Title: P-47 "Jacky's Revenge"
Post by: Larry on September 28, 2010, 03:31:45 AM
Back when I was doing skins for my friends in the 353rd FG I was looking for, but never found, a P47 in 353rd colors with a tail fillet. (think that's what its called) The other day I came across a picture of this bird and was wondering if it was a made up paint scheme or if there was really a bird like this that flew in the war?

Not sure about this specific case. However I would guess that any bubble canopied P-47D flying today would have the fillet fitted for safety reasons, even if the aircraft its scheme was based on didn't have it originally.

I checked LittleFriends website, and P-47D LH*I is listed as "Maggie V".  Couldn't find a match for that tail code, either.   It's a nice looking bird but I would think it'd be listed in Littlefriends if it was a an actual scheme...

Looking through the massive 353rd FG history, I didn't find any reference to that particular bird.  There are lots of photos of bubble top Jugs, but I didn't come across any with the fillet.  They got Mustangs in October 44.  Not sure when the fin fillet showed up on the Jugs in the ETO.

If I recall correctly they did some fillet installations in the field.

When I have a spare moment I'll look that up.

This P-47 is based at Republic Field in Farmingdale Long Island, NY. Home of the original Republic Aviation Co. There is a great Airpower Museum that has airworthy P-40s, AT-6s, TBM, F4U and a C-47 as well as some great static displays and restorations. Well worth the time.
