Title: The War in the North
Post by: Saxman on August 15, 2010, 08:25:18 AM
Yet another new Lord of the Rings game upcoming, The War in the North:

Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Rt7A2GfDx8)

Couple thoughts:

First, it's nice to see an LotR game moving in a more mature direction. None of the books reached the level of blood, sex and gore running rampant in modern fantasy (check out the Sword of Truth series. Assuming you can get past constant social and political commentary that takes up about 75% of each of its 11 books. YES, Terry, we KNOW you don't like extremist Socialism. Do you really need to hammer that nail in with the SAME DAMN ARGUMENT for 600 pages?) but even the Hobbit had its share of mature themes.

Second, I'd like to see some actual GAMEPLAY. The closest I could find on YouTube were some screenshot montages, but no actual live gameplay. RPGs are a crowded market. Unless the gameplay stands out it just blends into the crowd, no matter what branding you slap on it.

Third, I am INCREDIBLY tired of seeing blatant "wizard" classes in LotR games (IE, the LotRO "Loremaster"). I freely admit I'm a Lore nerd, and it bugs the HELL out of me seeing overt magic in a world where magic like that wasn't actually used. Magic in Tolkien's writing was ALWAYS more subtle than that (Gandalf and Saruman never magically dueled or chucked fireballs at people in the books. Those were inventions for the movie.). This is part of what makes Middle-earth unique compared to most other high-fantasy worlds where magic is an overt and obvious force. It's not the STORY that makes it LotR, it's the world ITSELF. Regardless of what you call them (I'm looking at you, LotRO) sticking generic Warrior/Rogue/Mage classes in just isn't true to the world, and in the end all you have is a generic RPG with the Tolkien branding.

Looks ok, but I think the characters look a little cartoonish.
