If you got it, stay away from me, because I cannot afford to get it, got it?

lol Skuzzy, the beta has been out for 1 year. Check out HDstarcraft on Youtube to watch some gameplay.

This was one of the best games casted from the beta, part 1-4 in decending order:

They are trying to develop a vaccine, but it's slow going.

Come on Skuzzy, don't you want to step in the shoes of Old Jimmy Raynor and dispense some justice? I know you've got to have some anger built up after dealing with us idiots all week.  :D

Oh I can't wait! Those new Terran Battle Cruisers look awesome!

Who is Jimmy Raynor?

I never played the original and I quit buying any box games due to all the destructive DRM that comes with them.  Actually, i know it is only a subset of games that have had really horrible DRM, but the game industry is not required to put any type of warnings on the box about that stuff, so you never know what might be there.

So I have just stayed away from it all.

It's not a problem Skuzzy, I just thought you were a Starcarft nut after hearing you liked Battlestar Galactica.  :D

DRM?

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. Some gaming companys force you to install a 3rd party "Watchdog" piece of software designed to prevent theft of content. The problem is these programs are usually not secure and can allow backdoors to open for malicious content to break into your machine. Also they're usually not removed when the game is uninstalled and have to be manually deleted.

I had a space game called X3 that installed a DRM on my old computer, right after the install my machine went nuts with spam pop ups that forced me to rollback eveything. I later searched and found out that this DRM had links to known spyware and it was recommended to not install the game.

Blizzard doesn't do DRM.  They do unique registry numbers that pretty much makes games impossible to resell.

They did do that recent forum deal where they were going to require you to post under your real name, but they backed off of that on the WoW forums at least.  I don't know about the Starcraft forums.

I thought Skuzzy was saying he was afraid of being infected and being unable to quit playing.  Which is a legitimate fear given Blizzard's past RTS games.

It should be easy enough to find out ahead of time what, if any, DRM is included when the Starcraft2 reviews start coming out.  I expect it to be similar to World of Warcraft... in that you get a long code that you have to enter and that registers the software under your username.  Which I hope doesn't mean you have to be online to play in single player mode, but it might.

Its interesting that Skuzzy didn't play Starcraft 1, given how liberal their DRM, if you can even call it that, was.  With the spawned copies and all, it made it very easy to take your PC to a friend's house who didn't have the game and legally play against them.  Did that many times.

All that said, I'm taking Calc 2 this summer and don't want to get wrapped up in a game I potentially can't put down until my class is over.  So in a couple weeks I'll have time to read some reviews and if they are positive, I'll buy it, then have 3 weeks to plow through the game until the fall semester starts.

I did not play Starcraft 1 because I did not know about it.  I recall seeing it on the shelf, but the pictures on the box did not look all that interesting.

I like a good RTS.  Blizzard writes pretty good code as well, although I am not a fan of them using the BitTorrent libraries for thier updates/patches.

I hope it is a success for them.

Title: Re: Starcraft 2

BitTorrent updates were implemented after the WoW popularity surge in which a patch day typically meant at some point or another the main Blizzard website was going to go down or be inaccessible due to the patch download traffic... typicaly sometime between 1pm and 4pm PST as everyone on the east coast started getting home and logging on, this gave you a three hour window after the servers came back up (between 10am and 1pm) of achieving a quick and trouble-free patch download.  At the time the best way to patch on a major patch day after the official servers started to bog down and "eat it" was to actually download the patch from a third-party site that blizzard opted to host the file on (IE: fileplanet), but even these started to have problems shortly before the BitTorrent patcher due to the volume of demand/downloads overflowing to the third-party download hosting sites, and often the original file would degrade and be bugged until fileplanet got around to reseting it.  I'm not a fan of the BitTorrent patcher either, but honestly given the scale and demand for the file on the date of the patch going live it's probabley one of the few examples of when using such a means made sence and overall improved the patching process.  After 48 hours the rush was over though and it was best to just download it straight from the Blizzard servers.

Starcraft wise, the first was a fun game and I loved the storylines, but multiplayer was nuts but surprisingly subpar in my terms of a strategical challenge, too many elitists spamming the same order of construction for their base and units as the other guy with the one who could spam the same buttons in the same order the fastest winning.  Personaly I'm waiting for the new Diablo.

KEKEKEKE ZERG RUSH ^_^

See, that's a really challenging multiplayer strategy game when everyone is just doing the same "best for suceeding" strategy as the other, with "the best" being those who can memorize a string of commands and then execute them in that order the fastest.

