Title: Custom plane skins
Post by: sandwich on August 26, 2010, 05:34:19 PM
I think it would be pretty damn awesome if we could make custom skins for our planes, and it wouldnt need to be historically accurate or any such thing like that.

There would be the downloaded skins, which everybody that has the downloaded historical skins would see on your plane.

And then there would be the custom skins, which nobody else would see on your plane but you, and maybe, the people that downloaded your custom skin if you share it with the community.

Anyone viewing you with your custom skin would just see the default skin on your plane.

No.

by the way, you can create a custome skin like you want and use it but it will only be visible to you when you play and not anyone else.

Online too?

Not really sure but I think I recall HiTech saying when we got the skins that you could do it but it would only be visible on your front end not the other players.

So saying that i could replace the .res file of say, P51D_1 with my own skin? It will show as mine custom on my computer, and the default on others  :headscratch:

Might be a good question to call and ask HTC about.  If you make a custom skin that works and run it while you're playing the does it show up in films?  I can see the skinners and film makers starting a 'black' market and maybe getting some return for the time that they put in.

Eh I already see how this could be a bad thing. Someone would find a way to make a transparent skin so they could see better.

I remember making one on one of the older styled planes where you could 'block out' a certain color with a text file. I painted everything the same color and then blocked it out. From the out side the plane was almost totally transparent except for the prop and some other minor parts. It was to funny.

As for the OP I remember way back when only you could see your custom skins in the TA but no one else could.

Probably the easiest and most oft used method of providing maximum customability for avatars (which relates directly to our skins) is the provision of multiple options in various details, the squad logo is an example of this so we already know it's possible in AH. There could be multiple choices in colour/texture (e.g) for individual parts of each a/c like the fin, rudder, elevator, nose etc and maybe a choice of insignia (RAF, USAAF, Luftwaffe etc) so the odds of two guys ending up with exactly the same scheme are very long.

I'm not entirely sure why the community hasn't already demanded this, I guess it has something to do with an apparent commitment by the 'authorities' to stick rigidly to historical accuracy - strange really when you put it alongside the three country system. I only fly WW1 these days and generally up my favourite mount (Camel) in its' historically accurate skin against small hordes of Dr1, DVII, F2b and other Camels... if anyone can find an account of that scenario in the annals of history I'd be very interested to read it.

And btw the 'small hordes' of which I speak are getting smaller, someone needs to listen hard and act soon or they could disappear altogether.

I'm sure this is why HTC doesn't let people have custom skins that they can distribute and fly online.   :noid

Well, it WOULD be a stealth fighter, minus the giant red icon that would give away your possition  :devil.

I remember doing something simmilar to that for the 110, B-25H, and 190F8. Made it a green simmilar to the ground color so that fighters would have a hard time seeing it. Then I stumbled into the icon issue.

Yeah but imagine the damage one could do with that type of skin in a tank. Plus I think some would think it was a bug or something seeing an icon but no plane.

If I can tell it's a P-40, is it really stealth?  :neener:

Now which is it?

Now which is it?

Why the hell would anybody download an invisible P-40 skin?

To make the game more difficult?

It would affect them and people that chose to download it. Community skins, non historical, just for chits and giggles.

That kind of stuff.

Umm why wouldn't they?  Or make and use any other skin like that.

Okay, sure, it would only affect them. Here's a scenario. You spot a normal looking P39Q. Knowing its rear view is obstructed you move in behind and below him slowly creeping up on him. Thinking to yourself you're about to get an easy kill because there is no way he'll see you.
Thing is he made himself a custom skin that only he can see. He looks behind him and instead of his view being obstructed like any other P39 he sees this.

He then sees you sneaking up, turns around, and kills you. You find out he is using an invisible skin, how do you react?

Badly.

Never thought of that for some reason.

Your idea is a good one. I myself would love to have it since there are some really cool historical skins I want to make but cant since they never saw combat. You just have to know that some idiots would use it to give themselves unfair advantages.

No skins you make will be visible online without HTC going through the process of hosting them on their server for download in their own format. That means HTC is going to see them and review them as they package them up into a .res file.

Further, I don't recall ever (from day 1) mention of being able to see your offline skins in the DA before. I would find this highly unlikely unless it was totally a glitch/bug that HTC fixed. They would never intentionally do this, from what I've seen so far.

Skins won't show up online unless HTC puts them up there for download, and they won't do that unless they meet the skinning criteria.

P.S. Bright neon green flame skins and rainbow colored planes is one thing I detest with IL2 skins. Mega-thumbs-down on this request.
