I logged out this morning after playing for awhile, and when I tried to reconnect it gave me the error message "unable to connect for version checking, please check firewall settings."
So I did, and everything is fine. So, I turned the firewall off completely, and I still get this message...now there's no firewall running at all (which makes me nervous).
Anyone else run into this?

I did yesterday. After I checked all my router & firewall settings (which were fine), it suddenly worked again after ~15 minutes.

We were doing some small server upgrades, hence the window of downtime that occurred this morning.

lol. Had this same issue. I ended up reinstalling the game, which, I guess, finished just as everything was working again! What a coincidence.

If you are having this problem now, it is either a firewall on your computer, or in your router, or it is a general routing issue over the Internet.

Maybe punkbuster needed to be restarted on the server.

How do i check my firewall settings? I can't log into the game.

Windows firewall should be in control panel.

I'm having the same problems after shutting down firewall and all virus protection. I switch to DSL and so I have a new router (that I can't control). That might be the problem. I got rid of the "unable to connect for version checking" by downloading the new program and doing a clean install, but it crashes as soon as it trys to open an arena.

:banana: I finally got mine working. seems all I had to do was adjust my video settings at the program start menu. :banana:

Having this problem now my self it was not an issue earlier today. Tried changing the video settings that did not help changed all the firewall settings & that is not doing it either?

Well after 20 min of trying it is working now?

Back into the game after almost two years, (some cancer ack) I am facing the "Unable to connect for version checking" while trying to go "online" All the replies from last year speak of firewall settings and router settings. I have truned off all my known firewall settings but have no ability to change any router settings. Change them to WHAT if I could? There seems to have been absolutely no trouble over the past ten years+ in HighTechCreations getting their automatic payment...maybe i should have those settings?
Do I have to try to reload the game from new? I am on Version 2.22 Patch 1 which should give someone a clue as to the last time I have played. I did notice somewhere there was a manual patch but it was for later versions than what I have now.. If I start from scratch do I keep my handle and my points?
Open to suggestions.
