I've been using it for the last year - and apart from having to cobble together a bunch of drivers that work most of the time - its a great OS. Why'd it never catch on?

I'm guessing here, but I'd have to say #1 is the driver issue.
#2 there really is not all that much software written to take advantage of 64 bit.
So with a few notable exceptions, there really isn't much advantage to it.

Lack of solid driver support and Microsoft really did just cobble it together. Sort of a band-aid OS.
The small footprint of XP really did not warrant going to 64 bit. I still only have a 2GB system at home and with all the video editing I do, I never have a RAM issue. I cannot figure out why people think they need upmteen GB of RAM to run Facebook.

I do not know what those are, but I take it they are bloated applications of some type?

wasnt XP64 just Server 2003 64 bit repackaged for the comsumer?
