Title: F4U-4 VMBF-231 Ace of Spades Squadron.
Post by: lyric1 on September 08, 2010, 10:04:25 AM
Found this aircraft #19 in an old book I have & a link to #20. From what I have read about this unit during WWII,it was doing a lot of the work on islands that were intially skipped over while the war was pushing on to Japan.

Since we have so few F4U-4 skins I thought some one may like to do it.

I have emailed Mr Butterfield the pilot pictured in the #20 aircraft. We will find out I guess shortly on this one.

I believe Pappy is correct. The canopy looks to be of the -1A. Also, judging by the prop blur, there are only three blades. The -4 has four. I may be wrong though.

There's also no chin scoop. Definitely not -4s.

VMSB-231 was in S2BC Helldivers in the Summer of 1945 when F4U-4s deployed.  Also, doubtful anyone would deploy their top fighter to a unit that far behind the main air to air fighting.

Yeah it is not looking like a -4 have not got a reply yet from the pilot. Bloody books with bad info in them  In fact the series I have found are late 60's & early 70's issue. In two separate books of the same series I have a profile of a F4U-1D in another I have a picture of the very same aircraft claiming it to be a F4U-4 & yet due to the angle of the picture & because you can only see a partial of it,there is a cannon sticking out of the wing of a CHOG. After checking some info on that squadron it is a CHOG.

Books what can you do when they are wrong. Oh as a foot note found pictures of almost an entire squadron of CHOGS some with nose art even. So not an entire loss I guess due to bad info in books. :aok
