Title: sound problems.

I have a new card that I installed about 1 month ago with no problems wound was great. last week I Installed a new cpu fan so i took my computer apart and put it back together.  sound does not work, it is very scratchy and when i test, sound is directed to the wrong speaker.  for example my left speaker plays both center and right, but it is very scratchy, my right speaker plays the bass.  all sounds are very scratchy.  I installed a new sound card thinking the old one was defective, I also replaced the speakers with a new set.  no difference.  I moved the card to a different pci it got better but it is still very scratchy and sounds are bad.  I can use my usb headset with no problems at all.  I also did a full install of win764 with all the updates, no difference.  my onboard sound is disabled in bios.  any ideas anybody?  something I noticed, speaker wires to sc has green, orange, black wires, but sb does not have a black wire hook up, it has a gray color. I connected black wire to gray, which is what I did before. here's my dxdiag.

Did you disturb the wiring from the motherboard HD/AC97 connection to the speaker jack?

you mean from the soundcard to the speakers? i have used 3 different sets of wires.  i have the x540 used two different sets of speakers/video cards, both same results.   moved sound card to a different pci slot, no change. reinstalled windows (have 3 partitions) on the first partition, no change.  one possible scenario i can think of, is i may have damaged something on the mobo that has to do with sound when i removed it to install the new heatsink fan.  but the weird thing is that my usb headset works fine.  I have installed the latest drivers for the sb card, removed them, then reinstalled them again, no change.  this only happened after i removed everything to install the sinkfan, before everything was great.
