On October 14, 1943, 291 B-17 Flying Fortresses escorted by several squadrons of P-47's took off into a murky British sky to go hit ball-bearing factories in Schweinfurt, Germany. Only 33 B-17's returned to base undamaged, and 77 B-17's did not return at all. It was the highest loss to the USAAF on any mission yet and caused a pause in America's strategic raids deep into Germany. It went down in history as "Black Thursday."
It will run Oct 14 at 3 pm Eastern and at 10 pm Eastern in Special Events II arena.
More details are here:

September-October was also called "Bloody Summer of 43' " It was the first time they faced the 190.

Trying to push this as a FSO event. Call it as it was give by its name, "Bloody Summer of 43'". Allies will be all bombers (B-17, B-24) and axis in 109G2/6, 190A5, 110
-
Won't be proper unless the B17s and P47s as escort
-
Won't be proper unless the B17s and P47s as escort
Can not have P-47 as escort as historically they where limited on range.
-
I'll escort the B17's!
999000 <S>
-
P-47's were the only escorts on Black Thursday even though they weren't able to escort the whole distance.
-
In this event, it is B-17 and P-47D-11 vs. Bf 109G-2, Bf 109G-6, and FW 190A-5. With the airlaunches, the P-47's will have the ability to escort the whole distance. That is not fully historical, but "This Day in WWII" events are themed events, not historical recreations, geared toward ease of participation and balance.
-
Sorry I'll be away for this one~Dang, I love flying the D-11. Default skins for this?
-
Why do you make it so hard to pick a side in these events! :neener:
-
Looks like I will be in and I've recruited some VF-15 Satan's Playmates to fly allies~ :aok :aok :aok What is the situation with the skins, will it be default? Anyone know?
-
The skins available are the same as in the Main Arena. Skin selection is up to you.
-
Great, should make for some good film!

"The opening play is a line plunge through center," said mission commander Peaslee. "The fighters whip through our formation, for our closing speed exceeds 500 mph. Another group of flashes replaces the first, and this is repeated five times, as six formations of Me-109s charges us .... I can see fighters on my side ... their paths marked in the bright sunlight by fine lines of light-colored smoke as they fire short bursts. It is a coordinated attack ... their timing is perfect, their technique masterly."

Looking forward to raining steel and thunder down on the axis power at 10pm est :aok

hehe.... air starts are funny to watch for people that have never done them :rofl throttles back (idle) flaps up upon launch and gently pull back S_L_O_W_L_Y as not to stall out or lose your drones, nail the throttle go level to get your speed back up, after that you should be ok, if you have never air launched it can be a killer

It was really fun, I hope to be there later but AH is getting a little crazy on me.
-
I believe the SW's will be escorting in D-11's.
:pray :x
Still voting though.

Anyone else having trouble getting the map to DL? :headscratch:

Great event Brooke. I had a blast (pun intended)!
The altitude of the bombers was a challenge I
hadn't counted on but once I was able to
finally reach them a good time was had.
Thanks for putting this together!
:salute
-
I was there for the 3pm eastern, though I showed up late to that dance. I was able to be in the 2nd part and had a blast. :rock I made sure I was going to be to the entire thing for the 10pm eastern. My highlight was running out of fuel the 2nd go around and gliding all the way back to base and landing it. I took 25% the 2nd time...big mistake. But they were out running me on the 1st go because I was at 50%. :lol Definitely had fun! :x
Now, if only we could get an FSO geared towards this time period.... :x
Good show Brooke. :salute

Logs are up for the 10 pm running, here in the TDI section:

wish i took pics of the battle Basher and I had from 25k with 4 190s all the way to the deck...havent had an epic battle like that in a long time. 4 190A5s vs 2 P47D11s... came out on top with only me having an oil leak and basher unscathed... 2 kills 2 assists for me and he got the 2 kills i assisted on. i need to learn to vid my flights... :aok brooke, thanks for the setup <S>

Long flight (longer than expected) with the 17s in the first 10PM leg last night. Nice tight formation of buffs, constant stream of interceptors cutting through the formation, long run for home with slashing interceptors, and that nice tight formation kept shooting them down. I made it all the way to A45 only to run out of fuel a few miles out, then misjudged how well those B-17s glided, came in way too fast, bounced off the runway, slid along the hill at the end, ripped a wing off on a tree, cartwheeled, and died. Was a great long ride only to blow it at the end.
And apparently hit nothing with my bombs. Not sure if I missed or just dropped after others and hit already-destroyed buildings.

Anyone else having trouble getting the map to DL? :headscratch:
Yep i did! I was late getting into the arena because it seemed like forever to D/L the terrain! I got a nice big fat white screen for like 10 sec! Got in flight for like 10 or 12 min then got booted :cry log shows i bailed  ! Next time ill show up early haha!
Thanks Brooke for sponsoring the event! :salute

This was the first organized event I took part in and holy cow :O did I have fun. :salute to everyone in the b17's during the 10pm run and thanks to oneway for being so easy to understand and follow that even a mook like me could make it. (no ankle humping intended here, just a thanks) I will definately be doing this again.