I give it 3-4 weeks of people getting their kicks outa zerg rushes and the single player storyline before the game plummets in popularity with exception to those who preffer that particular style and challenge of multiplayer gaming.

And of course you had me the Terran waller that would close of the entrance to my base and use a million bunkers + siege tanks to kill off the Warrior/Zergling spammer. Starcraft is one of the few games that I still play on a regular basis, the others being Aces High 2 and Battlefield 1942 Forgotten Hope.

Blizzard knows how to make great games, I would probably quit my job and never leave my room if they came out with a Starcraft MMORPG.

Yes, but your iMac cannot natively play 99% of the games I have on my shelf I do enjoy playing.  :neener:

If you have to boot Windows on your iMac. so you can play a game, your iMac is just as effected by DRM as any other computer.   :P

Nothing like WoW whatsoever. Now, if you'd said WarCraft or WarCraft II you'd been on to something (DAMN it. Drives me absolutely crazy that ever since WoW came out everyone has forgotten WarCraft started as strategy games. Even the movie that's being proposed is based on WoW and not the original games....)

I couldn't even play CnC 4 due to the fail of it, but this game is way different then that.  So far I have been loving the game, the story was a bit slow to get started but when it picks up it's awesome.  I'm almost finished with the game but it has plenty of replay and multiplayer value.  The way they do upgrades for units/buildings in story is quite nice and the it's almost like an RPG/RTS hybrid, very fun. :D
Would have had it finished if I hadn't slept so long today, blasted 36 hours no sleep. :P

Nah, only takes about 30mins or so. :P

Beat the story this morning around 10:30 and I gotta say the game was awesome, may not have been as good s SCI but definitely a great game.  This is gonna be a trilogy game (likely just gonna have a different subtitle then SCII 'Wings of Liberty") so there are some story holes that will leave ya a bit annoyed.  That final cinematic was a bit short I thought, but SC never did seem to be big on cinematic.

If anyone is ever up for a multiplayer game I'm willing to play. :D

Blizzard > EA.  Much more thorough in testing their games prior to release for bugs, balance, playability, etc.

Personally I'm waiting until prices drop a little, as I was in the beta but wasn't terribly impressed.  My late middle school/early high school years were essentially burned on SC, and some of the changes from the original I can't say I enjoy.  However, I do plan on enjoying the single player campaign, in a slightly less frantic environment than multiplayer.  Maybe I was just younger and faster, but I simply couldn't enjoy the Beta due to the pace, which felt significantly faster than I remember.

My G/F got Sims3 right when it came out, and only within the last week was she able to actually play it, as it would lock up her computer on a regular basis.  Last week they came out with a patch and all has been well ever since.  So it's been... what... A year now? maybe longer?

Sims2 was the same way.. my ex-wife played it all the time but all kinds of quirky things happened until they finally patched it several months after its release.  Her characters would have a baby, but the baby would disappear and since it was gone they couldn't feed it or bathe it and family services would eventually come take it away LOL.

I have to say though, Sims2 was pretty clever... my ex- was playing a husband and wife... and while the wife was at work the husband invited the neighbor lady over and they were getting it on.  While this was happening, the wife's mother came by for a visit, saw the other woman and left.  The husband left for work later on.  The wife came home from work and her mom came over and visited.  Then the mom left.  Then the husband came home and the wife slapped him across the face!!! HAHA I was laughing my butt off!

Yes Blizzard does release patches, but these rarely have anything to do with reliability of the software.. it's usually little things like speed improvements, or balancing changes.. things like that.

Wow, that was a crazy couple of days playing through the single player campaign.

Unbelievable game IMO, the animation is SICK, although the story is a little cheese-ish, wth, I was entertained.

I with the team would do a animated SC movie, I'd rather watch it than some Toy Story six or Shrek 15 anyday.

Highly recommended, even if you never played the first game.  If you did, they made a lot of stuff easier yet better..

IMO the only good RTS series of the last two decades are the C&C series until RA3, Warcraft, Starcraft, Age of Empires, and...yup got nothing else. Most of the older versions kept far away from DRM and until RA3 i hadn't had to deal with any online registration of any sort. My computer i run the higher games on is not connected and RA3 is still sitting in the box untouched.

I just bought SC2 the other night and all I can say is wow, leave it to Blizzard to make the installation screen interesting. So far I've only played through about 7 missions but I have to admit, they did an awesome job on this game and it was well worth the wait.

I'm just curious, does anyone else just sit in the cantina and listen to the jukebox? I've killed at least an hour listening to the songs over and over. That is the coolest thing ever and I love how they made it sound as if you were really in bar.
