Frame 1 Background
***********
The Allied invasion of Sicily, codenamed Operation Husky,
was a major World War II campaign, in which the Allies
took Sicily from the Axis. It was a large scale
amphibious and airborne operation, followed by
six weeks of land combat. It launched the Italian Campaign.
Husky began on the night of July 9–10, 1943,
and ended August 17. Strategically, Husky achieved the
goals set out for it by Allied planners. The
Allies drove Axis air, land and naval forces
from the island; the Mediterranean's sea lanes
were opened and Italian dictator
Benito Mussolini was toppled from power.
Prepatory operations for the Husky began once the Axis
forces had been defeated in Tunisia by
the Allied strategic bomber force commenced attacking
the principal airfields of Sardinia, Sicily and
southern Italy, industrial targets in southern
Italy and the ports of Naples, Messina,
Palermo and Cagliari (in Sardinia). The attacks
were thus distributed in such a way
as to maintain uncertainty as to where the
next move of the Allied land forces would be,
in order to pin down Axis aircraft and prevent
them being ordered to Sicily.
Bombing attacks were stepped up on northern Italy
(by aircraft based in the UK) and Greece (by aircraft
based in the Middle East). From 3 July
bombing attacks increasingly focused on Sicilian
airfields and Axis communications with Italy,
although beach defences were left alone to preserve
surprise as to exactly where the landings were to
take place. By 10 July only two airfields in Sicily
remained fully serviceable and over half the Axis
aircraft had been forced to leave the island.
MTO USAAF Operations on SUNDAY, 4 JULY 1943 (INDEPENDENCE DAY)
The Ninth Air Force:
Royal Air Force (RAF) Halifax aircraft bomb the
Catania, Sicily, railroad yards during the night of 3/4 Jul.
B-25's hit the airfield at Comiso, Sicily and P-40's
escort bombers and convoy and fly sea-search for
a missing pilot.
The fighters claim 3 Bf 109's shot down and 4 P-40's
are lost.
Northwest African Air Force:
During the night of 3/4 Jul, Wellingtons hit Trapani,
Sicily and Lido di Roma, Italy. Leaflets are dropped
in the Rome, Italy area. In Sicily, B-17's and B-26's hit
the airfields at Catania and Gerbini;
B-25's bomb 2 satellite airfields near Gerbini; and
Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) A-20
and medium bombers hit airfields at Comiso, Trapani,
Sciacca, and Castelvetrano.

Hope to see you see you in Frame 2 on August 22nd when the Italian Campaign continues.
There were some excellent fights yesterday and even I managed to bag one 109G6 in my P40, a veeeery rare event :)

Icon range bit to short :joystick:
-
After all, a good battle!
We flew the 109G6 with 7 guys, 5 of them with gondolas to be sure to get the Allie buffs. To our luck the bombers came in the strait way both times which made it easy to find and kill them. But the short icon range was the fun part of it since we did not know how far the bombers were at when we started the dive...in a 109 a dive becomes a compression pretty fast, the P40´s in the back, bombers in front and only the trim to get out of it :x
We got in the P40´s game in the first run and started to turn with them, which was a bad mistake that forced us to hug the ack pretty fast and the P40´s came with us, don't know why they gave up their altitude advantage.
Second run we had more discipline and some P40 gave us a hard fight after we hit the buffs.
Now that the allies will have a Swedish guidance for the next frame we will have a hard time in stopping them. For the Icon range pls keep it like it is, its easy to use it just look around: all dots with icons are friends, all others potential bogeys!

Short icon range is good fun for fighters but in Bombers you are sitting ducks :old:
Next sec I will stay in p40 :old: :airplane:

Then again I might fly as a gunner   :old:

The icon range will be increased for frame 2. The problem of spotting enemy fighters from bombers with short icon range didn't really come to my mind before this. Always something new :)

well, living in lower saxonary, my documeted family tree starts with a swede in 1695, he was a knight under the Saxon king August the strong settled down in lower saxonary in north west germany. European influence is documented, prussians, saxons, flandern and more inside this family tree. But for a good cold Beer you can convice me to fight at your side, seems like some things doesen't change during the time

Italian campaign frame 2 is on Sunday 22nd. Start time is 3PM EST in Special Events Arena 2, no registration needed, just be there about 10-15mins early and you are good to for some of the best historical combat in the game!
Here's the setup:
Background
***********
The Allied invasion of Sicily and the whole Italian
Campaign was marked by heavy use of airpower for
interdiction missions and attacking enemy transportation
network. The allied heavy bombers flew a huge number of missions
against railroad marshalling yards throughout the whole
Italy. Some missions were flown without any opposition from
the Axis air force, but some met heavy resistance.
On the Saturday 17th July, 1943, about 80 B-24's from the
Ninth Air Force and 200+ B-25's, B-26's, and B-17's from
the NorthWest African Air Force bomb Naples, Italy,
concentrating on the marshalling yard. The B-24 mission by
the Ninth is met by fierce fighter opposition; 1 B-24 is
shot down and several are damaged; they claim 23
fighters destroyed in combat.