Very Fun.
Fun listening and watching the airstart rookies attempt to control their aircraft.
Fun staying with the bomber group on approach to targets.
Fun as the bandits intercepted the group.
Fun as I got a kill and save a buff.
Fun as 2 190's and a 109 attacked me and I dragged them low and away from group then escaped.
Fun as I climbed back to alt to escort the buffs home.
Fun as I found SWkiljoy all alone egressing and escorted him all the way home and he landed all 3 of his buffs.
Thanks for the fun!
-
Yup, fun was had here. Had a great 1v1 with PB. Would have had him if I didnt auger  We bothed laughed and he even said I deserved the kill from that fight. I said no worries, it was fun. I'll see if I can grab some screenies. Thanks for the event Brooke! :salute

I'm not sure we need a whole forum. I'll make a topic in the special-events forum, though.

Remember, 60 B17s lost. 550 bomber crewman listed as KIA/MIA/POW

Hi Tmetal. I was one of the guys who shot you down. Had I
known it was your first outing I woulda given you a pass...hmmm,
but then again prolly not ;)
We picked you 'cause you were separated from the main body and low
enough to dive into. Besides, we couldn't get above anyone else
before our fuel ran out so a couple of us just joined in on you;
just like what happened in real life to bombers who got separated
from the Group.
You might find this document interesting as well:
http://david.tenifer.com/aceshigh/pdf/MoM/MoM-B-17ControlGuideWide.pdf
Being separated must have horrified the aircrew of the doomed
bomber..and their friends who watched them drift away, powerless
to help. I can't imagine.
Here's a video of my attack. I thought you might find seeing the
engagement from the German point of view interesting. Sorry for
the view shifting around. I really must install the TrackIR that's
been sitting in my closet for a year some day. :huh

I hope the event helped you and everyone else who participated
remember these brave airmen and what they did. A greater generation
there will never be.

Was a fun first b17 strike mission to intercept, albiet more from the standpoint as a major challenge.
Instead of historically meeting buffs at their black thursday operating altitudes between 25 and 30k, instead found bombers at 32,000 or 33,000 with very high p47s covering them. Our LW first wave attackers were too low and bounced repeatedly by the escorting p47s. Not enough E or alt to bounce anyone from above, kept most lw fighters away from the stream. Felt more like alternate reality black thursday for both sides.
Being said that, pushed on with this challenge and landed the 190A5 and traded it in for a 109G6. Barely able to climb back up to the buff altitude, waiting for them to egress. Found them egressing albiet a tad lower altitude (28K?). Did not have enough E to climb higher for an above pass on buffs due to their speed. Decided was best to attack co-alt from 11 and 1 positions. Made about three passes, as was close to impossible to attack at all to set up any other type of attack without their b17 guns shredding me apart. Saw some of my guns meet the bombers, but no damage. ON the third pass, decided to get more close and personal but oil and radiator hit by a b17 gunner. Drifted as far as could, strafed a field while attempting to land but the nearby ack exploded my fuel tank.
Decided to log off after that, since the bombers wanted to play that way up with higher escorts, gave extremely difficult time for the LW to make things far from equal in-flight. Which is why I say 'alternate reality' Thursday.
Amazed at all the LW won (with 1 point).
Good intention in this set up, will try another next time.

A <S> to InCrypt, who stayed with the bombers LONG after he ran his guns dry, having fun drawing interceptors off just by being there and then climbing back up once they'd been chased away.

A little horn tooting from allied heavy group...
I think the B17's in run #2 sortie #1 did one heck of a job...everybody stayed together in a very tight and lethal box throughout the entire run to the deeper and riskier strat set...
I failed to look at the rules before being thrust into command of this unit..I ended up as group leader after we spawned out...and was completely unaware that pilots had unlimited lives...which explains the constant flow of interceptors out of the air spawns...
I kept thinking we would eventually attrit the enemy forces...
Unfortunately our escort unit did not know they had unlimited lives...and the 17's on the first sortie eventually were naked heading home...
Huge mistake on my part...nonetheless the 17's had a heck of a run and a few did make it home successfully...
Had we known that enemy fighters were unlimited we would have never made the run to the riskier strat...and we would have avoided those airspawns like the plague...
We had gas though...great group of guys...

Tmetal had to log so he decide to take one for the team and try to pull some fighters low and away from the main group. A better man than me.

Ahh, that explains it.
He was right, the low hanging fruit was hard to pass up. :D

96Delta- no worries about it being my first time I had a blast and thanks for the video. The reason behind my drop out of formation to draw away the fighters was that I had 2 fuel leaks and had just run out of fuel. So I did what was good for the group and banked right and away to help the 17's still in the fight. After my explosive exit I re-upped as a gunner in the formation for KilerMon and got 4 more assists on the way back to base. It was an epic night for me and I don't think it could have gotten better even if I could have landed my mission. Ready to do it again :salute

WTG V!! lol, i didnt stay for the second go around, had school the next morning or else id have been right there with ya :aok

2nd go was more realistic in that we had NO escorts with us. 1st go, I took 50% fuel, but towards the end the others were out running me. So I took 25% fuel on the 2nd and low and behold, I ended up getting fueled.... :furious :rofl I ran out of fuel about 2 sectors away from base and ended up having to glide the rest of the way in. Almost rolled off the end of the runway. :lol
