Title: HO's and convergence set at 300 :)
Post by: StSanta on September 02, 2001, 06:33:00 AM
Often a disadvantage. But every now and then, one is amazed and amused of just how GOOD it can be.

Was fighting over an enemy field - loads of enemy fighters around and only me in my FW. Am on the 6 of a co alt spit. he does a split s and pulls sharply up into a HO. I roll around, get aligned and we both go for the HO (what can I say, I was bored).

Because of the g's we both had to pull, neither of us were aligned til around d300: both opened up at virtually the same time. I see his tracers whizzing by to the left and right of my cockpit: obviously his convergece is set at some point behind me. My rounds, however, all land center on target: Spit loses HO with FW190A5.

Was very surprising to see tracers flying left and right of my cockpit, yet all missing  :).

Some call it lucky.

In WarBirds 1.11 I remember setting P47 convergence to 700-800 yards.
One time I did HO P38 and oh my.. how good shots I had.
I began hitting from its nose and "slowly" (time slowed down in that awe) expanding to the wing tips..
Result was that he lost both wings and wildly smoking everything that he could  :D

Could it be that the cannons of the FW are on the line of the plane  ie the nose?  This is a big factor in HO ability.  I beleive the guns in the cowling dont have a convergence?  Or very little?  Just wondering.

<edit> IS there a cannon in the spinner of 190?

No guiness- the 190 has 2 pair of cannons on the wing.  One pair is set in the wing root, the other pair about halfway out.  The MG's are mounted on the nose.

Convergence of root cannons in Fw190 is lesser than in Spit though.

Spitfire has hispanies enough far on the wing to not shoot through the propeller.

As far as I know, the wingmounted cannons on the 190 don't shoot through the propellor.  It would have to be a helluva big prop for them to shoot through it anyway.

When I was flying back to base, and away from an enemy CV in a Zeke, 3 8" shells flew past me.  One just past my right wingtip, one just past the left, and one right over the canopy.  I sure was glad there was no convergence set on those things.
