Okay, now my next upgrade is my chip, going from PIII 550 to a PIII 800 coppermine, and a friend is selling it to me for $75 bucks...I need a new MB, and am looking at this one:
ASUS CUV-4X-E
$106 on Pricewatch...comments on this MB or others?
-
Why not get a slotket adaptor to mate the flip chip to your current mobo Rip?
-
Hardware illiterate, please enlighten me...my current MB is an ABIT VA-6 socket 1.
-
"Slotket" is a adapter between FCPGA processors like most of P3s and Slot 1 mobos. Costs maybe 20$.

Thanks guys, I'll pocket that MB money for my step up to PIV next year!

Just found out that this won't work, well, it will work, but my MB still dictates the chip speed, which is limited to 733...ie it will not take advantage of the full capacity within the 800 coppermine.
-
Rip, chances are there is a BIOS update for your mobo which will allow it to recognize the faster processor. Check the manufacturers site.

Here's the BIOS update file Rip,you will also need the AWDFLASH utility from http://www.abit.com.tw/english/download/utilities/uti-03.htm (http://www.abit.com.tw/english/download/utilities/uti-03.htm)
Supports Celeron 766(66),766(66) and PIII up to 1000(133)MHz CPU

Flashing bios is easy to do but be carefull and RTFM (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
-
Update your bios and try the slocket adapter. If it doesn't work, you are only out $20.
(Oh, and BTW, don't buy a P4. That is unless you *like* tossing away more money to get a slower processor than the Athlon. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) )

Rip...I've got a slocket adapter here that you're welcome to have if ya want it. I bought it, and then decided to buy a new motherboard anyway. If you want it, email me with your address and I'll ship it off to ya.

Thks for the info Jihad, think I will try it out.Never done this before, so good time to learn...good thing I have 2 other computers for back up to post any problems I may encounter!
SOB< thks for the generous offer, I can just trot down to Infotech and get one for about 22 bucks, they're just about 10 miles from where I live, so no biggie. Thks again for the offer.

Rip-make sure you check out all the read-mes before you do it. Also, whatever you do, don't reset or turn off power while you are flashing your BIOS. You could end up with a big hunk of worthless circuits (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) If you have any questions, you can email me and I'll try to help.
