Hypothetical situation: if you could have one aircraft for free, what would it be?
Requirements:
-Must have been in production between 1939 and 1945.
-Must have been in mass production, prototypes not allowed.
-You are allowed to have only one aircraft, and not allowed to buy a 2nd.
-You are not allowed to modify it.
Notes:
-Fuel is free so do not make your decision bases on fuel consumptions.
-When making your decision do not only pay attention to things you use in AH2, also note the cockpit size, note that controls are different (more things you need to control in a radial engine), and the visibility out of the canopy (bubble or cage).
-You will not be shooting anyone, so the guns really do not matter.
-
Spitfire mk XIV
-
B-17G
PS: You can not buy a second if the first was free MachFly :P :lol

really killnu ? I mean it is limp wristed enough to dogfight with in game.
Surely you would rather prefer to grace the endless blue in something more elegant. Such as a Beautiful Spitfire or Ki - 84?
Whilst posting this I feel a little tired but as it is my last night shift and I can return to the land of the living a touch of Joy!

hummmm, P-61

Hawker Hurricane Mk-IV

P-38L Hands down, assuming we're talking flying it in real life

yes, I belive he is talking about owning/flying IRL

That's correct

Spitfire XII

mossy, that way I could put all the girlfriend's luggage in the bombay, might have to accidently hit the wrong button though at about 15k but that would be ok also as I wouldn't have to take 2 hours loading and unloading it. :airplane:

Define "Mass Production".
P-80
Just because.

P-38L for sure. Tricycle gear makes planes easier to handle on ground, twin engine-reliability, plus nothing turns chicks heads like a Lightning.

P39 It has tricycle gear and car doors with rolldown windows! Also it has mid engine so the plane would be warmer than most ^.^

Need you ask? :)

I would have to pick from the three : P51D / Ki-84 / me262 I will pick the ki with a hurricane MK 22C gun package . :bolt:

I'd absolutely have to go with the P38. Always a spare something if anything breaks, tricycle gear for easier landing, and when you fire up those Allisons... vrroooOOOOOOOMMMM
-
would definitely have to be the Tempest because you dont see hardly any if any at all still flying :rock We have some old guys here that fly the Texans all the time about 6 of em, i could just imagine the look on their faces if i showed up in a Tempest :O

I would go "Wild" ...

There is actually only one correct answer here and it was given long long ago....
"It's the best damn fighter I've ever flown."
Fred M. Trapnell
A bit about him from Wiki
Frederick Mackay "Fred" Trapnell (July 9, 1902 - January 30, 1975) was a United States Navy admiral and aviation pioneer. Trapnell was the first Navy pilot to fly a jet aircraft, was considered the best, most experienced naval test aviator of his generation, co-founded the branch's first test pilot school
-
It would have to be the C205. There is just something elegant but brutal about her. It's the Ferrari of the skies.
-
So I'm wishing for a plane that I could own that would fly from point A to point B, w/out regard for fuel or operating costs?
PBY.
Lots of room and storage, plus it's amphibious which would open up lots of destinations that don't have traditional runways, and I've always thought it was a gorgeous airplane.
-
Excluding all the factors you exclude (and maintenance issues as well), the Mossie wins hands down - although it edges out the JU-88 by a squeak.
<S>
-
PBY Catalina.
H8K2 would be nice, but the maintenance would be impossible.
-
Ju52. Coolest plane ever
-
38L
Beautiful plane and single seat so I could tell acquaintance 'sorry no room for passengers'
-
PBY Catalina.
H8K2 would be nice, but the maintenance would be impossible.
Catalina would be cool to have...pull some Jimmy Buffet stuff :D
109K4 w/JG5 skin
-
Hellcat. Easy to take off, smooth to fly, easy to land, and just a gorgeous bird. Since I would own it, the horrible rear view would not be so bad, because no one is trying to get on my six with real guns. I Hope... :uhoh
(http://www.orgsites.com/ca/caf-socal/F6Airsho02.JPG.jpg)
-
C-47A, easier to get around with a family of six. Screw the TSA !

I want an F7F in my driveway! :rock
If I had to take the fam cross-country, gotta go with Boeing hands down. B-17.

But if I have to pick one (the first one? :D) it would be it:

Spit MkVIII, same skin we have in the game.

P-51D
Because I want enough spare parts to be available to actually fly it.

A26 Invader.

I know spitfire still has parts, and I believe F4U not 100% sure for the F4U.
C-47 definitely has parts.
Probably a few more that I don't know.

F4u4 or 5

I'd go with a Ju88

Bf109K4. I wouldn't fly it but taxi it about the neighborhood firing off a tater or two at 3:00 in the morning......

Spitfire new parts abound in England. Much like the 51 it's got a real good support system.
-
Just curious, why not the XIV?
I spent a long time researching the Spit XII and corresponding with many former pilots and ground crew. The association with those folks make the XII the Spit for me. That and I think the single stage Griffon Spit has the right combination of sleek and tough look to it. The RN version, the Seafire XV is probably even nicer looking. One just took to the air after a long restoration and is at Oshkosh for the show.
My prize aviation history bit is the logbook of a Spit XII driver who flew with both 41 and 91 squadrons, the two RAF squadrons that flew the Spit XII in combat. It would be nice to have the bird to go with that logbook :)

you know which i want :D

:aok Good on gas, for a warbird
:aok Plenty of useful load
:aok Plenty of range
:aok Plenty of room for the wife, AWAY from the cockpit
I think it's a pretty good choice.

Ki-84 for me. Real close second and third are the Ki-61 or 190D-9 :rock

109-G6 with all the weapons removed and an extra fuel tank installed internally.

Mossie!

I don't have a picture of it, but I'm sure you all have seen it, my choice would be the HE219,or the 410. :)

FW190-A8 with tanks
Kinda slow and doesn't turn so well - sorta like me in real life!!

Yea, 1946 Luscombe 8E. Was my grandfather's and now it is mine. My grandfather bought it in 1979. The plane itself came out of the Dallas factory and has been restored twice since then, with some minor restoration work done by my family. The interior has been re-done, half of the right wing has brand new metal (2002), new altimeter, new plug wires (last week). My grandfather put a Lycoming O-200 95 hp engine in the Luscombe in 1980. It has been a most dependable engine.
The plane is a delight to fly and own. It treats me well, I treat it well. 46 of my first 50 hours were spent in the Luscombe 8E (this same one) so I know the plane well. I'll say, I have seen people who have over 500 hours fly my Luscombe and have a little trouble on landing at my home field. The pattern is a .... and if you're not used to a Luscombe, it is also a .....
I recommend a Luscombe Silvaire to any and all pilots. If you happen to be looking for an antique taildragger, Fly a Luscombe!

Nice Purdue, didn't know you we a GA pilot. A very nice plane. I've got a hour or so in my neighbor's.
I get the opportunity to fly some good ones, thanks to my Dad (and Mom of course); RV-10, Glasair III, Christen Eagle II

MOSQUITO!
Two engines for safety, range to go anywhere - and fast. One of the only planes with speakers installed in the cockpit so you can enjoy some music on those long flights. Plus you have a second seat for a chick by your side.
