Title: Oh no not again ("Search is your friend"): Damaged Ships Should Smoke
Post by: oneway on August 23, 2010, 06:05:14 PM
I know about the search function...

 :aok

Here goes anyway:

I wish that damaged carriers, cruisers and destroyers would have some form of visible hull (structure object) damage other than guns down....or the burning radar

It could be anything such as smoke, fire, list, oil slick....anything...and lets say it gets triggered when the hull is down 50%

The burning radar on a carrier indicates simply the radar object on the ship has been destroyed...and is not an indication of relative ship strength.

Predators always seek out the weak, wounded and easy kills and pilots would do the same...

In the present scenario we are running, there is no practical method to tulips the health of a ship. A ship might be full up 100% or 99.9% down and only a single 50 cal round would finish it off...when you go for a run on ships you end having to assume the ship is full up and drop a full packet of ordinance on it...that bites...

Show me the cripples so I don't have to waste calories chasing down my dinner...

How about a bright red icon with a damage percentage and the remaining ordnance required to kill the ship?

And maybe some PowerUP rings we can fly through on our way to rescuing the Princess.

WTG everyone for ruining a legitimate post, you should be real proud of yourselves for adding so much to this forum.

Oneway, I think it is a good idea, after all Warbirds has had this functionality in it for over four years!

I would like to see decks with holes from the bombs going through the deck to the sub-structures, maybe tilting superstructures from damage too?

OK flame away :rofl :rofl

Good thing this is Aces High II then, or there would be a massive snafu in the game atm.

EDIT: Clarifying

pshh.  Give me the blue shell any day of the week.  It's the ultimate ankle humper, in a sense.

Anyway, I like the idea.  Some chunks falling off the flight deck would be a nice touch.

Koopa Road in Mario 64.  :x

Now about battle damage showing on the ships and oil slicks...  +1.  The listing of the CA and DD's, could be done easy vs the listing on the CV.  You don't launch or land planes on a listing CV.  Holes in the deck of the ships would also be nice, but you'll find it hard to launch and land with holes in the way. :lol  For the CA and DD's, Listing would take place when you get a bomb hitting JUST next to the ship and/or if it get's hit by a torpedo.  The hole in the hull/deck would show with a torpedo impact or a bomb hit.  Something along those lines?

The CV will be a doozy.  The hole in it's hull/deck won't be too much of a problem.  Example: At 1K, you see a hole. At 2k, you see two, etc, etc.  At 4k you start to see smoke and at 6-7k, you will see the fire.  Listing issue though, may get a lot of flak if they decided to go with that on the CV.  Primarily because you'll have those people who don't pay attention and up only to watch their planes slide over the side and/or hit the tower on takeoff.  If they decide to prevent the list from affecting the orientation of your plane when you take off, they would have to reprogram the CV so that your plane won't hit the tower when she's listing.  Listing on the CV sounds like a coding NIGHTMARE.  Maybe if she's hit to where she'll list, you can't up from then CV for X amount of minutes?  (Counter flooding and what-not to lever her off)  You won't have to worry about the listing when it comes to the guns.  It's like being up on some of these steep hills in a tank.  Just got to adjust your aim accordingly.

Which brings up a question, as they take damage, would their speed decrease?  I didn't see you mention whether the damage would affect the ship's speed or not.  If the ships list, their speed is affected.

Of it all, I think the oil slick would probably be the easiest to code in and implement.

Another question is, why limit to just the ships?  We could do this with hangers too.  Maybe have the hanger showing a few holes in it and/or some smoke.  Example: At 1K damage, the Hanger shows a hole/s in the roof.  At 2k damage, you have the hole/s and some smoke.

at 5.5 altitude in my b26's, its hard to see the holes on deck of the cv with all the water on top of it  :devil.  remember if there's holes on the deck, airplanes cant take off. as for oil slicks, come on guys, why not just have oil slicks where the planes hit the water too.  there's some thing, that would be nice to have, but sometimes, it is not worth it.  at what altitude do you think the oil slick will be hard to see.

you want to find cv's really easy, look for the dorks in the big guns shooting at the base.  that's the cv ded giveaway.  if they would only understand that it should only be done when there's no defenders.  otherwise, it is like a big circle on the cv that says "cv is here".  I used to have one hell of a time finding cv's now, thanks to the gunners, i can see it where it is just based on where the tracers are.

I don't think having oil spill into the AH environment is healthy.  Next you'll want global warming added and other make believe stuff.... :headscratch: :old: :headscratch:

back to what the OP was about.

I think ships should have somekind of way to tell us if they are damaged. Say flames out at 25% hull? I would like smoke but my frame rates wouldn't.  :bolt:
