Title: X-52 getting Squeaky
Post by: redman555 on August 31, 2010, 10:10:58 PM
I have had my X-52 for awhile now, but it has been getting fairly squeaky, was curious if anyone has oiled it?  Didn't wanna do it if its gonna risk breaking it.  Not sure where to put oil either.

I put some multi-purpose grease at the base where the plastic disc at the bottom of the spring meets the circular base.  Makes for smoother operation and no squeaking.

You should not use either a petroleum based product, or WD-40 for lubricating the sliding ring tensioning mechanism.  This is because both can soften the plastic, and ruin the stick.  Personally, my own experience with the Xseries was that it didn't last long enough for that to matter, but I thought I'd mention it.

When I had one, I used a dab of Lithium grease.  Others have suggested using Pam, the cooking spray.

smear of Lithium grease on the raised plastic circle removes the stiction :aok

Ordinary candle wax has worked great for me.

A bar of soap would do about the same.

I use a silicone spray every few weeks.  Keeps it smooth and squeak free, and no mess!

You guys should use "teflon" grease...NOT lithium or multi purpose. Regular grease like this is caustic and can melt certain kinds of plastic or components...plus its really messy if it get transfered to your keyboard by accident.

Use teflon grease. This is for things like camera's and electrical components. You can find it in a camera shop or hobby store. Some computer stores sell a kind of silicon lubricant that will work.

I have used the high quality makup vasoline found in beauty stores before and that works good...just use a verrrrrrrrryyyyy small amount. This kind is thinner and better quality. You can use reguar vasoline but its thick and and can build up and make a black goo that gets on your hands.

Baby oil will work but use a very small amount. Put a little on the end of a Q tip and dab...then swab with a dry Q tip.

lithium-based grease is generally pretty inert, teflon is just an additive (one lithium grease I have has PTFE in it, another has Mo). silicone may be better though, only ever used it on seals :aok

From what I've seen a Silicon based lube is going to be best for your stick long term.

I've gotten good results from taking a paper towel to the bottom of the tension plate before flying.  Had my 52 over a year and no squeaks.

EDIT: Dust is your main enemy.  Keep it clean and you'll be surprised at how long the 52 will last.

I put 1 drop oh Household Oil 3 in 1 and it seems to be fine now, used tissue to spread it on the little metal disk.

Just a note here for anyone that decides they want to lubricate the internals of the stick for whatever reason; they've set plenty of traps inside the stick. They've separated the electronics between the upper and lower pieces and hot glued the wires to the frame, meaning if you just yank the bottom off, you'll tear the wiring out. Same goes for the X45, except it isn't hot glued...the wire is just extremely short and thin.
At the same time, it's likely unnecessary to do, since they use a white grease that seems to re-work in to the parts as they move about.

Another random fact; I'd say about 50-60% of the X-52's weight comes from metal strips screwed to the inside of the bottom of the stick and throttle... :D
