Title: Just FYI ... Eset pricing model change.
Post by: Ghastly on August 30, 2010, 06:25:32 AM
I helped my sister-in-law this weekend with a new computer setup, and found when we went to license Eset that the pricing model has changed.  You no longer license AV and SmartSuite for the same price, and you no longer get 3 computers in the base license any more - you license a specific number of systems, 1 to 3, or 5 and up now.

http://www.eset.com/store

The cost is a "noticably" higher than before  -  2 years on 3 computer's is now 113.00, but more importantly, I wanted to point out that it has changed.  I know I've post more than once that you can run it on up to 3 computers - but that's no longer (necessarily) true with the current licensing model.

For home users it doesnt seem to have changed much if at all for 1 to 4 computers.

How so?  When I licensed it about a year ago, the base license allowed you to install on up to 3 computers, either AV or Smartsuite, IIRC for under $80.  Now you pick which -AV and SmartSuite are priced differently - and you specifically choose a number of systems to license.  That's a very different licensing model.

Or am I somehow looking at the wrong storefront?

In 2008 I paid $58.99 for a 2 yr plan for a single system I was sending to the Philippines. Today a single system is still $58.99.

On that page you linked to click on "Home" instead of "Home Office/Small Business."

No, I am clicking "Home".  The 59.99 today licenses you to run AV (not SmartSuite) on 1 system.

2 years ago, that same license allowed you to run either AV or SmartSuite on up to 3 systems.  So yes, if you took advantage of the "bare minimum" that the license allowed you 2 years ago then the cost is the same as taking "full advantage" of the lowest cost license today, and you can re-up the one system just AV at the same total cost. But if you took advantage of running SmartSuite on 3 systems, re-upping is going to cost you $113.00.

Just as an aside - I'm not challenging their new licensing in anyway, I'm not upset, I'm not arguing that it's unreasonable or unfair - I'm just pointing out that it has changed, so that other folks here don't do what I've done - which is tell people that they can run it on up to 3 systems because I wasn't aware that the licensing had changed.

Actually a renewal is $111.99 for three but I see your point. I dont use the Smart Security product and the antivirus hasnt changed. Did the security program change somehow?  :huh
