So, I was good with this really cool job until he started free climbing.
The portion where the antennae is moving is freaky too.
A climb up the tallest tower (http://video.yahoo.com/watch/8244494/21915033#thumb=http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sch/cn/video04/8244494_rnd05eaa526_19.jpg)

Prime example of the danger of internet..
The guy who made the video got negative feedback for releasing the video and pulled it from youtube fearing to be blacklisted on all telecom carriers. Too late, it's all over yahoo and liveleak.
-
NO way.........NO WAY I would ever climb something like that.
NO FREAKIN WAY!
-
I think i just blacked out and got a PW watching that ugggg
-
Omg ive been watching it during climbouts i can only stomach about 15 seconds at a time :uhoh
-
mommy no! dont make meeee!!!! good god i felt sick myself just watching that
-
Where are their parachutes? I would never climb something that high unless I have a measurable chance of survival if I fell off. Hahaha.

Opening a parachute while falling within 3 feet of a structure like that...you'd most likely hang yourself with the lines. I would guess the bulk and weight (even though they are very compact and light today) outweigh the chances of getting hung up while ascending the structure.
-
wow :aok
-
You need to be in quite good shape for that....
-
OK, I made it about 3 minutes in before I started to get nauseous just from watching it.
DO NOT WANT!
-
:O Not enough money...
-
I almost puked.
-
no way on earth would you get me up there !!!!!!!!
-
"Now where the hell are my pliers?" Doh!
Never had to climb that high, but I can only imagine he would have the same feeling if he had left something at the shop 2 hrs. away like I have!!! MF!!
:salute 11

Well, think about it...after 20-30 feet, you are unlikely to survive a fall. So what's another 1600 feet? :x
-
of course falling 30 feet you might have time to think 'oh s----' falling 1600 you'd have time to think life over a bit. A little over 1 second for 30 ft a skosh short of 10 seconds for 1600 ft I think. I could be off a bit on that.
-
Yeah I saw that on Yahoo aswell. Freaky as H3LL!

Well If i did the math right it would take about 43.9 seconds to hit the ground.
1600 ft is 0.3030 miles. 145 mph is about terminal velocity for a human. 145 x 0.3030 = 43.939393 because D = RxT so T = D/R
Some one check my math.
-
I cheated and used an online calculator.. :)
but my math probably is off

Something just seems very weird about that like isn't there a better way to do it besides sending some poor smuck up a 1700ft+ tower?

If you come up with a solution with that, DO NOT TELL ANYONE until you talk with the companies that maintain the towers. Otherwise no.

This is the pay scale for a COMMUNICATIONS TOWER TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR. Might give a rough idea of what these guys get paid.
Think about it, fresh air, very decent pay, plenty of excerise, and you also get an office with a view. What more could you ask for?? :x
-
What more could you ask for?? :x
A rappelling harness and/or a BASE jumping chute.
Maybe a commercial application for those wing suits? Fly far enough out from the tower and then pop the chute.

It seems it would be much safer to lower the fixit guy from a helicopter. The obvious reason they send the schmuck up the tower is cost.
-
New a guy in Tulsa that owned his own company installing comm. towers. He told me they can't even come close to providing insurance because of cost. But the schmucks make a killing!!

watched the entire video...might actually mind this as long as i knew i could make it make it down again

well i just realized i totaly screwed up the math. It would closer to about 7.5 seconds of freefall because T = D/R I multiplied instead of dividing the first time
So 145mph/0.3030 miles = 0.00208965517 hours, 0.1253793102 minutes, and 7.522758612 seconds
If i'm still wrong someone please tell me.
-
My calcs were quick and dirty and I cheated by looking up an online calculator. To be precise you have to account for acceleration to terminal velocity.
I'd have to sit down and seriously contemplate this to get it exactly right and there are a lot of unknown variables such as drag, mass, was the fall retarded in any signifcant way, and so on.
But, seeing as how I really only come here to discuss AH, read the jokes, and watch the serious threads with interest I'll settle for 7.5 to 11 seconds from start of action to end of the event.
I'll stick with designing poles instead of climbing towers thankyouverymuch :D

You are assuming constant top speed over the whole distance. But the falling body has to accelerate first, reaching top speed after about 7 seconds
-
I used to jump from 13,000 feet. 43 seconds is way to long for 1600. Ill do the math then get back to you.
-
Its 11 seconds if you calculate terminal at 130
-
Great, where do I sign up?
-
was looking at the blog and one of the posters found the location of this tower...and guess what...its IN HOUSTON!!
Everything is bigger in Texas :joystick:
Heres the google maps link:

Nice to know if I ever decide to fall off of a 1700 foot tower.
-
looks like a good place for a Base Jump :D
-
Why dont they just mount the antennae on an elevator of sorts and lower it to work on it?
-
cant get it past the guy wires. Although if anybody ever invented something that worked they'd make bank.
-
Also you have understand how a transmission tower works. In the video did you see those large pipes that look like water lines? The signal bounces around inside those pipes and it does that all the way up to the antenna. You can't simply lower the antenna like you would think.
A little over a year ago I got to watch a tower crew install the brand new antenna for our TV station. It was quite an experience watching these guys hoist an antenna that's mostly made of glass and weighs almost 1000lbs up 400 feet to attach it to the tower.
Working in TV I have nothing but respect for these guys.
-
I know some microwave feedhorns use waveguides instead of ultra low loss coax, would of thought UHF television broadcast antennas would use 7/8" low loss coaxial cable. Wouldnt expect them to use waveguides also
-
awww hellz no!!! i saw this a few weeks ago and had to turn it off when he went free climbing...

Notice the storm clouds? :uhoh
 Notice the video did not show them coming down?

Ya lets couple my 2 greatest fears..wild heights and lightning!

Do you think Pizza Hut delivers to them guys for a lunch break?

That red bag was actually the delivery bag. :aok

Theres absolutely no way you could pay me enough money to climb up there, I mean a guy could say, here's a million go climb that, and I'd still be like no way, I got scared just watching him do it.

I'd climb that for million dollars.
-
I would climb it for less than a million.
-
For a million? yea I could do it but it would be a one time thing never again.
And I'd like to see where the support wires from the ground are attached so I could strap on a chute just incase.
I'm a pretty good climber so it would be more mental than anything.

Heights don't bother me, heights on top of things that can move bother me.

Same here. I'd be like "Happy thoughts, happy thoughts, happy thoughts,..." all the way up there.
