Anyone running/tried it yet?
Just curious before I take the big dive :)
-
Yep, works fine and can be tuned to look (almost) like Win98.
I got professional version but it doesn't recognize my MS FF Pro connected to SB-Live thought it works via integrated sound-chip or Terratec soundcard.
OS loads REALLY fast, is stable as rock and works nicely with Win2K drivers.
-
I've used it in work and will be buying it as soon as it is released.
Much better than any current MS OS.
-
Hiya's,
£200 i saw it priced at in UK !!! that's around $330 lmao, I think not until the price comes down or i am forced to upgrade windose 98 to xp for software reasons :D
Dunno what version that was though it was in Dixons (UK ripoff chainstore :p )
I thought it was oct release so maybe someone can enlighten me ?
Have Fun

I wouldn't get XP from any retail sales..
Product Activation Code..
Change anything in your system and you'll be forced to contact microsoft to get your computer working again.
Isn't m$ wonderful?
-
I was reading somewhere that WindowsXP will not be available as an upgrade... wish I could remember where.
It seems MS is going to make each version a full version from now on with no upgrade options.

Look I am no big fan of Microsoft but misinformation is not helpful.
Myth - Product action codes means reactivating anytime you change anything
Truth - Must change more than 60% of major components in your system. Should not be a problem unless you are trying to install to more than one machine.
Myth - No upgrades to XP.
Truth - Upgrades are allowed and prices for upgrades have been anounced. Mass upgrades for businesses are changing.
XP works great, is very stable. I am running it on a number of machines at work and at home. It is not revolutionary and most is not new, biggest improvement is that it works.

Its a superb OS.
And I havent tried the full version, only the RC2. Great OS, high price, and product activation can be dealt with (*wink* *wink*, *nudge*)
-
The only problem with XP that I see is that (like win2k originally) performance is going to decrease. AH users will probably lose several FPS going to XP from 98.
Windows ME users will love a real OS. ;)
Win2k SP2 users would be hard pressed to find a really good reason to "upgrade" at this point. It won't be any more stable than 2k already is. (Likely less stable to begin with.)
-
You know, I see no real reason to upgrade. I here complaints about 98 all the time, but I have never had my system crash, lockup, or any other such.
Don't get me wrong, I think Microsoft should be castrated for calling what they sell an operating system.
I figure XP will be pretty solid by the end of 2002. Maybe I will look at it then. You bleeding-edge technologists have a ball with it. :D
I wish I knew why my systems are so stable with 98. I bet I could reap a fortune from those that have so many problems.

If you get XP Pro you don't have to worry about the activation business.
Early remarks are nearly all positive. It is generally called the "OS Microsoft should have done before now."
I don't like the activation business, but there may not be any choice if the thing works as well as many say it does.
-
XP will NOT decrease your performance. It improved my fps in many games by 200%, and is MUCH more stable than Win98.

Rendar=Bill Gates? ;)
I, as always, will not get ANYTHING MS without seeing it or demo'ing it.
Im trying to find Animal's gf and steal her for ransom until he tells me where he got his XP ;) ;) :D
-
Tac, I think you may still be able to get the WinXP RC1 for $10, but I'm not sure. I was one of the first XP testers. :)
-
Rendar: Whoa 200%.. That's a bold statement.
Now which games was that, which system specs and from which fps you improved to which?
Btw: early reports of XP include having to activate after plugging a single USB device in the computer. So much for the 60%.
-
bill gates played warbirds looks like he plays ah also.
-
You can get a cracked version of XP from any number of warez newsgroups. And activation is disabled as well.
Don't worry. Bill can afford it.
Zero ;)

Just upgraded from 2K server to XP pro at work on 3 systems (Yep, was a big hairy scare ;) ) .. everithing running fine right now (Although, I only see it as a user, I am not the one fiddling with Active directories, Services & such...)
This is what I noticed so far:
- Starting up /shutdown seem faster.
- Layout needs getting used to, but no big deal.
- Improved stability (I'm on a sh**y Intel i810 board with integrated Gfx, and it now only crashes 2-3 times/day instead of 15-20!)
- Windoze Update is verry nicely integrated (It downloaded the drivers all by itself when I upgraded! classy!)
Haven't tried any games yet, I'd like to know how AH runs on it before I get a copy at home :)
PS: Kieran, I think with the pro version they only start bugging you 45 days after install.

XP has some nice stuff for a home user. It's a great little OS that builds on the stability and performance of Win2k.
Skuzzy,
I agree, if you are running Win2k SP2, there is really no good reason to upgrade. Win2k is so good right now, I have no reason to mess with it.
Also, your Win98 machines are so stable because you very carefully and skillfully select the hardware that goes into them, and set them up properly. There is nothing wrong with 98 inherently, it just is not as robust as Win2k so it doesn't tolerate misconfiguration, flaky hardware, flaky drivers, and craploads of applications as well as Win2k does. My Win98 machine (I have one at home) runs perfectly fine as well... probably for the same reason yours does. :) I bet Bloom25's would run pretty well too.
My recommendation: If you have Win9x... XP is a great upgrade in 6 months. Don't do it right now. If you are buying a new machine I'd go for it rather than upgrade later. If you have Win2k your likely good for at least a year. Heck, with the installed base and driver support, I'd even say that Win2k is a better gaming OS than XP right now. That will change in 6 months though.
-
Ya, you are probably right Lephturn. Now that I think about it,....at last years CON, I was really surprised how many of the guys systems did not have any of the updates from MS at all.
I have to admint, the Windows update site is pretty nice. MS did a good job there. Only thing that can go wrong is if the catalog of what MS thinks you have and what you really have does not match, then you are hosed. To fix that I remove the catalog every 3 months or so and re-download the whole mess of updates again. Not a task for the timid, I assure you.
Other than keeping the OS up to date, I do manually clean the registry out with each software removal. And you are correct, I am very picky about my hardware and software.

I saw an Upgrade to XP in best buy the other day for a little over $100. I didnt look hard at it so I dont know what OS's it would upgrade from.

From what I've read, XP deals very poorly with removable hard disks. Imagine hot-desking with a removable HDD and having to reactivate each time... Now imagine this at a site not on the Internet where the answers to most questions are, "I'm sorry, I can't tell you."

WinXP Pro does not have the Activation crap.
*cough* WinXP Pro for $25 *cough*
Email me at aferens@hotmail.com, I will give you a link. These guys are trustworthy...have ordered several times from them before. As I said, email me at the adress shown above.
