I was sitting here with my son watching cartoons this morning and a thought struck me. WTF HAPPENED! We have Darthvader type guys instead of that space guy from BugsBunny! We have crap like South Park and Family Guy, yet they have banned PorkiePig,FogHorn Leghorn, and Yosemite Sam. :furious Where is the outrage?!
I was going to get a Yosemite Sam tattoo when I was younger....I may do it now. Right on my forearm with a him holding a SAW wearing confederate grays and saying "screw off". Now I know we have some good artists in here, so I'm wondering if someone could draw a picture like what I described? About 3"x4" or so. I'd like take it to the tattoo guy here in town have have it put on if it looks good enough.
-
The bugs bunny roadrunner hour :)
-
:rofl
Where is the outrage about cartoons today, oh and can someone draw Yosemite Sam with a giant bellybutton machine gun.
-
No kidding. Cartoons can be crude and foul-mouthed today, but god forbid Wile E. Coyote blows himself up trying to catch that Roadrunner.
-
Because every crybaby and sissy threw a tantrum over every single classic catroon because it offended them somehow
-
pm "INK" He does some great work :aok ck out his web site http://www.fieldsofink.com/

We're talking about two very different genres of cartoons here. Family guy cannot be compared to Wiley Coyote.

you are very right. family guy sucks........the old loony toons don't. :aok

well, admittedly, there is a lot of "stereotypes" in the old loony toons and meri melodies. but in all honesty, that is no reason for them to have gone away either.
they were drawn in the 40's 50's and i think into the 60's. they are still better than 99.99999% of the crap that's out there today.
my neice watches dora the explorer......what a frigging ANNOYING frelling show!!
-
thankfully, i have about a dozen vhs tapes with nearly all of the good cartoons on them. :D

South park and family guy aren't meant to be shown to children. That's why they are rated PG-13 and M and why they are usually on late at night and not Saturday mornings like the other cartoons you mentioned. To even try to compare them to one another is just silly.

i like southpark, 'cause they push limits....although i lost any respect i might've had for the writers when they buckled under and wouldn't show mohomad.
the closest to matching the old loony toons, was(in my opinion) pinky and the brain.
-
I know what I'm asking for Xmas this year. My soon to be 9 year old kid will laugh his arse off too. He loves Tom & Jerry and his giggle and laugh bring a smile to my face like nothing else.
South Park hasn't been relevant to me in over 6 years.
CAP and other Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies holdouts, here is the Holy Grail: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Looney+Tunes+Golden+Collection&x=18&y=16&ih=2_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_1.55_693&fsc=-1 (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Looney+Tunes+Golden+Collection&x=18&y=16&ih=2_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_1.55_693&fsc=-1)

I believe that was the decision of Comedy Central, not the creators of South Park.

At yet they started playing them in the morning for kids to watch.
-

i know. they were used as moral boosters during the war originally.
i wish they'd bring them back. they're funny, and they actually took some talent for the people to draw them.
-
I understand what you're saying Larry but what I don't understand is why are the old looney tunes banned and stuff like South Park are not. It's just insane. A South park character can stick his finger in his butt and give the kid sitting next to him a "Hitler", yet FogHorn can't call a chicken hawk "boy" or Yosemite can't carry a rebel flag?!
I've even heard rumors of The Three Stooges being banned for violent content. I don't know who makes these rules up but they are in need of a clue.
-
IMO, I see a distinction between old racist or sexist ideas (as subtle as they may be) on a kids show and potty humor on an adult TV show.
-

it's only racist if someone decides to take offense to it.
sexist? bugs bunny in a dress is sexist? :rofl
-
Everytime I get to see a WIley/Roadrunner cartoon I laugh uncontrollably when Wiley falls off the cliff. It's not him falling that gets me. It's the squeal of his fall...silence....poof! Bugs Bunny also had the best background music. How else would a kid learn to appreciate classical music.
-
Don't get me wrong, I love the old cartoons. I'm just old enough to remember watching them on Saturday morning cartoons (re-runs then though).
My point is that Family Guys is as much a kids show as something you'd find on Skinimax at one in the morning.
Apples and Oranges IMO.
-
Bugs Bunny was "Sexist"? Come on, gimme a flippin' break. They're cartoons that made you laugh until your sides hurt. Tom & Jerry, Woody Wooddonut, Chilly Willy, Foghorn Leghorn lifting that dogs tail and paddling it with a 2x4, Yosemite Sam taking 100's of cannons to the face, Beaky Buzzard saying "No, no, no, no". The Roadrunner staying suspended in the air as a chunk of the ledge broke making Wiley fall. The list goes on.
It was funny, well written Humor that will NEVER be duplicated. South Park is now worn out, King of the Hill never panned out and that is why Beavis & Butthead is making a return.
But give me those old cartoons over the commercialized crap today.

yes, but 2 wrongs don't make a right. Besides I watched these shows when I was a kid. My family on my dads side was extremey racist, but I am not. I don't teach my boys that. I teach them to respect men for who they are and use good manners. I think these old cartoons are fun and honest entertainment.
But what I don't want as a father, is having my kids subjected to sex and bad laugage everytime I turn around. But people have no problem throwing "oh it's racist" around. You ever watch shows like Martin Lawerence, Steve Harvey or even MidNight at the Apollo?!
Don't give me that crap. We a folks of color in high ranking positions in our government. I don't think Foghorn, Twitty or Speedy will turn us against each other.
I know it's probably a silly thing to argue about so lets keep this civil. You're entitled to you're opinion. But what I'd really like to understand is why LoonyTunes is banned and shows like Southpark and AdultSwim or Family Guy are not. What's good for the goose ought to work for the gander too.

Watch an episode of "The Boondocks".

You have any idea how hard I had to work to get a glimpse of Playboy when I was a kid? Now my kids can just tune to Nick at Night for a booty call. :furious
-
I mentioned the distinction between the racists argument and what the target market of South Park is. I was not trying to imply that I find the shows racist, my mistake for the misunderstanding. However, I can understand how people might see something like that in the older shows, considering the time they were written in. Do I think that means they should be "banned", not at all, they're hilarious. I'm just confused about the "banned" that keeps getting thrown around, where have these been banned? Family Guy has been "banned" from many homes because of what many people find appropriate.
People still watch Looney Toons, and people don't watch Family Guy. Did I miss something about a cartoon ban?
-
I do have some banned Loonytunes made back during WW2 that I agree with the ban as they are offensive. I say they are banned because I can only find them under "banned cartoons". Been looking for a copy of Fritz the Cat. :uhoh
-
I think I came across a torrent for that one somewhere, if I find it again I'll post a link.
-
I think there were only a couple episodes banned due to negative stereotypical African-American scenes. The rest are out there and available.
-
Looney Tunes was the best. Offends people today? I say dont be so easily offended!

You've got to understand that times have changed since you and I were kids. Same goes with many other things. When I was a kid I got a pellet gun when I was four, a .22LR when I was five, and a .410 when I was six. I'm sure most of us on here went deer/duck hunting with our fathers before we were eight or ten. No a days most people look at you crazy or think you're a bad parent if you let your kids do half the stuff we did as children. To put it simple people these days are pansies and don't want their kids watching anything but Hannah Montana or Justin Beber crap.
-
Do a search for Yosemite Sam Mahatma Gandhi (bigot and a 'race purist') or Bugs Bunny Witch ("Bewitched Bunny") or Bugs Bunny Dixie (rebel flag) or Bugs Bunny black face... you get the point.
-
Saturday mornings suck for kids any more. If there is a cartoon on its all about teaching them some value, or life lesson they will forget 1 min after watching. Saturday mornings used to be fun for kids. Bugs, Roadrunner, Dick Dastardly..
-

-
Voss, do you think Dodgeball or Musical Chairs should be Banned?
as much as i hate to say this, some schools here in the PRNJ HAVE banned dodgeball.
still, i'd bet that should some channel choose to start showing loony toons, merry melodies, and all those old cartoons.......they'd find them to be fairly popular, even with todays kids.....as long as the parents let em watch.

and those were friggen funny

I grew up on Loony Toons... I used to run home after school, grab a giant carrot and eat it while watching Bugs Bunny.
When I watch them now, and they edit them it pisses me off to no end. I'm sorry, but when Daffy shoots himself in the head, I want to see it. When I was a kid, I could tell that cartoons and real life were very different from each other, and never once did I get the urge to harm myself from watching loony toons.
Granted... some of the stuff from the 40's was racist as hell. But it was a different time. You can still buy those episodes, but I don't mind them not being broadcasted.
But buy God, give me the rest of them! I loves me some LT!
-

No "VOSS" I think you should be banned. No one that stupid should be allowed to hang out with children. :devil
-

Yes they were but the "point is" the lawsuits about rebel flags and witches portrayed as ugly (not all people of the wicken faith are ugly they claim) and so on. Its not about people insisting the cartoons be removed its about the television stations caving in to fear of being sued.
Watch the movie "Unthinkable" and maybe you can find a clue in there as to where things went wrong.

things went wrong when lawyers started getting enough power to sue someone for just looking at someone else wrong.
sheesh.......

Ah yes the good ole days of cartoons are long gone. Its a shame. I still like watching looney toons on YouTube lol

No, but kids anymore want to see the "extreme stuff". Why watch Wiley Coyote strap a rocket on and smash into a wall when they can fire up the ol' Xbox and beat a hooker with a bat? It's ridiculous. Realistically, it's not the kids... It's the parents.

In the same vein;
I got a 3 Stooges DVD with about 5 episodes on it and started watching it - you know the deal - they were taking to each other with hammers, someone gets his eyes poked out - pies and paint everywhere - I become hysterical.
My 2 teenagers walk in - look at me - look at what I'm watching and then decide;
1) It's cruel.
2) It's not funny.
3) I may need to see someone for laughing at this.
We truly are on the road to mediocrity and oblivion

The concept of humor has evolved. Your teenagers may prefer the sarcastic humor of Family Guy over the very obvious humor of the Stooges. Nothing wrong with that. I certainly wouldn't call that a step towards mediocrity, it's just a matter of taste (which is molded by culture).
One thing I see a lot of in this thread are people with rose tinted glasses. I'm the same way. I see the children's cartoons of today and I don't get it. All I can remember is laughing my bellybutton off at Doug, Rugrats, Pinky and the Brain, Aahh Real Monsters, and very early in life -Tom and Jerry. That doesn't necessarily mean that today's cartoons are bad, it just means that I don't get them because I'm not a youngin' anymore and all I can remember is the good parts of the cartoons that I enjoyed.
Btw, stuff like Family Guy, King of the Hill, and Southpark cannot be compared to children's cartoons. Because they aren't children's cartoons. Just because cartoons were exclusively for children when you were a kid doesn't mean it is the same nowadays. I grew up with the Simpsons so for me mature cartoons have always been around. And yes, when I was young watching the Simpsons as a kid was frowned upon. Just like a child watching Family Guy should be, only it usually isn't.
-
My wife is sending my niece all this DORA crap - I want to strangle her. Instead I found a Pinky & the Brain DVD iso and sent that over.
So far as cartoons that are decent from back in the day - I have yet to find a true cell animation that deals with issues like Racism, War, Loss better then Exosquad. Hell I still watch it today and my wife sat through it - for the full 8 hours on a rainy sunday. Another guy wrote "There is no good or bad in this show-there are just sides. If you don't like to have your opinions questioned or are adverse to a little soul-searching, don't try it. But if you would like to see a real depiction of war and the impact it has on people's lives, these are videos you should try"

I have a hard time watching cartoons today. Content is crap. Animation is crap. The message to the kids is crap or non existent.
-
Couple guys have nailed it already. People don't want to take responsibility for the actions of their children anymore. Somewhere along the line it became the norm or commonplace to say that the television they were watching was too violent and giving them bad ideas. Wrong. When a child has bad behavior or racist ideas or is sexist, it's because you didn't do your job as a parent. Plain and simple. I watched all the old cartoons, and I was never a bad child. I'm not sexist, I'm not racist, and I knew the difference between cartoons and real life. Problem is, the TV companies were having all kinds of problems with the group of people who decided this was bad TV, so they just stopped airing the cartoons.
As far as new cartoons go, my children won't be watching that stupid crap. My children will learn important life lessons from me, not some stupid cartoon. As far as my own enjoyment, I've bought some of the old cartoons on DVD and watch them from time to time, and they are as funny now as they were 25 years ago when I started watching them.
-
I have thought about writing a book titled Rd.Runnr. Based loosely on the guy who put a JATO on his Volvo. Rd.Runnr would be the guys custom license plates number.
-
I think it's hard for anyone to argue that some shows (cartoons or anything else) from decades ago, had scenes or ideas that we would consider racist by today's standards. I don't think that means they should be thrown out completely, but they have to be watched with a knowledge of the context they were written in. Impressionable kids might not understand that concept like their parents, and parents shouldn't assume that they will. As a parent, one would have to make the choice whether to censor certain content or try to explain the context to them, and hope they don't pick up some aspect you might consider negative. This could apply to most anything, many parents choose to censor violence, sex, or language from their children until they feel they're ready to see it.
-
Honestly, the Looney Tunes cartoons were not originally meant for child consumption. They were shown back when you walked into a theater and just watched whatever happened to be running at the moment. I think it's a shame, however, that they're harder to find on TV, even on the so-called Cartoon Network.
The last really great "for kids but really for adults too" cartoons were "Animaniacs", of which "Pinky and the Brain" was a spin-off.
Witness this magnificent re-tooling of a classic Abbot and Costello bit:

I remember watching the above in the cardio room of my gym. Those of us who were tuned to that channel were falling off our stairmasters. Literally.
Or this musical geography lesson (slightly inaccurate, but still fun!)

Of course modern cartoons have also had their high points. When they're at their best, Family Guy and South Park do amazing social commentary. And of course there's always the Simpsons.
But we are ignoring the renaissance of the super-hero animated series that began with Batman: The Animated Series and ran all the way to Justice League Unlimited. Along with the anime-inspired Teen Titans, these series were unmatched in their ability to translate the modern comic book into a television series.
