Title: Maximum File Sizes for MA Terrains
Post by: MachNix on August 22, 2010, 03:02:51 PM
Has there been any standard set for the maximum size of a MA terrain's res file?

The file size increase when using detailed shorelines with varying water depths.  I'm finishing up an update to the Tagma terrain and the file size has gone from about 5.0 MB to 10.8 MB.  Being on dial-up myself, I'm interested in keeping the file size as small as possible but don't want to overly limit myself in the design of the terrain.  So, is there a maximum file size a res file can have and still be suitable for MA use?

I was concerned about this myself a year or so back for pretty much the same reasons. No one here seemed to know so I asked Skuzzy. He said it depended on the terrain and that they already had one that was 6mb in size. So I guess you are safe up to that size and anything more comes with an increasing risk of rejection.

BTW, awesome looking terrain.

It's 2010 baby!  A 15 Mb terrain is nothing if you look at any other game.  People will not mind a 10-15mb one-time download to fly on a terrain like the one pictured.  Great work Mach. :salute

It would be nice to know for certain though. There's always that nagging doubt in the back of your mind as you work on an MA terrain: "Will they allow this or am I wasting my time?"

After a long battle with photoshop and shorelines, I'm in the process of detailing a new terrain.

I do not use any custom textures/tiles for the terrain.

With that said and the terrain about 75% detailed, the file is already at 4mb with no bases placed on the terrain yet. Once the terrain is completely detailed and the bases and strat are placed on the terrain I would expect it to be over 6mb.

So, a 10mb terrain file isn't really that far fetched.
