Is it just me,or does the JU 88 seem like a really good bombing platform.Always seem to hit the mark with level bombing.Haven't done any dive bombing yet,but I've read that the prototype were an affective dive bomber as well.

It was also used as a dive bomber during the war. It even had dive flaps on that plane as well.

It is quite a good plane. I've flown it a lot in scenarios. It is very versatile, carrying a large bomb load (more than the B-17) or two torpedoes. It has decent speed (compared to various other bombers, excepting the Boston and Ki-67), and is quite rugged. Also, it can be used somewhat in a divebombing role, as pointed out.
If I had one wish for the plane, it would be for a tail gun.

It actually serves as a much better dogfighter than anything else. It turns like a zeke, shoots like an Fw190A8, and dances like a butterfly. At least AoM's JU-H88's do. That's pronounced Jay-U Hate E Eight for all you non 1337 speakers out there.

underrated buff, pretty quick, large and versatile bomb load. poor defensively and dreadful climbrate though...
great excuse for luftwaffe fighter escort :aok

i like the ju88 a LOT. it carrys more ords than the b17, is faster(i think), climbs quicker, and is (to me anyway) much more versatile.
it's only real weakness, is defense, and range as compared to the likes of the b17, or lancasters.
i like playing around in it sometimes......climb to alt, go to a field, and drop a single egg on each anti aircraft gun. use the little eggs for this. it's silly, but fun nonetheless.

I fly them some.....
You know I'm just a cartoon buff pilot anyway.

my favorite thing is to wait em out when fighters are attacking me. they think the guns on the 88's can't hurt em. i've had guys come as close as d200 before firing..and at that distance, the 88's guns will rip them apart. :devil

the 88 is faster up to 20k (10-20mph), but it's climbing much slower than a B-17:
A Ju 88, with full bomb load and 50% fuel for a flight time of 34 minutes (sea level) takes 20 minutes to get to 15K, 32 minutes to reach 20k.
A B-17, with full bomb load and 25% fuel for a flight time of 37 minutes (sea level) takes only 14 minutes to reach 15k and 19 minutes to get to 20k.

well, i did mention range as one of its shortcomings.
the types of missions i use it for, i rarely go over 10k alt. even in lancs or b17's i rarely go over 10k alt....although in the last week, i've taken lancs to 22k alt. it's entertaining watching spitfires and p47's chase me to that altitude, and do a dead six attack.....and well.....you know what happens to em. :devil

 It was one hell of a dive bomber in WWII.

If it had a fwd firing gun that was worth a crap it would be solely responsible for the most intense and longest lasting WHIIIINE thread ever created on these boards :aok :rock :rock

I wasn't talking about range at all... ;)

Huh? Max bomb load for an 88 is 4 x 500kg, right? That's about 4400 lbs., the B-17 carries 6,000. And rugged? Maybe compared to a Zeke! Not very tough compared to a B-26 or any of the 4-engine jobs, though, and when you add in the popguns it makes easy meat for fighters. And as Lusche pointed put it climbs like a wheezing hippo (faster than fully loaded Lancs, maybe, but Lancs carry three times the bomb load).
It has its uses (it's great for torpedoing CVs whose owners have foolishly neglected to take out ords at the field they're attacking) but I think there are good reasons you don't see it much in general use in the MA.

Add up the "20 - 50kgs". Unlike this game, B-17's weren't "dive bombers". The Ju-88 on the other hand, could. So you could surmise that in order to sometimes handle the additional stress of dive-bombing, that yes they were rugged.
Lancasters and 17's are "Heavy Bombers". You're comparing "Heavy Bombers" to something that is similar to a "Mosquito/A-20" and can still tote 5409lbs. I use the 88's and typically sink CV's with a single formation.
As for defensive armament. Again, the 88 isn't a heavy bomber, nor a medium bomber.

JuH88's are best suited for carpet bombing runways and pwning fighters in turn fights.

i was watching shuffler in a ju87 give a guy fits. unfortunatly, i didn't know it was him, as he was on the other country....i asked the friendly if he wanted me to stay out, and he said c'mon in......so i did.....got the 87, and saw it was shuff........i felt like a schmuck for shooting down a squaddie, but i bravely ran away and landed it anyway, as that's prolly the only "shuffler kill" i'll ever land. :noid :bolt: :rofl
