Title: Open the game
Post by: titanic3 on August 11, 2010, 10:52:35 AM
I've tried searching everywhere for a free combat flight sim, and there just isn't any (with an alive community). Aces High used to be free, why can't we bring back H2H? It was fun back then, and I would think that after all these years, the hack problems were solved instead of just putting a big band aid on it and say "Oh wells, let's just close it down". I understand $15 is not much to ask for, but for people without credit cards (teens like me, but I'm not a "squeaker", I'll say that), are finding it hard to play a game they like. Yes, I also understand that there are usually more "bad" teens and kids out there, but there are also some teens/kids that act maturely. I've heard some AH subscribers saying they also want H2H back to test maps and what not, so this would benefit everyone.

Bring back the 8 Player for free but let existing subscribers host 32 players, which free players can also join.

If anyone can find a good, alive, and fun combat flight sim out there, please let me know as well. *Combat* flight sim please, not stuff like Flightgear or YSFlight.

Free will NEVER be back. H2H will however. Teens can play the game and many do. Mom has a credit card, and for those the Mom dosen't it is easy enough to got to the bank and get a check and mail it off to HTC once a month.

I'm afraid you really don't have an argument.

You do not need a credit card to pay.  You can mail the payment by money order.  You can use a prepaid card, even a teenager can purchase one of them.  Give your parents the money and ask them to send a personal check.  There are a bunch of ways to get into the game.

From what I hear H2H is gone for good.

You guys that had free broke it, as a result it will never come back again.

User configurable arena's are on the drawing board, but you will need an AH account to access them.

Lots of ways of paying for an AH account, sit down with your folks and talk to them.
First about making the money (it won't kill you to actually work for it)
Second about setting up and managing your AH account.

Worst case scenario have them call Hitech creations and talk to Carrie.
They don't have to take your word for it.

There is a "live" flight sim on steam that you can get for $10. Lots of private hosted servers to play on with different difficulty/realism settings.

To find the servers grab hyperlobby and install it.

Otherwise if you really want to get into AH, follow the advice the others gave you.

Give Carrie a call at HTC. 6 month pre-paid subscriptions used to receive a discount...maybe they still do. A USPS money order solves the credit card problem.

Don't think Ghosth was pointing a finger directly at Titanic. His point being, HTC offered the H2H as a gratis gesture and got burned by doing so.

As you can see, you have plenty of payment options.  Open up a checking account (maybe student checking) and get a debit card, that'll work.  But, asking for it free just because you don't want to pay isn't going to fly.  :aok

the game is already free to download and play offline.  Lots of offline missions for you to pretend in also.

If H2H ever does come back it will be for subscribers only.

I do however think that it would be nice for new players to get a months worth of access to some sort of training arena or somewhere to fly with their guns disabled.  Just to get a feel of the flight model versus human opponents.

I like that. A months free access to the training arena.

But, make em pay for it. Let the Trainers setup required classes that they have to attend over the month. A University. Hitech can put in the mission counter from Tour of Duty to keep track of them. If they don't finish the course work, AUTO outta there.......It's FREE after all... :t..... It's not like they won't have the credit card account option if they dispise school....... :old:

Give the Trainers PERMO eject POWER for the weenies who would create a new account every week to game it. I know I'm only dreaming. It's only taken me 20 years of AW and AH to finaly learn there is a button to raise your gear. I thought you just waited for the loud bang, then you got faster. Landings stopped being fun though..... :headscratch: :headscratch:

I remember when Airwarrior was on AOL they had a pretty decent new player arena.
You were able to fly just like in the MA till you reached a score of something like 1,000 points.
Then you HAD to move into one of the MAs. As once you reached that score number you werent allowed back in the TA or beginner arena or whatever it was called

Wouldnt be a bad idea here for newbs. That initial learning curve wouldnt be so merciless as in the Newbie arena. Most of the people would be within a certain skill level.

Once in the MA they would still be faced with far superior pile-ots. But would at least have some experience under their belts. And not just suddenly thrown to the wolves.

It was 10,000 points and once you reached that milestone you could still fly in the newbie arena but your guns were disabled and you couldn't drop bombs either.  Basically, all you could really do is fly around in a Goon and run supplies or drunks.  You'd get the occasional vet going in the newbie arena and cleaning house but it would only be for a single sortie as it was very easy for a veteran player to amass 10,000+ points in a single sortie.

I agree.  While the training arena we have currently is an excellent venue to seek and receive training, the beauty of the newbie arena in AW is that it also prepared the new player for the dynamics of the main arenas, which is something a new player is completely unprepared for in Aces High.

ack-ack

I think this is the best suggestion to be put on these boards in a long time.   :aok

He, I was thoroughly unprepared for the MA's - didnt do me any harm tho

Like the suggestion for a newbie arena.

Paid subscription for the new 32 man rooms, good plan, h2h back, bad plan.

I remember when I first started Airwarrior I played it single player as a Kid because I had no perceived way to pay for it.  Turned out I was able to get that $15 or so a month and pay.  Been playing ever since in various forms :)  You can make it happen!

For those that stayed it obviously wasnt a deterrence. But I wonder how many come here and get totally overwhelmed with the direct injection into the MA then quickly get discouraged then leave.

My immediate reaction to the OP was that just maybe HT is turning away possible future paying customers and the future of the genre.  After all, get them interested, get them addicted, get them wanting more then drag them in is an age old marketing ploy.  That said I'm sure HT has data that says most free H2H plaers never converted otherwise, even with the problems, H2H never would have closed.

But what if they introduced a tiered structure?  1 or 2 vs. 1 or 2 room free, 8 vs 8 room $5, 8 vs 8 vs 8 room $10, full access $15 or something like that.  Then there's a plan for everyone.  It works for other entertainment venues; cable TV, Netflix, Movies (matinees vs evening rates) etc. and lets face it, in the end those are the same discretionary entertainment dollars HT is competing for.  I've been poor for a while now and these were my choices.  I lowered my cable to hold onto AH at least for now.  That might change at some point as I don't play that much anymore.

My 2 cents.

Here's another idea:  $5 WWI, $8 WWI, AVA, $10, WWI, AVA, EW, $12 WWI, AVA, EW, MW, $15 Total Access.

Maybe fill some of the lesser used arenas.

A month of AH access is what, a couple of hours' work at minimum wage? A lawn or two mowed once a month? (I have no idea what kids get paid to mow lawns these days, but that's about what it would be if you adjust what I got paid thirty years ago for inflation.) About the same as a movie with popcorn and soda? I don't see how a better entertainment value could be possible, or why a free online version of any sort is necessary.

I do like the idea of some free TA time, but I doubt many newbies would take it unless they could tack it onto the END of their two weeks. For people unacquainted with the game it takes a few brutal days in the MA to realize how badly some time in the TA is needed!

Turning customers away that do not want to pay is not bad business. :D

The model that HT had before as a gas station....

They give away 2 gallons of gas a week to whomever wants it. It gets you enough to see what it can do but you can't go far.

Next you can get as much as you want for 5 cents a gallon. You can go all you want for a really great price.

What HT and crew have done is pretty darn impressive.

Or we could just wait for Shuff to open his canopy each time, should be plenty of hot gaseous air coming out of there!  :bolt:
