Title: A talk about le "rules"
Post by: Flipperk on October 07, 2010, 06:01:37 PM
First, a discussion about the rules is not breaking any rule and this post will conform to all of the rules as stated.

Second, lets begin.

YouTube is a family website. Each account has the option to put up a "Safety Mode," while in this mode the comment section is blocked. If you fail to use a feature that is given to you to block out unwanted content, then that is the same as saying you do not mind what you see/read regardless of what it is. Most importantly because this site allows instant feedback without screening it is absurd, imho, to try and moderate another website because of this feature. Anyone of us can describe the video, by providing the exact name and position on the website... this by itself is the same as posting a link but yet these methods of sharing information is allowed.

6- Posting pornographic or generally offensive text, images, links, etc. will not be tolerated. This includes attempts to bypass the profanity filter.

The link to a youtube video is not offensive.

There are no rules stating that if you want to share information using other sites as the source, then that website and all content posted must also conform to the BBS rules.

If there were such a rule, then websites including Wikipedia, which btw posts nude photos and other graphic images, would also have to be banned from linking here at the BBS.

I would make a suggestion to  make it mandatory that the poster of the topic warn before hand that comments or videos contain language. That way we can have an exchange of ideas without breaking anyone elses feelings.

Again I am not acting like a backseat monitor, I am just stating my opinion in a normal manner about an unofficial rule that is being applied.

It's typically not the video that gets the ban stick on this board, it's the comments that are posted on the page that comes up with the video. Most contain very vulgar language that violates the rules of this board so as a result the video gets squashed. This "safety mode" feature of Youtube is a rare thing. I don't have a Youtube account and I see the comment area all the time and it's usually quite vulgar.

Posting a direct link to content that violates rule #6, especialy without any warning that content in a link is controversial or offensive to some (IE: NSFW), is the same as posting the content directly.  Thus, unless the content in your posted links on HTC's BBS conforms to the HTC BBS content posting rules, it is in violation there of.

if I find a video on youtube I want to share I use youtube downloader and upload it to my photobucket account.  $24 a year not to have to worry about the ban stick is worth it

Photobucket premium has no limits to bandwidth or storage space.  I use it to back up a lot of photos that I don't want to lose ever, plus my silly gifs, images, and so on.  So I just ponied up the $$ to go premium when my storage got close to the limit.

I was going to get a hostgator account for that but photobucket is much less expensive and I don't have to hassle with any programming nonsense

The forum rules isn't an AH constitution, BBS justice doesn't have to always conform to the rules.  But, our supreme court (Skuzzy) ruled that YouTube links with inappropriate comments violated rule 6.  It really doesn't matter if the forum rules say it, Skuzzy say it!

Btw, I haven't seen one locked in a while, did Skuzzy's recent return lock some?

I have a photobucket account also but I guess I never maxed out my bandwith on it.

You aren't allowed to post profanity here so why would you be free to link to a page that contains profanity?

Just because you didn't type the obscenities doesn't make them any less obscene.

Ya Sir Skuzzy is Judge, Jury, and sometimes executioner... I saw a couple of locks over the last couple of days.. he's there.  WATCHING YOU!!!!

I have a photobucket account also but I guess I never maxed out my bandwith on it.

Bandwidth was never a problem I was using up all of my available space.  Now that I've got it I might as well use it right?

The only time I see youtube link posts being locked on here is when someone posts a link without any description of what it is a video of.

and thats the reason we donīt have a "Hilarious VideoThread"?

Is it possible to embed youtube videos into posts here?

It was ruled many years ago that a alink on a WEB site is as good as posting the content on that site.  This point is a matter of law.

However, common sense also dictates;  Ok, go to another forum and break every rule of our forum and then come here and post the link to it.

Don't worry, as I am not going to edit out any Youtube links anymore, regardless of what the content is.  So knock yourselves out.  I really do not care.
