i opened the task mgr and looked at the processes/programs that where running on my system. in adition to the ones i recognised from win 98 i found these.
Minilog.exe
Fast.exe
Fxssvc.exe
Vsmon.exe
Svchost.exe
Spoolsv.exe
Svchost.exe local service
Svchost.exe network service
Svchost.exe system
Svchost.exe system
Lsass.exe
Services.exe
Winlogon.exe
Csrss.exe
Smss.exe
what are they, what do they do, and do i really need all this stuff running? and if not how do i turn off any unnecessary ones?

Do a internet search and download TweakXP and XPAntiSpy2.
XP is full of Microsloth spyware that reports back to MS your browsing habits and info about your PC and installed software.
My firewall was going nuts until I killed the MS spyware.
TweakXp allows you to configure the OS to your liking as well as having some nice optimizing utilitys.
