I have a feeling those days in iraq may be over for good.

Popcorn....you think you are going to have that long to pop it? Just better hope that the boys in our camo who are still going to be there have enough ammo and vehicles to put up a fight with after they get through sending it all back to Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Guys, there are still 50,000+ troops in Iraq.

It's all a name game. My son-in-law's Brigade just arrived there in late July. Within a week, he had earned another combat patch for engaging in a fire fight with insurgents. His MRAP came under fire from a building while on patrol and they returned fire, dispatching two bad guys to enjoy their virgins.

Patch ceremony...

His Brigade is listed as a support unit. He's a member of 2-11th Field Artillery Regiment. They left their artillery in Hawaii. Unlike the unit that just departed, they are not equipped with Strikers. However, that doesn't mean that they are not in danger or not involved in combat.

Well, i think most of us knew what may happen once we start leaving Iraq.  Still not sure if the Iraq Government can stand alone.    :salute To all the men and women who fought in Iraq.

Just wanting to and actually doing it can change you who personality.  If he is in Iraq or Afghanistan, give him a  :salute for me.  I tried to enlist after college in the Army and Air Force but they turn me down.  I have hepatitis C.

oh he completed his tour a while back ago and has returned safely, i didnt know em before he went so i couldnt say if hes changed or not. He tells me meanwhile he is proud to be a marine he feels all he got out of it is a bunch of head problems. I didnt bother to pry an ask if he ever did it though as it is a real awkward topic to bring up.

Before long, Iran is going to invade Iraq, there is no doubts there.

Why is that relevant to the U.S.?

timetables for withdrawl from both iraq and afghanistan in place, so I guess that means the coalitions have succeeded in bringing stability and democracy to the region and an end to alqaeda and the terrorist threat. and all it cost was 100s of thousands of deaths and 100s of billions of $!

I think we all deserve a pat on the back :aok

those people have been fighting for thousands of years. they were fighting before we ever got involved, and they'll be fighting when we get out.

Seems odd that we would leave now before the Iran nuke issue is resolved. Perhaps our government thinks it will use Iraq to invade Iran.

The "mission" has changed from one based on combat to one based on support of indigenous forces. There are still many combat arms troops there and more are on the way. The 3rd ACR (from Ft. Hood IIRC) is prepping to deploy now. They are certainly a "combat" unit. Don't let semantics lead you to a different conclusion.

the last combat brigade left Iraq(4SBCT-2ID) the remaining 50,000 troops are in a support role. Only SF units will continue to do combat ops

Iraq-was-never-about-terrorism. Afghanistan yes, Iraq not so much.

As long as there is oil in the middle east we will be there; They'll hate us for being there, retaliate, and we'll justify sending more troops over.

The Iran Nuke issue wasn't an issue when Iraq was the regional power and Iran thought Iraq had the potential to have Nukes. I'm not saying I wish Saddam were still in power, but just stating we create our own problems.

My squadron will still be deploying a few people per year to Iraq, as flight instructors for the new Iraqi Air Force.  They're flying T-6s and are planning on having a fighter lead-in program right there in Iraq so they don't have to rely on training in other countries.  We have some guys there now, and if I interpreted a rather vague email correctly yesterday, they are getting shot at now that they are one of the few remaining US units in Iraq.

"support" still means "carry guns and repel attacks that keep coming".

For the guys in my squadron currently deployed in Iraq, it means "try to train Iraqi student pilots to fly the T-6 without letting either the students or insurgents kill you".  I think they are logging combat time every sortie...

wojo, there are only  seven stryker brigades currently in the army(6 active duty and 1 national guard) . 4th SBCT2ID just left Iraq, (as my brigade just cameback from the 'Stan.) I am prolly going overboard but there are 3 Stryker Brigade Combat Teams(SBCT) at JBLM, 1 in Hawaii, 1 in Alaska  and 1 in Germany and the Pennsylvania National Guard(28th ID/56th SBCT). oh yeah, I was just saying that Combat troops are out leaving support troops who still carry m4's and may well still be engaged i was not inferring anything else. :salute
