A lot of us have meaningless and unimportant lives, that's why this game is so damned critical to our deflated self esteem!

and here I thought that when I became an uber cartoon pileit I'd have scads of gorgeous women with negotiable morals hanging on both arms, endorsement contracts all over, be invited to Superbowl parties, and have car dealerships begging me to drive their cars so they could put a picture of me on their wall.

hmmmm.... *scratches chin...

Are the Pigs around?  I need a reality check... kill me with extra extreme prejudice tonight mmmkay?

In eve online we have a saying from way back (I've been in that game for over 7 years now)  'Internet Spaceships is serious buisness'.

in many respects, this applies here too - Internet Airplanes is serious buisness.  And I do not think calling something a 'video-game' likes its some slander quite works - this is not a video game in th old fashioned sense - this is an MMO, and MMOs are very serious things indeed.  if you disagree, then you are just not playing enough/well/seriously.

Honestly, the whole - 'its just a game guys' argument is crap.  its a game for sure, and a serious on at that.

Lol! Thanks Ruah

"I'm not playing it serious enough" Sweet! The fact that you think I need to reach some measurable level of reality to play in a cartoon world only further shows the level of reality that left it a long time ago.

"I'm sorry sir, you must be this tall to fly this plane."

Video Game
–noun
1.
any of various games played using a microcomputer with a keyboard and often joysticks to manipulate changes or respond to the action or questions on the screen.
2.
any of various games played using a microchip-controlled device, as an arcade machine or hand-held toy.

It is what it is.

Never said I didn't like it, didn't play it, didn't want to...

Merely just saying some people need to take a look around now and then and realize what they are doing. Good advice for anyone doing anything!

Dichotomy- I'll see what I can do. :)

Ruah's got a point.  Some have put a lot of time and effort into becoming better at this.  It's like any game or hobby.  Some do it casually, some play it to the best of their possible ability.  There's nothing wrong with either approach.  But the one common thing among everyone here seems to be, it's a really bad idea to try to tell them how to take the game, or play the game. :)

The one main difference between this and all other MMOs though, is this actually requires something approaching skill, not just patience and a lot of time to invest in it.  I think that's where a lot of the ego comes in, as this does take ability to do well.

Wiley.

Yall are going to make me be serious aren't you?

My AH philosophy is to be respected by the other players first, have fun doing it, work / study / pay attention to improve my abilities, log on and off with a smile on my face.  When I can't do the first and last it's time for me to find another hobby and I have no plans to do that in the near or distant future.  Way too many good people in and around this MMO to even consider a desire to leave again.  My one vacation wasn't a choice it was a necessity.

Well at the end of the day i believe that its a stress reliefe tool.

1 You know you had a long day at work,
 2 wife nagging at you,
 3 kids running riot,
4 The boss not giving you yer deserved pay rise,

All in all if a player ( member ) has had a stressful day then yes you shall incure some wrath. I mean think of poor Hitech he has to sit in his office all day reading our complaints our arguments and such. I mean what will he be like when he gets home. Staight into a hot bath and a bottle of fine malt beside him. Then out the bath and he probaly gets WIFE ACK tenfold. ( if hitech ever becomes a full blown alcholic then we are to blame ).

So maybe we should just sit back abit and behave like good little children. :)  :salute

Hitech and the others who rely on this game for their livelihood are the only ones who should take it seriously.

Having a heightened level of concentration to improve you skill set in a video game with a steep learning curve is ok with me. I enjoy learning and becoming a better pilot.

These are not the individuals I was referring too; well not all anyway, there is certainly some crossover.

I know... I know... "It's my 15 clams, I can do what I want....."

Everyone doesn't include everyone only everyone in the group that needs to be addressed, but even those that don't probably take the step anyway on their own. Just as Dichotomy said he did.

If some of us don't take this too seriously, why does everyone have to take a step back?

'cause you'll interfere with those that do, and need to step back. if you don't step back, then they can't and they'll keep being too serious, cause you didn't step back so they could step back, and they they'll take your not stepping back too seriously.

One thing I can say with complete honesty and no small amount of awe is this community does come together for each other.  When somebody on these boards or in game has a tragedy in their lives I've seen all manner of people stand up and support them.  The guy who was beating you over the head on the boards last week is the one who is wishing you the best and offering up  :pray 'ers for whatever situation you're in.  We're just like one big dysfunctional family and I'm the funny looking cousin sitting on the porch of the run down cabin playing the banjo.

Not saying I do it half azzed.  And I continually stink.. time and effort will pay off eventually.

When I'm in my little cartoon plane I do the best I can do.  I read, practice, try new rides, mess with my convergence, discuss tactics, and generally do the best I can do.  Time and patience will develop the skills.  But I, again, apply the fun factor to it.  When it ceases to be fun for me it's time to take a break.

That said, I have a real job, a son, a mortgage, bills, and real life concerns that take a much higher priority than any secondary entertainment can take.

Example:  Tonight I could have been practicing for my FSO, I could have been in the TA or offline trying to master an unfamiliar platform, I could have been reading aircraft comparison charts.  So what have I been doing? Shooting the bull with my 17 year old son, swapping websites and stories, catching up on the last week, setting our schedule for the coming week, dividing up chores, finding out who he has coming over, seeing what his plans are, discussing the death of his great grandfather, and so on...

