Title: Sonic Booms over Puget Sound this hour
Post by: Yeager on August 17, 2010, 04:14:14 PM
Just had two very large atmospheric booms over greater Puget Sound this hour.  In the building I am at it felt like an explosion on site.  They are saying these two booms were felt from south of Olympia all the way to North Seattle.

Obama flew into town today to stump for a local senator.

There is a connection I think....

It's because when Obama puts on his cape and flys cross country he regularly breaks Mach 1.  The fighter escorts were just having a tough time keeping up.   :D

Ahh!  two F15s from Portland were scrambled up to Seattle due to a small plane breaking restricted airspace over the President.  Portland is appx 150 miles south of Seattle and F15s breaking the sound barrier are going at emergency speed Im guessing 1500 mph more or less so that means it took them 6 minutes to get up here lol

very exciting :)

In other news, a Cessna pilot needed a change of shorts.  Film at 11.

He got an outstanding up-close view of F-15's though!

Someone always fails to get the word, or in this case pilot advisory.

Hmm wonder what happens when two 1500mph f-15s fly by a Cessna at close proximity?

the Cessna pilot has to pay to have the pucker mark taken out of the seat?

He left LA and my neighborhood this morning from doing a stump and dinner stop last night, and dont get me started on the traffic I had to go through to get home.  Bush didn't even get whole chunks of Wilshire, Sepulveda, and Olympic shut down at the same time from 4pm-9pm on a monday!

I don't blame the Cesna driver, we ourselves didn't have any headsup to Obama's local stop until he landed at LAX.  F-15s make a helluva lot of noise though, even going sub-sonic, probabley scared all the fluids out the poor guy.

Everyone here in the office felt the two booms. Sounded like they were coming from the roof.

Earlier, I saw Air Force One landing at Boeing Field from my desk at work.

Hehe yea I heard that when I was at Fort Lewis. I though it was control Det or ceremony howitzer going off, then later on I realized it was 2 sonic booms. It was bad bellybutton =)

Which was bigger...the pucker from the sonic booms, or the realization to said cessna pilot that 2 f-15s had tone on him....... :confused:

I remember when sonic booms were heard all the damn time around my parents house down in central Alabama. The USN and USAF used to fly training missions low level and on AB all the time through the area. Talk about rattling grandmoms china cabinet when those big bellybutton Phantoms would come screaming through the valley and about 5 seconds later the sound would come following them through.

Used to watch mock dogfights over head all the time as well. We regularly had tankers and fighters hooking up in the area too. You could watch the whole process with binoculars when they flew the race track pattern up about 25k. Then the tanker would head out west and the mock dogfights would start again. Phantoms, A-7 Corsairs and Tomcats tangling it up big time...man it was sweet!

I hate posts like this.  Either tell him he's wrong, or tell him he's right but almost wrong.  And then post your proof.  But don't start the "I'm a bigger aircraft nerd than you" fight.

not intended for that.

i used to think that too, till i saw them fly at mcguire. i thought there was no way something that big or that heavy could turn tightly at all.

 then the solo f15 fly. he did a max performance turn at "center stage" that would make a spitfire pile-it jealous.  :aok

It is interesting to note that the F15s were 150 miles away at the very moment they were needed.
Personally I see this as a HUGE weakness for CiC security.

They had better shore this up quickly before some enterprising haji suicider gets a rapid pipper on the CiC.

Though the FAA says the impact on private aviation is intended to be minimal, the list of aviation activities that are "not authorized" within the TFR includes:

    * Flight Training
    * Practice Instrument Approaches
    * Aerobatic Flight
    * Glider Operations
    * Seaplane Operations
    * Parachute Operations
    * Ultralight Flight
    * Hang Gliding
    * Balloon Operations
    * Agriculture/Crop Dusting
    * Animal Population Control Flight Operations
    * Banner Towing Operations
    * Sightseeing Operations
    * Maintenance Test Flights
    * Model Aircraft Operations
    * Model Rocketry

    * UAS Operations

Are you serious?????

I've got a model rocket that requires clearance to fly.  This really doesn't surprise me all that much.

The same world where it takes 20mm Hispano fire and loses a flap?

Hard-fact turn performance data for the F-15 is a little sparse to the public, especialy on the current stock in service.  Taking into consideration we don't know the exact cessna model in question here but will assume it's one of the more common varieties with at least half a tank of gas.  We also don't know the ordnance and fuel loadouts of the F-15s when directed to the intercept, but given they were cleared to break any window necessary between portland and seattle to get there ASAP they probabley could of dropped any extra weight and tanks along the way that they deemed necessary for speed and performance.

Assuming this cessna was not some high-performance-light-weight-supercharged model and just your typical tail dragger putting along with a healthy reserve of fuel and a picnic basket in the back seat, and assuming the intercepting F-15s were somewhere between the minimum and 50% maximum gross weight, the cessna is way outa his league on this one.

Not to mention, you know, unless he has a minigun in said picnic basket, he's at a slight firepower disadvantage.

We get the occasional hot shot from Luke AFB here. Last one I heard was the worst. Shook the house and buckled my bedroom window.

Plenty of empty land close by so while I think it's a cool thing to experience, I'm also wondering why the hell they're breaking the law...

They aren't breaking the law; just merely reminding you citizens in the area that they are still there.

Lol, I heard some of my southern mates on Teamspeak talking about this.

I thought that the Cessna pilot would be like "oooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiitttttttttt" his seat would be brown. I could just hear the Cops theme playing in my head imagining the F-15s forming up on him.
