Hi,
I am currently running a Duron at 1Ghz in an Asus A7V motherboard.
I am going to, uhhh.. "borrow" (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) a Thunderbird of the same speed from a friend.
Should I see a noticeable performance increase?

Depends on the application. Basically the Tbird has more L2 Cache ram. In some applications this can make a big difference, in some others the difference is small.
Most benchmarks tend to show the Duron equal to the Thunderbird 100 Mhz slower. (I.e. Duron 800 = Tbird 700 )
I'd be careful, it's really easy to crack the die on the CPU by taking fans on and off... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Thanks bloom, thats what I figured.
With more cache the system is less prone to use ram wich is much slower than on-die cache.
Thanks for the advice, Its very hard to remove my heatsink, but I've done it several times already, I hope its uneventful this time (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I should point out that this particular AXIA T-Bird was shot with a pellet gun....

But, they are very delicate. Both are good chips, just go with your budget. BTW, the new AXIA T-Birds overclock REALLY well if you are into that.

Also make sure that heatsink/fan is making good contact with the Duron/Tbird. I burned up my first one by putting the fan on backwards, it didn't make contact with die. Yea I do feel dumb. Takes about 5 secs to burn up the chip with no heatsink.
I had a Duron 800 (oc'd 1000) and now have a TBird 1.1Ghz. You gain a few fps with Tbird in AH but not many. The Duron is a great chip for the price.

Those AXIA stepping Tbirds are VERY easy to overclock. I've heard of the 1 gigs going to 1.3 and 1.4 GHz.
