Yes, no joke. Student was driving - he did it and still landed. Video is still processing at the moment, but should improve in the next hour or so. Is in full HD.

How in the world did the prop miss that bird? :huh
-
As horrible as it is, I laughed my bellybutton off! *thunk!*
-
Wow, glad it wasn't worse. On a side note, that audio is sweet!
-
Beautiful video quality!
-
doesnt look like a hit nor that it went near the prop. I see a bird that was with its pals on the runway... gets spooked by the plane, flies parallel direction to the plane and gets overtaken by the plane (not nose area but more like on the middle of the right wing) and it swerves into the fuselage but at the last moment reversed its flight and pulled out of a direct hit with the plane and used its feet to bounce off. Not through the prop but just behind the right side window of the cabin.
Look at it using pause/play to see the birds flight path. Better yet if the vid owner would put the video in slow-motion we could get a better view.
cool vid anyway :)

That camera is nice. Do we see the same seagul again at the very end of the video laying just on the starboard side of the runway centerline? If so "pissed off" isn't exactly the term I would use to describe his current state :P
-
That's the GoPro camera ..

That was the same guy at the end. He pushed my door in
A bit when he hit, so he felt it.
-
That collision model is bs man!
-
That seagull needs to spend some time in the TA - he had nowhere near enough separation for the lead turn.
-
Glad ur safe Wolfa :salute
Great video!!
-
Alex, I'm glad you two are ok as it's not really a laughing matter. That camera is absolutely amazing! 1080p on a 23" WS is a joy. But that seagull hit, thank God it hit where it did. Kudos to the student as well for a good landing.
-
hey that camera is unbelievable, I am going to have to get one for a headcam.
Do you think you would have been ok if it hit the prop?
Looked like it could have been costly to repair but the landing should have still been quite possible?
-
http://www.usahas.com/ Here ya go. :D Although I don't think nexrad will pick up birds that low.
-
Student seemed to handle it well. Only a slight move to the left.
Looked like a beautiful day to fly also.

The Goose which we plowed into Xmas eve 2009 was around $30,000 in damage to fix - and it went through the propeller. Things which were damaged:
* Engine (torn down)
* Propeller + Governor + mags (torn down)
* Antennas broken top side fuselage
* Antennas broken bottom of fuselage
* Lower fiberglass cowling paint cracked
* Lower right side wheel pant cracked*
* Windshield cracked off sealant - replaced

Seagull is dead at end. Don't think it was pissedoff, just pissed itself on deathbed.
-
Ouch on the 30k, i think I remember that thread infact
-

Obviously that Sea Hog was trying for a HO.
"Mine! Mine! Mine!" *thunk*
Glad you're okay. Still feel sorry for the bird though.

Animal Magnet, goose, deer, now this :O
Seriously thought good thing it did not hit.
-
1. Awesome clip
2. This camera idea of yours has to of paid for itself at least twice over if not more already.
That collision model is bs man!
Exactly what I was thinking!!!! HAXZORS!@ :furious At the very least, where's your missing right wingtip and elevator due to that collision?! :devil
-
what a ram-tard!
Cool video Wolfala :)

I didn't have the Go Pro on the day but a swallow or Swift whacked my windscreen on take off the recently. Can't think but it was fatal for the bird. Came in over the prop and bounced off the screen, left a feather for evidence stuck on the windscreen.
Mentioned on another thread how a Heron saw me late and broke away. Same with a pigeon. Superb flyers, I had no option but keep going, being low and slow but they saw me late and avoided me. There is a horrible moment when you see them coming, no chance to avoid but time enough for you to say 'Please God don't do this to me'.
I'm due a serious hit. The birds at my field are pretty busy.
-

Look on the runway at the very end. He must have taxied back to where he landed, cause theres a dead bird on the stbd side of the line.
-
It reminds me of a few years back my buddy worked for DH building those dash 8's and he invited me to see some testing.
They load semi frozen chickens into an air cannon and fire them at the plane as it's strapped down running in a hanger.
This was supposed to simulate bird strikes,if you ask me they were having too much fun to do any serious work! :devil
:salute
-
I would like a chicken cannon on my Yak please. :D

