The following link takes you to a website where you can play a noise that only the "young" can hear.
Apparently people older than 25 can't hear this noise.
I have seen this on the news and was always curious about it. I saw some report where they pipe this noise over speakers to discourage teens from loitering.
Thing is i'm pushing 40 now and I can still hear it.
Can y'all?
(say if you over/under 25)
Link (http://theoatmeal.com/quizzes/sound/)
(edit: was googlin' this and found an interesting article where Teens are using this tone as a Ringtone for their cellphones because adults can't hear it. They can be in class and get a phone call and the teacher can't hear their cellphone ringing. Clever. Link to Story about it (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5434687)

Oh wow. Loud and clear.
Sounds like the same pitch that is used in my mother's "Bark Off" device. Gives me a headache.
Under 25.
Edit. Yeah, totally have a headache now.

Heard just fine. Had to lower the volume too. Got dog whistle ears.

I think the whole age threshold thing is a bit arbitrary.
Some people have more range in their hearing than others, just like some people have more taste buds than others, or better vision.
Obviously your hearing degrades over time, but it's not going to be black and white. Everybody's different.
-
52 and heard it.
I think it sounds like 800nate.
-
Tried this about a year ago. Even though I am in my mid forties, I heard it fine, actually to fine, as my daughter had it turned up and I have suffered some pain in one ear ever since.
-
I heard it, I'm 36.

There are different ones, different levels.

The sound of the one in the OP website sounds like the one that is about 49 years or so.
I can hear them all, barely the first one, but I can hear it.
-
This sound frequency peaks just at 15Khz and there is a very slight harmonic at 9KHz, 3KHz. You need to have a pretty heavy internal ear damage to not hear this one if you aint too old. My father is limited to 14Khz (He is 65) and can't hear the crickets at night and some birds.
And of course... while I was typing, some guy posts a nice little link with a whole bunch of sounds with frequency labeling :(
-
"Some guy" says "you're welcome." :t
-
I have one on my cell phone that I've never found an adult that could hear it. I'll see if i can get it posted on here and see what its like for ya'll.
-
34, i can hear it and vary unconformable to my ears.
-
50 and i heard it, very annoying

I can hear the 17.4 and up. Guess I'm not 24 anymore. All that damn heavy metal music that my parents warned me about. :rock
-
I have this on my phone. An interesting experiment to play is to play it in a crowded restaraunt. It's hilarious to watch all the kids poke theirs heads up and look around while the audults keep on eating.

17.4 was the only one I couldn't hear.
I can hear all the ones above and below.
-
"Jesus Christ!" was my reaction, of course I forgot my volume was turned up so loud. Under 25.
The 25 is just a generalization, different frequencies will vary for different people. I seem to be particularly tuned to the frequency from a television, I can tell when one is turned on or off with my back turned or from a different room. I remember back in elementary school, when returning to the classroom, we'd be walking down the hall and as soon as I passed the point where the wall to my classroom would be, I could tell if we got to watch a video that day!

me-39-cant hear it.
wife-39-heard it
son-16-heard it
NOT

37 and I can hear it.

Id be interested to hear it.
For the test... used the same audio setting on all clips
8-16K heard fine
17-20K could tell something was there, made my hearing senses tingle. Max out volume and then I could hear it.
21-22 heard but was lower pitch
-
54 - heard it
I have dang near perfect pitch so I hear most sounds no problem for some reason
-
They have this sound outside one of the local grocery stores to keep kids from loitering.
I do not understand why anyone would use this as a ringtone to avoid teachers from hearing it... Just set your rington to vibrate and you will be the only one to notice
-
43 and heard it loud clear and annoying. 800Nate has nothing on that sound.

Ha, i have to disagree with that, vibrate on many phones is so aggressive it can be just as noticeable as a full ring, worse yet everyone might start looking around trying to figure out what that humming is.

37 and heard it.

I initially had a hard time hearing it..because I'm so old..my eyes had a hard time reading the initial post.
kidding..I hear it loud and clear..and oddly enough..it's almost the same tone as the chronic ringing in my years that I've had all my life.
Q..how many of us here, thought that when we clicked on the link..it was a gag..and it was going to be LOUD AS HELL?
