I went out and bought 3 fans. One to draw air in..bottom. One in rear to remove air..upper rear that is. I even bought a "slot" fan to remove some heat. The new CPU fan is a Thermaltake Chrome Orb and I see no real difference in heat. The probe tell me temps from 60C to 67C depending if case on/off.
What's wrong? I know the ASUS prob is suppose to be crap but man... that sure seems hot. The Heatsink doesnt scald my hand...just warm.

did u use thermal paste between the HS and CPU? if not do so, dont use the little
pad they have sometimes. 60 to 70 degress C is waaaaaaaay hot. my P3 650 OCed to 866 only gets 30 C at most and im using it in
a desktop case. also make sure u have the
HD/CDrom/Floppy cables tucked away so air flow inside the case is not restricted.
try to have air flow in from opposite corner
of powr supply, and out near PS so u dont
draw heat from ur PS into CPU area.

Yea... used the thermal paste. Thin layer painted over chip.

Read a review somewhere rating orbs pretty useless as far as the cooling go...

S!
The Chrome Orb is crap.Just buy an Alpha FOP38,even the FOP32 is better.I had Orb's and now they serve as paperweight.

I ordered a Global Win CAK38. Its got the all copper heatsink and a kick bellybutton fan. I'm gonna put the factory HS back on till I get my new one.
I read a modification to do in order to get the thermistor to read correct temps on a socket A as well.
It can be found at http://www.overclockers.com/tips443 (http://www.overclockers.com/tips443)

60C is WAY too hot. In Win2k after running AH for a long time MB5 gives me a CPU reading of 42 C.

Yea, was told and have read that the 1+ gig chips run hotter anyway PLUS the thermistor is located uner the chip in the mold and doesnt make good contact w/the chip anyway.
Thus the readings tend to be abit off.
I ordered the fan mainly now because my damn PC room is hot anyway in summer and the case will make it worse... many fans or not. Hopefully what I ordered will make a marked improvement.
Last night the OLD/Orig fan-heatsink ran at 60-61c study in AH,SUPPOSDLY this is actualy 50-51 which is well within spec I think. The max temp for the chip is 95c(failure/fry).

Batdog,
I just installed that fan on my 1.2 gig Tbird.
You will love it...I gained 12 degrees Celsius in cooling.

Cool! That'll put my chip in the 40's!

Oh..forgot to mention....wipe off that gooo crap they ship with the heat sink and order some Arctic II thermal compound and use that instead. You will be happy you did.
