Hah, very good.

The Soviet Union was very successful if you take their goals into account. With better managment it would have been scarier, if Kruschev was allowed and given the resources to build the Russia he wanted, it would have been a match if not better than the USA.

Completely agree with this. In my honest opinion, the only reason why the United States as well as the Soviet Union were/are so successful is because of how large they are land wise and the luck that so many natural resources are in those borders.

Ah, my young Australian friend. Throughout the relatively brief history of the United States, there have been many predictions of imminent failure. So, far, the closest call was the Civil War, which was self inflicted.
Compare the Russian civil war to the US Civil War in terms of the behavior of the victors towards the defeated. Our man, Abe, allowed the defeated soldiers to keep their arms and horses and return home. The Bolsheviks filled mass graves and gulags.
Russians have done some amazing things scientifically, artistically and militarily. Social engineering is not one of their strong points.

The Soviet Union was not successful. The Russian people did amazing things, among them the defeat of Fascism, despite the drag of an inefficient economic system.
Natural resources are not a requisite for success. For example, Japan – no resources – big population.

Pinko's, both of you!!!

Might want to give the Allies a little credit for the defeat of Fascism too...

Re: Rufleak
The Russians suffer from a disease that Central and Eastern Europeans have, its called practicality. The CCCP runs on the Motto
CDEE
Or
Cheap
Durable
Efficient
Effective
Mass graves and gulags were cheap and simple options to a complicated problem. While deplorable and horrid, it was cost efficient and served the purpose of winning a war. Social structure is never a strong point where superpowers are concerned.
The USA is at the core really no different. I find that Russia was just a No Bullcrap version of the USA, out for: Power, global credibility and money minus the diplomatic political bullcrap posturing.
Which leads me to the opinion that the USA and USSR were evil twin brothers (if you will excuse the crude metaphor). One has a no bullcrap hamfisted approach that achieves results no matter the the method. And the other with finesse and manipulation of economic and complicated political posturing with moderate application of force where necessary. But other than that, they are exactly the same, and still are.
And in the end, the results are still the same either way you do it. A glorious victory, or an endless bloodbath that ends in defeat.

Seriously?
then what was he talking about?
(Allied nations during the Cold War) The term "allies" itself, in no way, directly reflects to the Allied nations of WWII. However, as with many things, WWII is what is hearkened to first.

I'm a little lost here. :headscratch:
So you believe the Bolsheviks were somehow better than the southern United States?
And self inflicted, as in civil war, as in war against ourselves.

No. The difference is in Russia bad guys won.
And self inflicted, as in civil war, as in war against ourselves.
Wow...Thank you, i know what civil war means.

Actually, I was using the difference in the treatment of the vanquished at the hands of the victors to differentiate between the two.
But other than that, they are exactly the same, and still are.
The US and USSR were ideological rivals. They were both large, militarily strong and used weaker nations as pawns in their global struggle. Not much else. It is an inaccurate oversimplification to say that the US and USSR were the same.
I'm consciously trying to avoid politics. This forum isn't the place for it.

Anyone else find the fact that the russians have panzers really irritating?
Great video, and I cant get the song out of my head.
