Title: Harddrives....what to buy...
Post by: Nike on June 13, 2000, 08:41:00 AM
Hi guys...

Need feedback on HD...is there a big diffrence between brands or do I go with someone special, I've heard that IBM drives rock but now I found a seagate drive that was faster in the specs and larger size...

The choice stands between:

IBM Deskstar 75GXP - 15,3 GB IDE Ultra ATA-66 7200 RPM

OR

Seagate Barracuda 2 - ST320420A 20,4 GB IDE Ultra ATA-66 7200 rpm

Check out this article from Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/00q2/000602/index.html). Not recomending anything but he has some good points.

Go for the IBM. HDDs are one area where the manufacturer's brand actually matters. Of all the HDD I've personally purchased the best have always been IBM. I have 7-year old 1 GB IBM drives that are still going strong. Other brands seem to last 3-4 years at best.

I bought Deskstar 75GXP few days ago and its great. Quite, fast not hot, I'm definitly happy with it.
And Barracuda is IDE? I always thought its SCSI.
