Title: New Icon Settings
Post by: dhyran on August 11, 2010, 05:42:35 AM
would be great to have inside the blue arena different icon settings than inside the orange

orange, same as today
blue, friendly iconrange 3k, enemy 1k

having shorter ranges gives a much more intense feeling during the fights

Hey dhyran,

I don't think it could happen with the 2 arenas we have currently, primarily because the idea of the 2 arenas is to balance out the numbers between the 2 currently. By changing settings between them, they are no longer identical, and no longer "balanced".

However, if a 3rd arena was introduced with those settings, I'd be very curious as to if it'd get more or less people than the 2 "mains". (Unforutnately, my guess is less because people generally show they gravitate towards "easy")

There was a very heated argument in the FSO forum about this.

With the speed of Late War planes, 1k icon range gives no time to react, since the planes are fast and the weapon reach is long.

I worked on a flightline for over 20 years.  The distances you think are reasonable for IDing aircraft
are obscenely short when compared to real life.  HTC compensated for the lower resolution of computer
screens by adding icons.

If you don't like icons, go ahead and shut them off.  I think what you are really looking for is an added
advantage to the "sneak attack".  With the number and types of planes in the current MAs, 1000 yards is
ludicrous.

well, i love the AvA settings, but i uinderstand its not for everyone, having icon settings inbetween like the 1k on enemys makes the fights more intense, more options also for the attacked pilots, diving down, choosen the right skin brings in some more strategical thoughts. personal i love no icon settings like we have today in the AvA. unfortantly there are most times low numbers due EU times

No, some people just enjoy the no and shorter icon settings, even though it's not particularly realistic, for some, it adds  to the immersion factor and makes it a different challenge.

It's not about advantage. If it was, they would want icons off for the enemy only, not for everyone.

Not a good idea for the main arenas, even though I would personally enjoy it. For the majority of AH players, immersion is being able to identify a Spitfire from 18,000 feet away even though they could not do it in real life. It also keeps things from getting too hairy in the massive horde furballs. You won't find more than a handful of people who want icon ranges shorter than 3k (9000 feet).

At 5,280 feet (1.76 AH icon range) is it difficult but not impossible to positively identify a 45 foot long aircraft. If you have seen it close up at any time, it's easier to identify due to memory, unless 2 different aircraft with similar profiles and coloration are together, then you could get them mixed up.
