton's Utilites , speeddisk etc , this
seems to really speed up apps loading .

Just learned about this program last week reading this board . Seems ok to test drivers etc I guess . Have to try it on my old 333 66bus with ATI card and see how low it goes  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

A lot of nice info here , learning alot on this board , ty all .

He uses a benchmark test pretty well the same as the one Ripsnort is using.  You can see what fps others with similiar systems are
getting, and help out others by posting your own.