Priorities gents because the day will come all too soon where he isn't a daily part of my life.  Part of me will be glad to see him strike out on his own and make his own way in this world.  A larger part of me will miss his company, our conversations, and yes even his counsel when I have serious decisions to make.

And Filth.. someday sir.. someday.. I'll be able to give you a run for your money... perhaps not today, next week, or next year... but I have a spot on my wall for your scalp all lined up  :D

I can't agree with that at all FiLtH.   It is only a game to me.  Doesn't mean that when I get the time to play, I don't give it my best shot.  And I do believe I can give you a run for your money when we run into each other :)

"It's only a game" to me means, my ego isn't so wrapped up in this, I'll get down on myself if I lose a fight.  I understand that the real world is serious and that real life matters.  I believe anyone who starts in a game like this or like Airwarrior for us who started there, goes through a time in the game where it means more then it should, and we spend all our free time and energy trying to be the best and make it far more important then it is.  As I mentioned in another thread, that was about 1998 for me, in Airwarrior.  I got over it though and got my priorities back in order so the game never got to the point I was frustrated or miserable playing.

AH is my escape, where my cartoon fighter pilot is invincible and hasn't a care in the world.  Everyone here is at a different point in their cartoon pilot careers.  There will always be the latest batch of guys thinking being the greatest cartoon fighter pilot in the world means something and attack the game that way.  And that's all good.  That being said, if you asked just about any of the people who've stayed around long enough, they'll tell you they've changed in their approach to the game in one way or another.  I'd suggest that those that don't end up burning out, taking a break or giving the game up.

To me, this IS just a game - that said, its a game that takes time to learn, practise to get better, and lots and lots of dying. When I'm playing, I do my best each and every time, win or lose. When I die, I get annoyed at myself for my decisions (ie, if I get ganged, ho'd etc) and my inability to work my way out of the situation I put myself into.

I get frustrated at myself, grumble to myself when a better peelot shoots me down, but re up and try again.

Personally, I have no problem getting shot down, tanked, or bombed.

What I don't like is the PM smack-talking, insults, and internet-tough guys who feel the need to tell you (in not so nice terms) that've been shot down, GV killed, whatever. Big deal, I'll go to the tower and get another brand-new, fully-armed and fueled airplane.

Overall, 95% of the people in the game are good people. Its hard to remember that its a game sometimes, and I find myself hating someone for tearing my wing off repeatedly. Then I'll get a .s or I'll fly with someone who's switched sides, and it brings it back to reality.

That being said, those 5% idiots are the reason I don't attend the convention - I'd kill someone. I might not be the best pilot, tanker, or AH gamer, but I can mess someone up in real life, and thats a hassle I don't need.

So I can see where not taking it too seriously can be applied - at least from an attitude point of view. From a skills point of view, or striving to be a better player, taking a step back will never happen. Too many hotheads, internet punks, and squeakers with something to prove. When you stop trying to improve - doesn't matter if its AH or real life - its time to move on to something else.

As for me, I'm off to master Windows Solitaire <jk>

i just try to not let that happen to me, 'cause it just starts snowballing at that point........i dwell on my mistakes if i let them bother me, then i make more, which i dwell on more...........and this all interferes with me learning what i need to do to not let it happen again.;

Remember the forum's is also used by certain players who want to vent rage and frustation at being killed all the time and who like to blame the aircraft for bad piloting skills.

But in the end Hitech and his team have a good forums and we will always have players complaining as it is their right to do so. Its upto you yerself to either post or stay clear of these topics. Yes you will get others posting in it to rile the poster of the topic but they are like kids who like to see someone raging for no reason. So you may help to encourage them or giggle at it and stay well clear of them.

You can count on it!!!  :salute

True story - it made headlines in NJ a few years ago.

Some guys were smack-talking on the old MSN Zone in the CFS (Combat Flight Simulator) arena. It digressed into name calling, etc., and someone ratted the other guy's real name and address out. Guy shows up at his house, pounds him with a tire iron, and ends up in jail. Other guy is still a vegetable.

You never know who's on the other end of a conversation. Could be a 100lb. punk 13 year old, could be a 245lb. crazy ex-Army type who's retired and looking for an excuse to roadtrip to your house. Regardless of how tough you are, or think you are, keep that in mind when you PM someone with insults.

This game really ticks me off sometimes. I made the mistake of posting a rant on the forum last week and I'm still catching hell over it. I've never professed to anything more than an average stick, but I pride myself in knowing that there are people in this who's respect I've earned. That means more than landing kills any day.

I have to fly the interturdnet airplanes because I need to feel superior in some way, while I call people out when I kill them, I deny it when they say they killed me. I like to hang out in the DA alot, and fly perk planes because im not good enough to get enough points for them in the MA. I complain about HO's and collisions, but deny when I crash into someone else. My k/d isn't very good, but I talk alot of crap because i'm behind a screen.

Who am I?

(this isn't me, just guess who I am talking about)

My opinion about getting shot down is simple: It happens to ALL the players in the game so man up, re-up and get revenge  :pray
