Title: 19" monitor recommendations
Post by: Sancho on March 27, 2001, 01:45:00 AM
Just had a 19" Radius L-1 monitor die on me after owning for little over a year--already out of warranty.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/mad.gif)

Now I need new 19" monitor recommendations.  What do y'all recommend?

Don't feel bad Sancho

My 19" monitor just died a horrible death too. Mine was a Princeton EO90, and was a pretty decent monitor.

One Good point was that my monitor had a 3 year warranty.

The horrible point was that I had owned it 3 years and 2 months, almost exactly to the day.

Sancho, this is easy. The NEC FP-950 or NEC FP-955.

Simply outstanding monitors with the fastest vertical refresh rate on the market (the fp-950 does up to 160Hz, the fp-955 will go up to 200Hz!).

They are not cheap, but they are incredible.  Perfectly flat, which can take some getting used to after looking at fishbowl monitors, but really sweet.
They probably have the best black levels of any monitor on the market with Sony right behind them (they use the trinitron tube, but the electronics are all NEC).
For example, at 1280x1024, the ATI Radeon card used 100Hz (fp-950) for the vertical refresh, which translates to a maximum of 100 frames/second.  Most monitors, at that resolution, will only give you about 85Hz.
They have many convergence adjustments available allowing to really get the picture perfect.
I did a lot of research before deciding to plunk down the cash for this monitor, and I still cannot find a monitor that would come close to the performance of this one.
The FP-955 just came out recently, or I would have that one as it is even faster.

Darn Verm - now you've got me worried. I've got Princeton, very sweet monitor and very decently priced... Just under 3 years old...

(sorry to hear about your loss (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif))

Sancho,

Got 2 monitors and am happy with both brands. Older one is a CTX and the newer one is a Sylvania. They are both 17" and youngest is going on 2 years. Oldest is 4 years. No problems with either one ever.

I have a 19" trinitron that came with my Dell as part of the package.  Now, it's a great monitor, but one thing I really like about it is that it is black.  I didn't know how much I would like this until after I set it up.  Whatever monitor you get, you might think about it in a black body....
I have good experience with NEC's at work, though after a couple years the ones I have worked with get "patchy" for lack of a better term.  It seems that parts of the monitors show colors better than others, rather than a nice uniform picture.  The blacks are excellent, probably the best I have seen (very limited experience here).

Good luck!

Yep Greese - I have a 21" Dell Trinitron at work, and a 19" Dell Trinitron at home... they are outstanding monitors.

Have bought 4 17" CTX monitors in the last 3 years. Each is still going strong (and were dirt cheap at "Sam's Club")

I went with skuzzy's advice recently, and bought the NEC FP-950.

It's a great monitor with a great picture.

Hmm... well after this last monitor debacle, I think I need to buy the best I can afford.  After all, the monitor is the part of the computer you look at all the time... it may as well be the best part of your computer!

The NEC FP955 looks nice, and I've got a tax refund to spend...  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

You say it's got a Sony tube?  Does it have the two horizontal lines like all Trinitrons?

I've got an FP950 too, and while the picture's very good, it's going back for defects.

It does have the horizontal lines, same as all aperture grille monitors.