I wtched the original video at full HD, he's alive and standing on both feet. Less you can take a screen cap of something I missed, only a pissed seagull wouldn't give a sht if I moved within 2 inches of him

Which airport is that? Sikorsky? The runway looks like Groton.
Just curious

I dunno how to say this, but it happened again. Today while with a student at Westerly Rhode Island, we had landed and were on the roll out. Having the just dropped the nose we saw 3 figures appear - Ospreys. They had come down from their perch and chilled on the runway. The one on the far left bugged to the left - the 2 on the right however were not so lucky...
There was nothing we could do. If we swerved right we would've nailed one dead on in the propeller and killed him for sure. If we went left we would've taken the other 2 out. The one on the left was hit by the wing and more or less bounced off with a broken wing. The one on the right was clipped by the descending blade of the propeller. I wasn't in a good mood - nor was my student since it was his first.
On the brightside, both Ospreys survived the incident and were picked up by a recovery/rehab expert. Assuming they survive the next couple of days, the one who has a good wing (on the left) will likely return to flying. The one on the right who lost his wing will likely be cared for by one of those conservationists who takes injured animals to schools for education and the sort.
My student and I will likely be visiting them in the facility in the next coming weeks to check their progress.

Well I hope they live and if they do maybe you could give them their very own call signs.
-
Man, that's tough luck wolf and upsetting to see. That one that got sucked back through the prop nearly hit the camera.
they say bad things come in threes, keep your eyes extra wide open tomorrow.
-
You guys need to have a shutgun party at this field. Also, don't remove dead. That would solve bird problem for a little while at least.
And those 'survivors' should be placed on a stake. Just saying...

Alex,
I'll have to get a number, but one was euthanized, because state law
requires this with any major wing break. The other will recover and be
released in about a week to ten days I'm told. We understand there was
nothing you could do. I'll try to get back to you soon.

Ospreys are a protected species as are seagulls ... Ospreys were on the brink of extinction and have made a miraculous comeback on the East Coast. They are one beautiful and majestic bird ... also know as the Sea Eagle.
Wolf ... glad you and your student are OK ... it's a shame that they had to be on the runway ... for all involved.
-
SeaEagle....now there's a call sign!
-
I accidentally landed on a hare , didn't see him due to doing a full-stall landing with nose high.
I head a silent "dumph" on my left gear , when I backtracked the runway I saw what was left of the poor animal.

Well thats good news Wolf.
Can't blame yourselves, nothing you could have done about it.

I hit a seagull ... in Idaho for all places ... last week. Bunch were on the runway, One went straight to me, hit with a double thump. Bounced on the nose cone, then on the windshield. No damage, nor blood, guess the angles were just right. Goose season is Le scare. Right climbing turn at 250kts just to fly right in the middle of panicked flocked ... looks lile someone is throwing storage bins at you. Don't want to know what damage would those do.
I've been hit by lightning much more often than I hit a bird  I think it's 4 to 2 for now.
-
Well at the worst they'll put your Airbus into a river.
I've hit a few. In fact I destroyed the left wing of a 30 minute old TKS anti ice system on a Mooney by hitting a duck on the test flight after it was installed. I crushed a radome on an E-170 hitting a snow goose. I couldn't see them against the bright light and snow on the ground. Lots of Killdeer and little black starling thingys have met their demise at my hand as well. The following pictures aren't me, but it's what happens to a Canada Goose when it gets sucked into the inlet at the base of the Lear 60's vertical stab. My buddy was flying this airplane and hit a total of 4 in the flock. The tower controller relayed the report that he was 1 away from being an ace on the taxi-in after airport ops removed the dead ones from the runway prior to landing.

We hit a crow on I-95 once, totaled our windshield.
Cool video, btw.

G,
Is that the APU intake?
-
I don't believe so. I think it's the same as the 45 where it's a ram air scoop used for cooling of the air cycle machine/Pack. The ductwork the goose is in does two 90º turns to get to where it ended up.
<edit>
The 45 has a couple holes on the upper right aft portion of the fuselage. This is the APU inlet and exhaust. The 60 I think has the inlet and exhausted opposite one another on the rear of the fuselage because they don't have the external baggage the 45 does. Don't quote me on that though :)

Phew.....did not need those last pics lol....but good god you filming Avatar 2 Wolfala? That camera is incredible.
